Abstract

Systems, methods and apparatuses to concentrate lithium containing solutions using forward osmosis units are provided, which, for example, can include providing at least one forward osmosis unit having at least one lithium containing solution chamber having at least one first inlet and at least one first outlet, at least one brine chamber having at least one second inlet and at least one second outlet, and at least one selectively permeable membrane positioned between the at least one lithium containing solution chamber and the at least one brine chamber, and conveying a lithium containing solution through the at least one lithium containing solution chamber and a concentrated brine solution through the at least one brine chamber, said conveying causing water from the lithium containing solution to be drawn through the at least one selectively permeable membrane and into the concentrated brine solution, such that a concentrated lithium containing solution exits through the first outlet and a less concentrated brine solution exits through the second outlet.

Claims (21)

1. A method of extracting lithium from a lithium containing solution, comprising:

providing a lithium containing solution comprising silica, divalent ions, and borate ions;

processing the lithium containing solution in a silica management process to produce a silica-lean lithium containing solution;

processing the silica-lean lithium containing solution in a lithium capture step, the lithium capture step captures lithium from the silica-lean lithium containing solution by contacting the silica-lean lithium containing solution with a sorbent to produce a saturated lithium sorbent material;

recovering lithium from the lithium capture step to produce the lithium rich stream, wherein recovering lithium from the lithium capture step comprises:

stripping the saturated lithium sorbent material to produce an eluate;

recycling at least a portion of the eluate to the sorbent to produce the lithium rich stream, wherein the portion of eluate comprises the highest concentration of lithium;

purifying the lithium rich stream to remove divalent ions and borate ions;

concentrating the lithium rich stream by supplying the lithium rich stream to a forward osmosis step to produce a concentrated lithium rich stream; and

further concentrating the concentrated lithium rich stream to produce a twice concentrated lithium rich stream.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising pretreating the silica-lean lithium containing solution in an ion exchange to extract lithium from the silica-lean lithium containing solution.

3. A method of claim 1 , wherein the sorbent comprises an alumina sorbent.

4. A method of claim 1 , further comprising purifying the lithium rich stream by ion exchange to remove calcium, magnesium, and divalent ions.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the forward osmosis step comprises processing the lithium rich stream in at least one forward osmosis unit comprising:

at least one lithium containing solution chamber having at least one first inlet and at least one first outlet;

at least one brine chamber having at least one second inlet and at least one second outlet; and

at least one selectively permeable membrane positioned between the at least one lithium containing solution chamber and the at least one brine chamber.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising conveying a lithium rich stream through the at least one lithium containing solution chamber and a concentrated brine solution through the at least one brine chamber, said conveying causing water from the lithium rich stream to be drawn through the at least one selectively permeable membrane and into the concentrated brine solution, such that a concentrated lithium rich stream exits through the first outlet and a less concentrated brine solution exits through the second outlet.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising purifying the twice concentrated lithium rich stream by removing sodium and potassium ions to produce a concentrated lithium rich solution having reduced sodium and potassium ion concentrations.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sorbent is stripped with a low ionic strength liquid.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the low ionic strength liquid comprises alcohols, water, or mixtures thereof.
