Abstract

A cage can be positioned around a medical balloon, such as an angioplasty balloon, to assist in a medical procedure. The cage can include a plurality of strips, each extending between a set of rings including first and second rings. As the balloon expands, the first and second rings move closer together and allow the strips to expand outward. The cage may have wedge dissectors on the strips.

Claims (34)

1. A medical balloon catheter, comprising:

an elongate member comprising a lumen, the elongate member defining a longitudinal axis;

an expandable balloon connected to the elongate member proximate a distal end of the elongate member;

a plurality of strips, each strip of the plurality of strips including a plurality of wedge dissectors spaced apart along a surface of each strip, each strip extending longitudinally along an outer surface of the expandable balloon,

a ramp of material covering lateral ends of each of the strips, the material being relatively more flexible than that of each of the strips;

a base layer on the outer surface of the expandable balloon; and

a bonding layer on top of the base layer and on an underside of each of the plurality of strips;

wherein the wedge dissectors comprise a strip-facing base surface directly adjacent the surface of each of the strips, an unhoned radially outward facing surface having a length between a proximal edge of the unhoned radially outward facing surface and a distal edge of the unhoned radially outward facing surface and defining a height of each wedge dissector, and lateral surfaces between the strip-facing base surface and the unhoned radially outward facing surface, wherein the unhoned radially outward facing surface has a first width at the proximal edge, a second width smaller than the first width between the proximal edge and the distal edge, and a third width at the distal edge larger than the second width,

wherein the expandable balloon comprises a plurality of pleats extending from the outer surface and spaced apart from the plurality of strips, wherein the expandable balloon comprises a first reduced configuration in which the wedge dissectors of each strip lie between two adjacent pleats such that a longitudinal axis of each wedge dissector of each strip is in a tangential non-perpendicular orientation with respect to the outer surface of the expandable balloon directly below each wedge dissector of each strip, and wherein the expandable balloon comprises a second expanded configuration wherein the longitudinal axis of each wedge dissector of each strip is in a perpendicular orientation with respect to the outer surface of the expandable balloon directly below each wedge dissector of each strip,

wherein the ramp of material slopes from the outer surface of the balloon to the lateral ends of each of the strips.

2. The medical balloon catheter of claim 1 , wherein the ramp of material comprises an adhesive.

3. The medical balloon catheter of claim 1 , wherein each strip of the plurality of strips comprises a textured surface.

4. The medical balloon catheter of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of tabs on an inferior-facing surface of each of the plurality of strips opposite the wedge dissectors.

5. The medical balloon catheter of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of reliefs on each of the plurality of strips.

6. The medical balloon catheter of claim 1 , wherein the base layer comprises a polymer.

7. The medical balloon catheter of claim 1 , wherein the bonding layer comprises a cyanoacrylate.

8. The medical balloon catheter of claim 1 , further comprising a first retention bonding layer and a second retention bonding layer on top of the bonding layer, wherein the first retention bonding layer and a second retention bonding layer comprise the same material.

9. A medical balloon catheter, comprising:

an elongate member comprising a lumen, the elongate member defining a longitudinal axis;

an expandable balloon connected to the elongate member proximate a distal end of the elongate member;

a plurality of strips, each strip of the plurality of strips including a plurality of wedge dissectors spaced apart along a surface of each strip, each strip extending longitudinally along an outer surface of the expandable balloon,

a ramp of material covering lateral ends of each of the strips, the material being relatively more flexible than that of each of the strips;

a base layer on the outer surface of the expandable balloon; and

a bonding layer on top of the base layer and on an underside of each of the plurality of strips; and

a first retention bonding layer and a second retention bonding layer on top of the bonding layer, wherein the first retention bonding layer and a second retention bonding layer comprise the same material,

wherein the wedge dissectors comprise a strip-facing base surface directly adjacent the surface of each of the strips, an unhoned radially outward facing surface having a length between a proximal edge of the unhoned radially outward facing surface and a distal edge of the unhoned radially outward facing surface and defining a height of each wedge dissector, and lateral surfaces between the strip-facing base surface and the unhoned radially outward facing surface, wherein the unhoned radially outward facing surface has a first width at the proximal edge, a second width smaller than the first width between the proximal edge and the distal edge, and a third width at the distal edge larger than the second width,

wherein the expandable balloon comprises a plurality of pleats extending from the outer surface and spaced apart from the plurality of strips, wherein the expandable balloon comprises a first reduced configuration in which the wedge dissectors of each strip lie between two adjacent pleats such that a longitudinal axis of each wedge dissector of each strip is in a tangential non-perpendicular orientation with respect to the outer surface of the expandable balloon directly below each wedge dissector of each strip, and wherein the expandable balloon comprises a second expanded configuration wherein the longitudinal axis of each wedge dissector of each strip is in a perpendicular orientation with respect to the outer surface of the expandable balloon directly below each wedge dissector of each strip.

10. The medical balloon catheter of claim 9 , wherein the ramp of material slopes from the outer surface of the balloon to the lateral ends of each of the strips.

11. The medical balloon catheter of claim 9 , wherein the ramp of material comprises an adhesive.

12. The medical balloon catheter of claim 9 , wherein each strip of the plurality of strips comprises a textured surface.

13. The medical balloon catheter of claim 9 , further comprising a plurality of tabs on an inferior-facing surface of each of the plurality of strips opposite the wedge dissectors.

14. The medical balloon catheter of claim 9 , further comprising a plurality of reliefs on each of the plurality of strips.

15. The medical balloon catheter of claim 9 , wherein the base layer comprises a polymer.

16. The medical balloon catheter of claim 9 , wherein the bonding layer comprises a cyanoacrylate.
