Abstract

Techniques for more accurately and efficiently replicating the alignment of one or more printer components with respect to another printer component are described herein. Replication may be achieved by using a fixture and a connection media to create a near exact replica of features of the fixture, or to temporarily hold multiple printer components in position while a joining layer of the connection media hardens. More specifically, a connection media, such as epoxy, can be used to fill an intentionally-established gap between connecting bodies or components that are held in a predetermined position by the replication fixture. The replication fixture represents a mechanical mounting interface that influences the position of a print head (or an array of print heads) within a printer housing or printing mechanism. Joining printer components in such a manner enables a stable mechanical coupling to be formed that does not require post operations.

Claims (31)

1. A replication fixture for fabricating printer assemblies, the replication fixture comprising:

a base having an upper surface, and

multiple structural features that are accessible along the upper surface,

wherein the multiple structural features are positioned so as to align a predetermined set of components in a predetermined arrangement, the predetermined set of components including a printer structure and a mechanical interface component,

wherein the predetermined arrangement establishes a gap between the printer structure and the mechanical interface component, and

wherein the multiple structural features are designed to mate with a first structural feature of the printer structure and a second structural feature of the mechanical interface component.

2. The replication fixture of claim 1 , wherein the upper surface is a substantially planar upper surface.

3. The replication fixture of claim 1 , wherein the base is comprised of granite, carbon fiber, ceramic, metal, or some combination thereof.

4. The replication fixture of claim 1 , wherein the multiple structural features include cavities, protrusions, or some combination thereof.

5. The replication fixture of claim 1 , wherein the multiple structural features include a series of holes, wherein the first structural feature of the printer structure is a pin configured to be received in one of the series of holes, and wherein the second structural feature of the mechanical interface component is another pin configured to be received in another one of the series of holes.

6. The replication fixture of claim 1 , wherein the multiple structural features include an indentation, notch, flange, kinematic nest, slot, shoulder, or some combination thereof.

7. A replication fixture for production of printer assemblies prepared by a process comprising the steps of:

providing a block of stable material;

forming the block of stable material into a base having a substantially planar upper surface; and

forming multiple structural features along the substantially planar upper surface,

wherein the multiple structural features are positioned so as to align a printer structure and a mechanical interface component in a predetermined arrangement,

wherein the predetermined arrangement establishes a gap between the printer structure and the mechanical interface component, and

wherein the multiple structural features are designed to mate with a first structural feature of the printer structure and a second structural feature of the mechanical interface component.

8. The replication fixture of claim 7 , wherein the block of stable material is comprised of granite, carbon fiber, ceramic, metal, or some combination thereof.

9. The replication fixture of claim 7 , wherein the multiple structural features include cavities, protrusions, flats, or some combination thereof.

10. A replication fixture for facilitating alignment of components during manufacture of a printer assembly, the replication fixture comprising:

a base having a surface with a series of cavities formed therein,

wherein the series of cavities are designed to accommodate structural features of a pair of components to be adhered together,

wherein the series of cavities are located along the surface such that, when installed on the base, the pair of components are positioned in a predetermined arrangement, and

wherein the predetermined arrangement causes a gap to be established between the pair of components.

11. The replication fixture of claim 10 , wherein the base comprises a stable material so as to allow curing of a connection media between the pair of components through exposure to heat to occur while the pair of components are installed on the base.

12. The replication fixture of claim 11 , wherein the stable material is granite, carbon fiber, ceramic, metal, or some combination thereof.

13. The replication fixture of claim 10 , wherein the base comprises a stable material so as to allow curing of a connection media between the pair of components through exposure to ultraviolet light to occur while the pair of components are installed on the base.

14. The replication fixture of claim 10 , wherein the base comprises a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) material.

15. The replication fixture of claim 10 , wherein the surface is substantially planar.

16. The replication fixture of claim 10 , wherein the surface is designed to become substantially flush with outer surfaces of the pair of components when installed on the base.
