Abstract

Embodiments are directed toward measuring a three dimensional range to a target. A transmitter emits light toward the target. An aperture may receive light reflections from the target. The aperture may direct the reflections toward a sensor that comprises rows of pixels that have columns. The sensor is offset a predetermined distance from the transmitter. Anticipated arrival times of the reflections on the sensor are based on the departure times and the predetermined offset distance. A portion of the pixels are sequentially activated based on the anticipated arrival times. The target's three dimensional range measurement is based on the reflections detected by the portion of the pixels.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the activation of the one or more portions, further comprises:

determining a length of a period of time for activation of the one or more portions, wherein the time period length is bounded by the one or more departure times and the one or more arrival times.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to the determination of the three-dimensional range being within a near range, increasing a frequency of each departure time; and

in response to the determination of the three-dimensional range being outside a near range, decreasing the frequency of the each departure time.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmission of the light towards the target further comprises:

generating pulses of the transmitted light that include a separate color of light including one or more of blue, green or red.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of pixels further comprise:

a plurality of stacked photodiodes, wherein each of the stacked photodiodes is sensitive to detect a separate color of transmitted light including one or more of blue, green or red.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to the determined range of the target being less than a predetermined distance, broadening a field of view of an imaging device; and

in response to the determined range of the target being more than the predetermined distance, narrowing the field of view.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the light towards the target further comprises:

providing epipolar alignment of the transmitted light for a plurality of scanned lines with a plurality of rows of pixels in the receiver to reduce one more of pin cushion distortion or barrel distortion caused by an optical element of the receiver.

8. A device to measure a three-dimensional range to a target, comprising:

one or more transmitters to transmit light toward the target;

one or more receivers to detect one or more reflections of the transmitted light;

one or more memory devices that store instructions; and

one or more processors that execute the instructions that are configured to cause actions, including:

determining one or more arrival times of the one or more reflections based on one or more departure times of the transmitted light and a physical offset of the receiver;

activating one or more portions of a plurality of pixels for the receiver based on the one or more determined arrival times;

employing the one or more activated portions to detect one or more photons received from the one or more reflections; and

determining the three-dimensional range based on the one or more activated portions having one or more pixels that detect the one or more photons and the physical offset of the receiver.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the activation of the one or more portions, further comprises:

determining a length of a period of time for activation of the one or more portions, wherein the time period length is bounded by the one or more departure times and the one or more arrival times.

10. The device of claim 8 , further comprising:

in response to the determination of the three-dimensional range being within a near range, increasing a frequency of each departure time; and

in response to the determination of the three-dimensional range being outside a near range, decreasing the frequency of the each departure time.

11. The device of claim 8 , wherein transmission of the light towards the target further comprises:

generating pulses of the transmitted light that include a separate color of light including one or more of blue, green or red.

12. The device of claim 8 , wherein each of the plurality of pixels further comprise:

a plurality of stacked photodiodes, wherein each of the stacked photodiodes is sensitive to detect a separate color of transmitted light including one or more of blue, green or red.

13. The device of claim 8 , further comprising:

in response to the determined range of the target being less than a predetermined distance, broadening a field of view of an imaging device; and

in response to the determined range of the target being more than the predetermined distance, narrowing the field of view.

14. The device of claim 8 , wherein transmitting the light towards the target further comprises:

providing epipolar alignment of the transmitted light for a plurality of scanned lines with a plurality of rows of pixels in the receiver to reduce one more of pin cushion distortion or barrel distortion caused by an optical element of the receiver.
