Abstract

A collection system for monitoring conditions of a rack of animal cages. An animal caging system including a plurality of animal cages removably connected to an exhaust. A collection media cartridge is slidably received within an opening in a collection media housing dock. The collection media housing dock is positioned between an exhaust plenum of the rack an exhaust air inlet unit. Collection media is removably received in the collection media cartridge. Exhaust air dust clings to the collection media as exhaust from the animal cages flows along the length of the collection media. The collection media cartridge can be removed from the collection media housing dock and the collection media can be removed for sampling the exhaust.

Claims (39)

1. A collection system for monitoring animal health comprising:

a collection media housing dock, the collection media housing dock having an opening in a side surface,

a collection media cartridge, the collection media cartridge adapted for removably retaining collection media,

wherein the collection media cartridge is slidably received within the opening of the collection media housing dock and the collection media captures environmental air dust and pathogens within exhaust received from a rack supporting at least one animal cage.

2. The collection system of claim 1 wherein the collection media cartridge retains a plurality of the collection media.

3. The collection system of claim 1 wherein the collection media cartridge includes a first portion and a second portion, a first of the collection media configured to be received in the first portion and a second of the collection media configured to be received in the second portion.

4. The collection system of claim 1 wherein the collection media housing dock is formed of a flexible material.

5. The collection system of claim 1 wherein the collection media housing dock is formed of polypropylene, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride.

6. The collection system of claim 1 wherein the collection media cartridge is formed of plastic.

7. A collection system comprising:

a collection media housing dock, the collection media housing dock having an opening in a side surface, and

a collection media cartridge, the collection media cartridge adapted for removably retaining collection media,

wherein the collection system is adapted to be connected between an exhaust plenum of a rack for supporting at least one animal cage and an airflow hose, the airflow hose being connected to an exhaust air handling unit and wherein the collection media cartridge is slidably received within the opening of the collection media housing dock.

8. A collection system comprising:

a collection media housing dock, the collection media housing dock having an opening in a side surface, and

a collection media cartridge, the collection media cartridge adapted for removably retaining collection media,

wherein the collection system is adapted to be connected between inlet of an exhaust air handling unit and an airflow hose, the airflow hose being connected to an exhaust plenum of a rack of animal cages and wherein the collection media cartridge is slidably received within the opening of the collection media housing dock.

9. A collection system comprising:

a collection media housing dock, the collection media housing dock having an opening in a side surface, and

a collection media cartridge, the collection media cartridge adapted for removably retaining collection media, wherein the collection media cartridge includes a base and a door, the door of the collection media cartridge can be opened to receive and remove the collection media and wherein the collection media cartridge is slidably received within the opening of the collection media housing dock.

10. The collection system of claim 9 further comprising a latch attached to outer end of door, wherein in a closed position, the latch is snap fit into latch opening in the base.

11. The collection system of claim 9 wherein the door is attached with hinges to the base.

12. The collection system of claim 9 wherein the door of the collection media holder is formed of a plurality of horizontal members extending from a vertical member to form a grid pattern, the grid pattern adapted to retain the collection media.

13. A collection system comprising:

a collection media housing dock, the collection media housing dock having an opening in a side surface,

a collection media cartridge, the collection media cartridge adapted for removably retaining collection media, and a ring mounting attached to the collection media housing dock wherein the collection media cartridge is slidably received within the opening of the collection media housing dock.

14. The collection system of claim 13 wherein said ring mounting is adapted to fit into a terminus of an exhaust plenum.

15. The collection system of claim 13 wherein said ring mounting is adapted to fit into a terminus of an exhaust plenum.

16. A collection system comprising:

a collection media housing dock, the collection media housing dock having an opening in a side surface, and

a collection media cartridge, the collection media cartridge adapted for removably retaining collection media, wherein the opening is positioned at an angle in the side surface of the collection media housing, wherein the collection media holder received in the opening is angled within a cavity of the collection media dock, the cavity extending the length of the collection media dock and wherein the collection media cartridge is slidably received within the opening of the collection media housing dock.

17. The collection system of claim 16 wherein the opening is angled at an angle in a range of about 50 to about 75 degrees.

18. The collection system of claim 17 wherein a projection extends from the flange of the collection media cartridge.

19. The collection system of claim 16 wherein the opening is angled at an angle of 60 degrees.

20. A collection system comprising:

a collection media housing dock, the collection media housing dock having an opening in a side surface, and

a collection media cartridge, the collection media cartridge adapted for removably retaining collection media, wherein the opening is formed in a docking portion extending from the side surface of the collection media housing dock and the collection media cartridge includes a flange, wherein when the collection media cartridge is received in the opening the flange extends over the docking portion for sealing the collection media cartridge to the collection media housing and wherein the collection media cartridge is slidably received within the opening of the collection media housing dock.

21. A collection system comprising a first rack of animal cages and a second rack of animal cages, a first collection media housing dock positioned between an exhaust plenum of the first rack and an exhaust air handling unit, the first collection media housing dock having an opening in a side surface, a first collection media cartridge, the first collection media cartridge adapted for removably retaining collection media, the first collection media cartridge is slidably received within the opening of the first collection media housing dock

and a second collection media housing dock positioned between an exhaust plenum of the second rack and the exhaust air handling unit the second collection media housing dock having an opening in a side surface, a second collection media cartridge, the second collection media cartridge adapted for removably retaining collection media, the second collection media cartridge is slidably received within the opening of the second collection media housing dock.
