Abstract

A silicone oil having a mean molecular weight average greater than about 20,000 Daltons, with no more than about 3% to about 4% of the total silicone oil by weight being comprised of components having a molecular weight less than about 15,000 Daltons. In some embodiments, the silicone oil is used in intraocular lens devices.

Claims (28)

1 .- 22 . (canceled)

23 . An intraocular lens device, comprising:

an anterior region;

a posterior region;

a cavity region defined between the anterior and posterior regions; and

a fluid comprising a silicone oil disposed in the cavity region wherein the silicone oil comprises molecules having a molecular weight greater than about 2,000 Daltons, and wherein the silicone oil comprises a copolymer comprising diphenylsiloxane and dimethylsiloxane units.

24 . The intraocular lens device of claim 23 , wherein the silicone oil comprises molecules having a molecular weight greater than about 3,000 Daltons.

25 . The intraocular lens device of claim 23 , wherein the silicone oil comprises molecules having a molecular weight greater than about 5,000 Daltons.

26 . The intraocular lens device of claim 23 , wherein the silicone oil has a refractive index of about 1.40 to about 1.60.

27 . The intraocular lens device of claim 23 , wherein the silicone oil has a refractive index of about 1.49.

28 . The intraocular lens device of claim 23 , wherein the silicone oil has a mean molecular weight in the range of about 20,000 Daltons to about 30,000 Daltons,

29 . The intraocular lens device of claim 23 , wherein the silicone oil comprises about 20 mole % to about 25 mole % of diphenylsiloxane and about 80 mole % to about 75 mole % of dimethylsiloxane.

30 . The intraocular lens device of claim 23 , wherein the copolymer further comprises substituted or unsubstituted dialkylsiloxane units.

31 . The intraocular lens device of claim 23 , wherein the anterior portion comprises a refractive optical element, and wherein at least a portion of the posterior portion comprises an elastic material configured to actuate in response to a force applied thereto, causing the fluid to exert a deforming or displacing force on the refractive optical element.

32 . The intraocular lens device of claim 23 , wherein at least one of the anterior region and the posterior region comprises a bulk polymeric material comprising a fluorosilicone polymer.

33 . An intraocular lens (IOL) device configured for implantation in a lens capsule of a patient's eye, the IOL device comprising:

a silicone oil comprising molecules having a molecular weight greater than about 2,000 Daltons, wherein the silicone oil comprises a copolymer comprising diphenylsiloxane and dimethylsiloxane units; and

a bulk polymeric material, wherein at least a portion of the bulk material is in physical contact with the silicone oil.

34 . The IOL device of claim 33 , wherein the silicone oil is entirely encapsulated by the bulk polymeric material.

35 . The IOL device of claim 33 , wherein the bulk polymeric material is a fluorosilicone polymer represented by formula (I):

where n and m are each independently 0 to about 500; t is about 100 to about 1000; each R 1 is independently alkyl or aryl; R 2 is haloalkyl; R 3 is alkyl or haloalkyl; R 4 and R 5 are independently alkyl, haloalkyl or aryl; and each X is a crosslinker that links the polymer of formula (I) with a second polymer of formula (I).

36 . The IOL device of claim 33 , wherein the silicone oil is purified using supercritical fluid extraction.

37 . The IOL device of claim 33 , wherein the silicone oil comprises molecules having a molecular weight greater than about 3,000 Daltons.

38 . The IOL device of claim 33 , wherein the silicone oil comprises molecules having a molecular weight greater than about 5,000 Daltons.

39 . The IOL device of claim 33 , wherein the silicone oil has a refractive index of about 1.40 to about 1.60.

40 . The IOL device of claim 33 , wherein the silicone oil has a refractive index of about 1.49.

41 . The IOL device of claim 33 , wherein the silicone oil has a mean molecular weight in the range of about 20,000 Daltons to about 30,000 Daltons.

42 . The IOL device of claim 33 , wherein the copolymer further comprises substituted or unsubstituted dialkylsiloxane units.
