Abstract

A rapid-entry and rebounding fit shoe having one or both of a rapid-entry heel element and a rapid-entry tongue element and both snap back for fit. The rapid-entry shoe directs a user's foot into or otherwise accommodates a user's foot with respect to, a shoe opening, and thereafter secures a rear portion of rapid-entry shoe about a user's heel as well as forefoot.

Claims (30)

1. A rapid-entry shoe, comprising:

a heel structure located at a rear portion of the rapid-entry shoe, the heel structure comprising a deformable element; and

a snap back tongue element comprising a surface having a surface first side and a surface second side, a center channel positioned along a longitudinal axis between the surface first side and the surface second side, and a plurality of surface-only cuts or indentations extending into but not through the surface, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and between the surface first side and the surface second side such that the plurality of surface-only cuts or indentations intersect the center channel;

wherein, in an open position, the surface first side and the surface second side of the snap back tongue element are substantially planar relative to each other about the longitudinal axis, an end of the snap back tongue element is configured to be rolled upward away from a sole of the rapid-entry shoe and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis about the plurality of surface-only cuts or indentations to further open and widen an opening of the rapid-entry shoe;

wherein, in a closed position, the surface first side and the surface second side of the snap back tongue element form a downward curve about the longitudinal axis toward the sole of the rapid-entry shoe;

wherein, in the open position, the surface first side and the surface second side of the snap back tongue element are biased against forming the downward curve, and wherein, in the closed position, the end of the snap back tongue element is biased against being rolled upward;

wherein the heel structure comprises a collapsed configuration and an uncollapsed configuration; and

wherein the heel structure is biased by the deformable element toward the uncollapsed configuration.

The rapid-entry shoe of claim 1 , wherein the snap back tongue element comprises a top portion closer to the rear portion of the rapid-entry shoe than a lower portion, and wherein the plurality of surface-only cuts or indentations, each of the plurality of surface-only cuts or indentations intersecting the center channel, are non-uniformly spaced closer together toward the top portion than the lower portion.

3. The rapid-entry shoe of claim 1 , further comprising a cross element extending between and unitary with a medial quarter and a lateral quarter of an upper of the rapid-entry shoe, wherein the tongue element is configured to buckle about the cross element.

4. The rapid-entry shoe of claim 3 , wherein the cross element is coupled to the tongue.

5. The rapid-entry shoe of claim 3 , wherein the cross element extends at least partially over the tongue.

6. The rapid-entry shoe of claim 3 , wherein the cross element is adjustable up and/or down to vary the amount of flex allowed to the snap back tongue element and to adjust the tightness of the fit of the rapid-entry shoe.

The rapid-entry shoe of claim 1 , wherein the snap back tongue element comprises a top portion closer to the rear portion of the rapid-entry shoe than a lower portion, and wherein the snap back tongue element further comprises a tongue flare at the top portion, the tongue flare having a funnel-like shape to direct the foot into the rapid-entry shoe.

8. A rapid-entry shoe comprising:

an upper coupled to a base, the upper comprising a medial quarter, a lateral quarter, a rear portion, and a heel structure movable between a collapsed configuration positioned closer to the base and a uncollapsed configuration positioned farther from the base;

a deformable element positioned in at least the rear portion and operable to bias the heel structure from the collapsed configuration to the uncollapsed configuration;

a tongue element comprising a tongue stiffener and an outward-facing surface, wherein the tongue stiffener comprises a plurality of surface-only cuts or indentations that extend into but not completely through the outward-facing surface of the tongue element; and

a cross element extending between and unitary with the medial quarter and the lateral quarter;

wherein, during entry of a foot into an opening of the rapid-entry shoe defined by the upper, a top portion of the tongue element is configured to roll forward about the cross element from a closed position to an open position, while a lower portion of the tongue element remains unbent;

wherein, after entry of the foot into the opening, the plurality of surface-only cuts or indentations into the tongue stiffener are configured to rebound the top portion from the open position to the closed position;

wherein, in the open position, the snap back tongue element is biased against the closed position; and

wherein, in the closed position, the snap back tongue element is biased against the open position.

9. The rapid-entry shoe of claim 8 , wherein the tongue element is configured to buckle about the cross element.

10. The rapid-entry shoe of claim 9 , wherein the cross element extends at least partially over the tongue.

11. The rapid-entry shoe of claim 8 , wherein the cross element is adjustable up and/or down to vary the length the tongue element is allowed to flex over the cross element.

The rapid-entry shoe of claim 10 , wherein the tongue element comprises a top portion closer to the rear portion of the rapid-entry shoe than a lower portion, and wherein the tongue element further comprises a tongue flare at the top portion, the tongue flare having a funnel-like shape to direct the user's foot into the rapid-entry shoe.

13. The rapid-entry shoe of claim 1 , wherein the snap back tongue element is stable in the open position and is stable in the closed position.

14. The rapid-entry shoe of claim 1 , wherein the snap back tongue element further comprises a flap extending from an edge of the snap back tongue element.

15. The rapid-entry shoe of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of surface-only cuts or indentations are expanded when the snap back tongue element is in the open position and substantially closed when the snap back tongue element is in the closed position.
