Abstract

In one embodiment, an ambulatory encoding monitor recorder optimized for rescalable encoding and a method of use are provided. The monitor recorder includes a memory configured to store a plurality of codes and a plurality of electrocardiographic values associated with each of the codes; and a micro-processor configured to obtain electrocardiographic values during a sequence of temporal windows and to process the electrocardiographic values within each of the windows, the processing including: perform a mathematical operation on two of the electrocardiographic values; analyze a result of each of the mathematical operations; based on the analysis, adjust the plurality of the electrocardiographic values associated with each of the codes; encode each of the electrocardiography values within that window with one of the codes based on the adjusted plurality of the electrocardiographic values associated with that code; and write each of the codes into a sequence in the memory.

Claims (44)

1. An ambulatory encoding monitor optimized for rescalable encoding, comprising:

a memory configured to store a plurality of codes and an electrocardiographic value range associated with each of the codes;

electrocardiographic electrodes configured to be positioned in a region of a sternal midline of a patient to facilitate sensing of P-waves;

an electrocardiographic front end circuit that is operable to sense electrocardiographic signals comprising one or more of the P-waves through the electrocardiographic electrodes;

a micro-processor interfaced to the electrocardiographic front end configured to obtain based on the electrocardiographic signals electrocardiographic values during a sequence of temporal windows and to process the electrocardiographic values associated with each of the windows, the processing comprising:

perform a mathematical operation on two of the electrocardiographic values associated with each of the temporal windows;

analyze a result of each of the mathematical operations;

based on the analysis for at least one of the windows, adjust the plurality of the electrocardiographic value range associated with each of the codes;

encode each of the electrocardiographic values associated with that window with one of the codes based on the adjusted electrocardiographic value range associated with that code, wherein the encoding with the adjusted electrocardiographic value ranges enhances detection of the one or more P-waves based on at least a portion of the electrocardiographic values associated with that window; and

write each of the codes into a sequence in the memory.

2. An ambulatory encoding monitor optimized for rescalable encoding according to claim 1 , further comprising a disposable electrode patch on which the electrodes are provided.

3. An ambulatory encoding monitor optimized for rescalable encoding according to claim 1 , the micro-processor further configured to:

define a duration of each of the temporal windows and a value of a threshold used in the analysis.

4. An ambulatory encoding monitor optimized for rescalable encoding according to claim 3 , wherein the threshold is adjusted upon the adjustment of the electrocardiographic value range associated with each of the codes.

5. An ambulatory encoding monitor optimized for rescalable encoding according to claim 3 , the micro-processor further configured to:

compare the result to the threshold, wherein the electrocardiographic value range associated with each of the codes are resealed by a common factor upon the result being less than the threshold.

6. An ambulatory encoding monitor optimized for rescalable encoding according to claim 5 , the micro-processor further configured to:

determine a difference between the result and the threshold;

compare the difference to one of electrocardiographic values in the electrocardiographic value range associated with one of the codes; and

upon the difference exceeding the value, rescale the electrocardiographic value range associated with each of the codes by a further factor one or more times.

7. An ambulatory encoding monitor optimized for rescalable encoding according to claim 6 , wherein the further factor is greater than the common factor.

8. An ambulatory encoding monitor optimized for rescalable encoding according to claim 6 , the micro-processor further configured to insert a message regarding the resealing by the further factor into the memory.

9. An ambulatory encoding monitor optimized for rescalable encoding according to claim 1 , wherein the electrocardiographic value ranges associated with the codes are stored in a table.

10. A method for rescalable encoding on ambulatory monitor, comprising:

maintaining in a memory of an ambulatory monitor a plurality of codes and an electrocardiographic value range associated with each of the codes, the monitor further comprising electrocardiographic electrodes configured to be positioned in a region of a sternal midline of a patient to facilitate sensing of P-waves, an electrocardiographic front end circuit that is operable to sense electrocardiographic signals comprising one or more of the P-waves through the electrocardiographic electrodes, and a micro-processor interfaced to the electrocardiographic front end; and

obtaining by the micro-processor of the monitor based on the electrocardiographic signals electrocardiographic values during a sequence of temporal windows and processing by the micro-processor the electrocardiographic values associated with each of the windows, the processing comprising:

performing a mathematical operation on two of the electrocardiographic values associated with each of the temporal windows;

analyzing a result of each of the mathematical operations;

based on the analysis for at least one of the windows, adjusting the electrocardiographic value range associated with each of the codes;

encoding each of the electrocardiographic values within that window with one of the codes based on the adjusted electrocardiographic value range associated with that code, wherein the encoding with the adjusted electrocardiographic value ranges enhances detection of the one or more P-waves based on at least a portion of the electrocardiographic values associated with that window; and

writing each of the codes into a sequence in the memory.

11. A method according to claim 10 , wherein the monitor further comprises a disposable electrode patch on which the electrodes are provided.

12. A method according to claim 10 , further comprising:

defining a duration of each of the temporal windows and a value of a threshold used in the analysis.

13. A method according to claim 12 , wherein the threshold is adjusted upon the adjustment of the electrocardiographic value range associated with each of the codes.

14. A method according to claim 12 , further comprising:

comparing the result to the threshold, wherein the electrocardiographic value range associated with each of the codes are resealed by a common factor upon the result being less than the threshold.

15. A method according to claim 14 , further comprising:

determining a difference between the result and the threshold;

comparing the difference to one of electrocardiographic values in the electrocardiographic value range associated with one of the codes; and
