Abstract

A wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD) comprises a support structure to be worn by a patient, an energy storage module to store an electrical charge, a discharge circuit coupled to the energy storage module, a measurement circuit, a user interface that includes a speaker, and a processor. The processor is configured to monitor a physiological signal of a patient with the measurement circuit to detect cardiac arrhythmia when the patient is wearing the support structure, determine whether a validation criterion is met in response to detection of a cardiac arrhythmia, provide no alarm with the user interface the validation criterion is being determined, and cause a shock to be delivered to the patient from the energy storage module by the discharge circuit in the event the validation criterion is met.

Claims (22)

1. A wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD), comprising:

a support structure configured to be worn by a patient;

a power source;

an energy storage module configured to receive an electrical charge from the power source, and to store the received electrical charge;

a discharge circuit coupled to the energy storage module, the discharge circuit controllable to discharge the stored electrical charge to cause a shock to be delivered to the patient while the support structure is worn by the patient;

a measurement circuit configured to obtain physiological inputs from an electrocardiogram (ECG) signal of the patient;

a user interface configured to output one or more human-perceptible indications; and

a processor configured to:

detect a cardiac arrhythmia of the patient from one of the physiological inputs;

determine, from a subsequent one of the physiological inputs, whether the detected cardiac arrhythmia is validated according to a validation criterion; and

responsive to a determination that the detected cardiac arrhythmia is not validated, cause the discharge circuit to not deliver a shock for a first preset time period from when it was determined that the detected cardiac arrhythmia is not so validated; otherwise

responsive to a determination that the detected cardiac arrhythmia is validated, control the discharge circuit to instead deliver a shock within a second preset time period shorter than the first preset time period from when it was determined that the detected cardiac arrhythmia is validated.

2. The WCD of claim 1 , wherein the user interface does not output a human-perceptible indication if the detected cardiac arrhythmia is not validated.

3. The WCD of claim 1 , wherein the user interface does not output a human-perceptible indication if the detected cardiac arrhythmia self-terminates before being validated.

4. The WCD of claim 1 , wherein the user interface does not output a human-perceptible indication during a period when the processor determines whether the detected cardiac arrhythmia is validated.

5. A wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD), comprising: a support structure to be worn by a patient; an energy storage module to store an electrical charge; a discharge circuit coupled to the energy storage module; a measurement circuit; a user interface that includes a speaker; and a processor configured to: monitor a physiological signal of a patient with the measurement circuit to detect cardiac arrhythmia when the patient is wearing the support structure; determine whether a validation criterion is met in response to detection of a cardiac arrhythmia;

provide no alarm with the user interface while the validation criterion is being determined;

cause the discharge circuit to not deliver a shock for a first preset time period after detection of the cardiac arrhythmia;

and cause a shock to be delivered to the patient from the energy storage module by the discharge circuit within a second preset time period shorter than the first preset time period in the event the validation criterion is met.

6. The WCD of claim 5 , wherein no alarm is provided in the event the detected cardiac arrhythmia self-terminates before the validation criterion is met.

7. The WCD of claim 5 , wherein the user interface does not output an alarm if the detected cardiac arrhythmia self-terminates before being validated.

8. The WCD of claim 5 , wherein the user interface does not output an alarm during a period when the processor determines whether the detected cardiac arrhythmia is validated.
