Abstract

A device includes an optical circuit that obtains a first signal at a first wavelength using light reflected from skin tissue of a patient, wherein the first wavelength has a high absorption coefficient for nitric oxide (NO) in blood flow and a second PPG signal at a second wavelength using light reflected from skin tissue of the patient, wherein the second wavelength has a low absorption coefficient for NO in blood flow. A measurement of a level of NO in blood flow is determined using the first PPG signal and the second PPG signal. A health condition is determined using the measurement of the level of NO, such as hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia.

Claims (40)

1. A device, comprising:

an optical circuit including a light source and a photodetector, the optical circuit configured to:

emit light using the light source at each of a first wavelength having a high absorption coefficient for nitric oxide (NO) in blood flow and a second wavelength having a low absorption coefficient for NO in blood flow;

measure reflections of the light emitted by the light source from skin tissue of a patient to obtain each of a first photoplethysmography (PPG) signal corresponding to reflected light at the first wavelength and a second PPG signal corresponding to reflected light at the second wavelength; and

at least one processing circuit configured to:

determine a measurement using the first PPG signal and the second PPG signal, the measurement corresponding to an indication for hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia;

compare the measurement to a predetermined normal range for the measurement; and

determine whether the measurement is outside of the predetermined normal range.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the measurement includes an AC component of the first PPG signal.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the measurement includes a ratio of an AC component of the first PPG signal and an AC component of the second PPG signal.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the measurement includes a level of NO in the blood flow of the patient.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the measurement includes a level of glucose in the blood flow of the patient.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the optical circuit is configured on a patch, wrist band, finger attachment or ear piece.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the optical circuit and the at least one processing circuit is configured on a patch, wrist band or ear piece.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processing circuit is further configured to generate an alert in response to the measurement being outside of the predetermined normal range.

9. A device, comprising:

an optical circuit including a light source and a photodetector, the optical circuit configured to:

emit light using the light source at each of a first wavelength having a high absorption coefficient for nitric oxide (NO) in blood flow and a second wavelength having a low absorption coefficient for NO in blood flow;

measure reflections of the light emitted by the light source from skin tissue of a patient to obtain each of a first photoplethysmography (PPG) signal corresponding to reflected light at the first wavelength and a second PPG signal corresponding to reflected light at the second wavelength; and

at least one processing circuit configured to:

determine a measurement of a level of NO in blood flow using the first PPG signal and the second PPG signal;

compare the measurement of the level of NO to a predetermined normal range for NO for a health condition; and

determine the measurement of the level of NO is outside of the predetermined normal range.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to generate an alert when the measurement of the level of NO is outside of the predetermined normal range.

11. The device of claim 9 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to generate a display of the measurement of the level of NO.

12. The device of claim 9 , wherein the measurement of the level of NO includes an AC component of the first PPG signal.

13. The device of claim 9 , wherein the measurement of the level of NO includes a ratio of an AC component of the first PPG signal and an AC component of the second PPG signal.

14. The device of claim 9 , wherein the health condition includes one or more of:

hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, diabetic condition, insulin response, hypovolemia, vascular health, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), infection or sepsis.

15. The device of claim 9 , wherein the health condition includes a presence of one or more compounds that lead to unsafe levels of NO in blood vessels, wherein the one or more compounds include one or more of: lidocaine, nitrates such as nitroglycerin, nitric oxide, nitrogen based fertilizers, dapsone, benzocaine, cyanide, or anesthesia.

16. The device of claim 9 , further comprising a transceiver configured to transmit data to a remote user device.

17. The device of claim 9 , wherein the first wavelength having a high absorption coefficient for NO in blood flow is in a range of approximately 380 nm to 400 nm.

18. A device, comprising:

at least one processing circuit configured to:

obtain a plurality of PPG signals from at least one photodetector circuit, the plurality of PPG signals including:

a first PPG signal corresponding to a first wavelength of light reflected from skin tissue of a patient, wherein the first wavelength has a high absorption coefficient for nitric oxide (NO) in blood flow; and

a second PPG signal corresponding to a second wavelength of light reflected from skin tissue of the patient, wherein the second wavelength has a low absorption coefficient for NO in blood flow;

determine a measurement of a level of NO in blood flow using the first PPG signal and the second PPG signal;

compare the measurement of the level of NO to a predetermined normal range for NO for a health condition; and

determine the measurement of the level of NO is outside of the predetermined normal range.
