Abstract

Various surgical instruments, implants, and their methods of use are disclosed. The surgical instruments are usable to insert various implants into a patient through an access portal in a minimally-invasive manner. The implants are rotatable between different orientations using the instruments to change the footprint of the implant and allow the implant to be inserted through the minimally-invasive access portal.

Claims (39)

1. A surgical inserter comprising:

a sleeve defining a longitudinal axis; and

a pivoting member moveably engaged with the sleeve adjacent an end of the surgical inserter;

a spring mechanism biasing the sleeve towards the pivoting member, wherein,

in a first orientation, the pivoting member has a first angle with respect to the longitudinal axis,

in a second orientation, the pivoting member has a second angle with respect to the longitudinal axis, the second angle being less than the first angle,

wherein the pivoting member is engaged with a spring that biases the pivoting member towards the first orientation.

2. The surgical inserter of claim 1 , wherein, in the first orientation, a first end of the pivoting member is not in contact with the sleeve and, in the second orientation, the first end of the pivoting member is in contact with the sleeve.

3. The surgical inserter of claim 1 , further comprising a connection mechanism received within the sleeve and having a plurality of arms configured to engage an implant.

The surgical inserter of claim 3 , wherein, in a first position, each arm of the plurality of arms are spaced a first distance from each other, and, in a second position, each arm of the plurality of arms are spaced a second distance from each other, the second distance being less than the first distance.

5. The surgical inserter of claim 4 , further comprising a locking mechanism, wherein movement of the locking mechanism from a first position to a second position moves each arm of the plurality of arms from the first distance to the second distance.

The inserter of claim 5 , wherein a portion of the connection mechanism is received within the locking mechanism and, in the first position, the locking mechanism covers a first portion of the connection mechanism and, in the second position, the locking mechanism covers a second, greater portion of the connection mechanism.

7. The surgical inserter of claim 5 , further comprising an actuation member, wherein movement of the actuation member moves the locking mechanism from the first position to the second position.

8. The surgical inserter of claim 7 , wherein rotation of the actuation member about the longitudinal axis moves the locking mechanism along the longitudinal axis from the first position to the second position.

9. A surgical inserter comprising:

a sleeve defining a longitudinal axis; and

a pivoting member moveably engaged with the sleeve adjacent an end of the surgical inserter, wherein,

in a first orientation, the pivoting member has a first angle with respect to the longitudinal axis and the sleeve is at a first distance from the end of the surgical inserter,

in a second orientation, the pivoting member has a second angle with respect to the longitudinal axis, the second angle being less than the first angle, and the sleeve is at a second distance from the end of the surgical inserter, the second distance being greater than the first distance, wherein the pivoting member is engaged with a spring that biases the pivoting member towards the first orientation.

10. A surgical inserter comprising:

an actuation member movably engaged to a locking mechanism, wherein movement of the actuation member from a first position to a second position causes the locking mechanism to move from an unlocked state to a locked state;

a connection mechanism configured to engage with an implant, wherein, movement of the locking mechanism from its unlocked state to its locked state is configured to lock the connection mechanism to the implant, and movement of the locking mechanism from its locked state to its unlocked state is configured to unlock the connection mechanism from the implant; and

a sleeve engaged to a pivoting member with a spring mechanism biasing the sleeve towards the pivoting member, wherein the pivoting member is engaged to the sleeve via a spring that biases the pivoting member into a first orientation transverse to the sleeve.

11. The surgical inserter of claim 10 , wherein the pivoting member is pivotable to a second orientation substantially in line with the inserter.

12. The surgical inserter of claim 11 , wherein the pivoting member is movable in a longitudinal direction from a first proximal position in the first orientation to a second more proximal position in the second orientation.

13. A surgical inserter comprising:

an actuation member movably engaged to a locking mechanism, wherein movement of the actuation member from a first position to a second position causes the locking mechanism to move from an unlocked state to a locked state;

a connection mechanism configured to engage with an implant, wherein, movement of the locking mechanism from its unlocked state to its locked state is configured to lock the connection mechanism to the implant, and movement of the locking mechanism from its locked state to its unlocked state is configured to unlock the connection mechanism from the implant,

a drive shaft operatively engaged to the actuation member and to the locking mechanism, the actuation member comprising a knob rotatably engaged to the inserter, wherein rotation of the knob relative to the inserter causes longitudinal movement of the drive shaft, thereby resulting in movement of the locking mechanism from its unlocked state to its locked state; and

a sleeve engaged to a pivoting member, wherein the pivoting member is engaged to the sleeve via a spring that biases the pivoting member into a first orientation transverse to the sleeve.

14. A surgical inserter comprising:

an actuation member movably engaged to a locking mechanism, wherein movement of the actuation member from a first position to a second position causes the locking mechanism to move from an unlocked state to a locked state;

a connection mechanism configured to engage with an implant, wherein, movement of the locking mechanism from its unlocked state to its locked state is configured to lock the connection mechanism to the implant, and movement of the locking mechanism from its locked state to its unlocked state is configured to unlock the connection mechanism from the implant; and

a sleeve engaged to a pivoting member with a spring mechanism biasing the sleeve towards the pivoting member, the pivoting member being rotatable relative to the sleeve from a first orientation in which the pivoting member has a first footprint in a horizontal direction to a second orientation in which the pivoting member has a second footprint in the horizontal direction smaller than the first footprint, wherein the pivoting member is engaged with a spring that biases the pivoting member towards its first orientation.

15. A surgical inserter as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the pivoting member is pivotable to the second orientation substantially in line with the inserter.

16. A surgical inserter as claimed in claim 15 , wherein the pivoting member is movable in a longitudinal direction from a first proximal position in the first orientation to a second more proximal position in the second orientation.

17. A surgical inserter comprising:

an actuation member movably engaged to a locking mechanism, wherein movement of the actuation member from a first position to a second position causes the locking mechanism to move from an unlocked state to a locked state;

a connection mechanism configured to engage with an implant, wherein, movement of the locking mechanism from its unlocked state to its locked state is configured to lock the connection mechanism to the implant, and movement of the locking mechanism from its locked state to its unlocked state is configured to unlock the connection mechanism from the implant and a sleeve engaged to a pivoting member, the pivoting member being rotatable relative to the sleeve from a first orientation in which the pivoting member has a first footprint in a horizontal direction to a second orientation in which the pivoting member has a second footprint in the horizontal direction smaller than the first footprint, wherein the pivoting member is engaged with a spring that biases the pivoting member towards its first orientation, a drive shaft operatively engaged to the actuation member and to the locking mechanism, the actuation member comprising a knob rotatably engaged to the inserter, wherein rotation of the knob relative to the inserter causes longitudinal movement of the drive shaft, thereby resulting in movement of the locking mechanism from its unlocked state to its locked state.
