Abstract

The invention relates in some aspects to a device for use in the transcatheter treatment of mitral valve regurgitation, including steerable guidewires, implantable coaptation assistance devices, anchoring systems for attaching a ventricular projection of an implantable coaptation device, a kit, and methods of using an implantable coaptation assistance device among other methods.

Claims (25)

1. A method of using an implantable coaptation assistance device, comprising:

positioning an implant over a posterior leaflet of a mitral valve, the implant comprising a hub and a plurality of struts, the implant comprising a superior edge, an inferior edge, a first lateral edge, and a second lateral edge, the plurality of struts comprising a first section and a second section, the first section extending through at least a portion of the implant between the superior edge and the inferior edge, the second section extending through at least a portion of the implant between the first lateral edge and the second lateral edge;

positioning the hub of the implant on the annulus of the mitral valve;

engaging a helical anchor and a shaft body, wherein the helical anchor comprise a proximal shoulder, wherein the proximal shoulder comprises one or more windows, wherein the shaft body comprises one or more locking tabs pushed into engagement with the one or more windows when an elongate member is present within the shaft body;

rotating the helical anchor into the annulus by applying torque to the shaft body; and

retracting the elongate member relative to the shaft body causing the one or more locking tabs to fall back from the one or more windows of the proximal shoulder of the helical anchor, thus unlocking the helical anchor and the shaft body.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising folding the implant for delivery.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein as the implant opens, the implant assumes a shape memory shape.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising engaging passive hooks of the implant with tissue.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining how far the anchor has traveled.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the helical tissue anchor comprises fluoroscopic markers.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant comprises a coaptation assistance body, wherein the coaptation assist body comprises a first surface and a second surface, opposed to the first surface.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of struts comprise a shape memory material.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of struts comprise nitinol.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluoroscopic markers are present on a proximal end of the helical anchor to inform the user when the helical anchor is securely in place.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more locking tabs comprise shape memory material.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more locking tabs comprise nitinol.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein a natural position of two or more locking tabs is set such that two or more locking tabs bend inwards and towards each other.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising advancing an implant sheath over the implant.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant provides a new coaptation surface so that regurgitant flows are reduced or eliminated.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant treats mitral valve regurgitation.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant directly enhances leaflet coaptation.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant does not disrupt leaflet anatomy.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant is implemented without stopping the heart or relying on a heart-lung machine.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant provides a new coaptation surface over the posterior leaflet.
