Abstract

A universal athleticism rating system and related athletic performance measuring systems for accurately detecting and recording athletic performance are disclosed. The athleticism rating system evaluates individual athletes against a common, standardized, set of athletic performance tests. Each athlete performs the athletic tests and his or her scores in the individual tests are entered into a standardized calculation to produce a single athletic performance score. The related performance measuring system is preferably a timing system that ensures quick, easy, and accurate collection of athletic event timing related data without the need for the athlete to wear any special detection devices or the like. In a preferred embodiment, the performance measuring system integrates with the rating system to provide seamless athletic data collection and rating of athletes.

Claims (52)

1. A method of processing athletic sensor data, comprising:

receiving, by a base unit, from a sensor unit, and during a first time frame, performance data of a first athlete collected during the first athlete's performance of an athletic activity during the first time frame;

generating, by the base unit, an activity-specific score for the first athlete, the activity-specific score generated based on an activity-specific rating equation and the performance data;

receiving, by the base unit, from the sensor unit, and during a second time frame, second performance data for the first athlete during performance of the athletic activity;

generating, by the base unit, a second activity-specific score for the first athlete, the second activity-specific score generated based on the activity-specific rating equation and the second performance data;

processing, by the base unit, the activity-specific score and the second activity-specific score to determine a third time when the first athlete should be replaced by a second athlete in the athletic activity; and

displaying, by the base unit, the third time during the athletic activity indicating when the second athlete should replace the first athlete.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first time frame and the second time frame overlap.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first time frame and the second time frame are identical.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the athletic activity comprises a team sport activity involving at least the first athlete and the second athlete.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the athletic activity comprises an activity-specific training drill having required movements related to the athletic activity.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensor unit is worn on an appendage of the first athlete.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the athletic activity is selected from the group consisting of football, soccer, running, jogging, yoga, and walking.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the sensor unit comprises a timing sensor; and

receiving performance data comprises automatically detecting a plurality of triggering events from the timing sensor during the first athlete's performance of a first test related to the athletic activity.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the activity-specific score comprises:

determining that the first athlete's performance constitute actions of an activity-specific action; and

determining that the first athlete is engaged in the athletic activity based on the activity-specific action.

10. A base unit, comprising:

one or more processors;

a wireless communications device;

a display device; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the base unit to:

receive, using the wireless communications device, from a sensor unit, and during a first time frame, performance data of a first athlete collected during the first athlete's performance of an athletic activity during the first time frame;

generate an activity-specific score for the first athlete, the activity-specific score generated based on an activity-specific rating equation and the performance data;

receive, using the wireless communications device, from the sensor unit, and during a second time frame, second performance data for the first athlete during performance of the athletic activity;

generate a second activity-specific score for the first athlete, the second activity-specific score generated based on the activity-specific rating equation and the second performance data;

process the activity-specific score and the second activity-specific score to determine a third time when the first athlete should replaced by a second athlete in the athletic activity; and

display, using the display device, the third time during the athletic activity indicating when the second athlete should replace the first athlete.

11. The base unit of claim 10 , wherein the first time frame and the second time frame overlap.

12. The base unit of claim 10 , wherein the first time frame and the second time frame are identical.

13. The base unit of claim 10 , wherein the athletic activity comprises a team sport activity involving at least the first athlete and the second athlete.

14. The base unit of claim 10 , wherein the athletic activity comprises an activity-specific training drill having required movements related to the athletic activity.

15. The base unit of claim 10 , wherein the sensor unit is worn on an appendage of the first athlete.

16. The base unit of claim 10 , wherein the athletic activity is selected from the group consisting of football, soccer, running, jogging, yoga, and walking.

17. The base unit of claim 10 , wherein:

the sensor unit comprises a timing sensor; and

the instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the base unit to receive performance data by automatically detecting a plurality of triggering events from the timing sensor during the first athlete's performance of a first test related to the athletic activity.

18. The base unit of claim 10 , wherein the instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the base unit to generate the activity-specific score by:

determining that the first athlete's performance constitute actions of an activity-specific action; and

determining that the first athlete is engaged in the athletic activity based on the activity-specific action.

19. A non-transitory machine-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform steps comprising:

receiving, from a sensor unit during a first time frame, performance data of a first athlete collected during the first athlete's performance of an athletic activity during the first time frame;

generating an activity-specific score for the first athlete, the activity-specific score generated based on an activity-specific rating equation and the performance data;

receiving, from the sensor unit during a second time frame, second performance data for the first athlete during performance of the athletic activity;

generating a second activity-specific score for the first athlete, the second activity-specific score generated based on the activity-specific rating equation and the second performance data;

processing the activity-specific score and the second activity-specific score to determine a third time when the first athlete should be replaced by a second athlete in the athletic activity; and

displaying the third time during the athletic activity indicating when the second athlete should replace the first athlete.

20. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the instructions, when executed by one or more processors, further cause the one or more processors to perform steps comprising generating the activity-specific score by:

determining that the first athlete's performance constitute actions of an activity-specific action; and

determining that the first athlete is engaged in the athletic activity based on the activity-specific action.
