Abstract

A distributed capacity base station system and method are disclosed. The system may provide a cost effective, high capacity broadband wireless access solution that can co-exist with GPS without interference to the GPS system.

Claims (21)

1. A base station, comprising:

at least one concentrating access node (ACN) comprising a backhaul concentrating node (CN) and a first radio access node (RAN), wherein the CN is integrated with the first RAN, and wherein the first RAN is limited by a power threshold, wherein the power threshold is based at least in part on a global positioning system (GPS) transmission susceptibility threshold; and

one or more access end nodes (AENs) configured to communicate with the ACN, each of the one or more AENs comprising a backhaul end node (EN) and a second radio access node (RAN), wherein the EN is integrated with the second RAN, and wherein the second RAN is limited by the power threshold; wherein the power threshold of the first RAN, the second RAN, or combinations thereof, provides for in-band GPS co-existence with the base station.

2. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the power threshold is an in-beam equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) threshold.

3. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the power threshold is 42 decibel-milliwatts (dBmi).

4. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the power threshold is less than the GPS transmission susceptibility threshold at 10 meters (m) relative to the base station.

5. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the power threshold of the first RAN, the second RAN, or combinations thereof, provides for in-band GPS co-existence with the base station in an adjacent spectrum.

6. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the EN and the CN form points of backhaul connectivity for the base station.

7. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the CN and the EN are communicatively coupled based on at least one beamformed link operating on an independent radio frequency (RF) channel.

8. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the AEN supports a first level of traffic scheduling, wherein the first level of traffic scheduling includes access scheduling with quality of service (QOS) on a user per traffic flow basis.

9. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the AEN supports a second level of traffic scheduling, wherein the second level of traffic scheduling includes allocating backhaul resources to meet capacity bursts in aggregated traffic to and from the AEN.

10. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the base station is compatible with frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time division duplexing (TDD) 3G and 4G wireless standards.

11. A method comprising:

communicating, by at least one concentrating access node (ACN) comprising a backhaul concentrating node (CN) integrated with a first radio access node (RAN) of a distributed base station system, to one or more access end nodes (AENs), each of the one or more AENs comprising a backhaul end node (EN) integrated with a second radio access node (RAN) of the distributed base station system, wherein the communicating operates under a power threshold, wherein the power threshold is based at least in part on a global positioning system (GPS) transmission susceptibility threshold and wherein the power threshold of the first RAN, the second RAN, or combinations thereof, provides for in-band GPS co-existence with a base station of the distributed base station system.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the power threshold is an in-beam equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) threshold.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the power threshold is 42 decibel-milliwatts (dBmi).

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the power threshold is less than the GPS transmission susceptibility threshold at 10 meters (m) relative to the base station.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the power threshold of the first RAN, the second RAN, or combinations thereof, provides for in-band GPS co-existence with the base station in an adjacent spectrum.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the EN and the CN form points of backhaul connectivity for the distributed capacity base station.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the CN and the EN are communicatively coupled based on at least one beamformed link operating on an independent radio frequency (RF) channel.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the distributed base station system is compatible with frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time division duplexing (TDD) 3G and 4G wireless standards.
