Abstract

Methods and systems for adjusting vehicle noise output in pedestrian and vehicular traffic environments are provided. When the vehicle is in operation, output from one or more sensors of the vehicle may be used to determine the presence of an object near the vehicle. In the event an object is detected, one or more characteristics of the object are determined. The vehicle will output a noise based on the determined characteristics of the detected object.

Claims (42)

1 . A method, comprising:

determining, via a processor, an operating condition of a vehicle;

receiving, via the processor, output from at least one sensor of the vehicle monitoring an environment around a portion of the vehicle, wherein the output indicates presence of an object near the portion of the vehicle;

determining, via the processor, at least one characteristic of the object;

determining, via the processor, a distance from the portion of the vehicle to the object; and

sending, via the processor, an instruction to a noise generating system of the vehicle to emit noise to warn the object near the portion of the vehicle.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one characteristic of the object comprises at least one of: mode of transportation, speed of movement, height, and/or shape and further comprising:

when the output from the at least one sensor of the vehicle indicates the absence of an object near the portion of the vehicle, sending, via the processor, an instruction to the noise control system of the vehicle to cease emission of the noise.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the mode of transportation comprises one of: motorized or non-motorized.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the mode of transportation comprises one of: walking or biking.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the instruction comprises a sound file to be played by the noise generating system and wherein the noise is generated from the sound file.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the instruction comprises a volume of a noise generated by the noise generating system.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the operating condition of the vehicle comprises at least of: speed, direction, and/or environmental conditions.

8 . A vehicle, comprising:

a noise generating system;

at least one sensor monitoring an environment around a portion of the vehicle;

a microprocessor coupled to the noise generating system and the at least one sensor; and

a computer readable medium coupled to the microprocessor and comprising instructions stored thereon that cause the microprocessor to:

determine an operating condition of the vehicle;

receive output from the at least one sensor, wherein the output indicates presence of an object near the portion of the vehicle;

determine at least one characteristic of the object;

determine a distance from the portion of the vehicle to the object; and

send an instruction to the noise control system of the vehicle to emit noise to warn the object near the portion of the vehicle.

9 . The vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the at least one characteristic of the object comprises at least one of: mode of transportation, speed of movement, height, and/or shape and wherein, when the output from the at least one sensor of the vehicle indicates the absence of an object near the portion of the vehicle, the microprocessor sends an instruction to the noise control system of the vehicle to cease emission of the noise.

10 . The vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the mode of transportation comprises one of: motorized or non-motorized.

11 . The vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the mode of transportation comprises one of: walking or biking.

12 . The vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the instruction comprises a sound file to be played by the noise control system and the noise is generated from the sound file.

13 . The vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the instruction comprises a volume of a noise generated by the noise control system.

14 . The vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the operating condition of the vehicle comprises at least of: speed, direction, and/or environmental conditions.

15 . A device, comprising:

a microprocessor; and

a computer readable medium coupled to the microprocessor and comprising instructions stored thereon that cause the microprocessor to:

determine an operating condition of a vehicle;

receive output from at least one sensor of the vehicle monitoring an environment around a portion of the vehicle, wherein the output indicates presence of an object near the portion of the vehicle;

determine at least one characteristic of the object;

determine a distance from the portion of the vehicle to the object; and

send an instruction to a noise control system of the vehicle to emit noise to warn the object near the portion of the vehicle.

16 . The device of claim 15 , wherein the at least one characteristic of the object comprises at least one of: mode of transportation, speed of movement, height, and/or shape and wherein, when the output from the at least one sensor of the vehicle indicates the absence of an object near the portion of the vehicle, the microprocessor sends an instruction to the noise control system of the vehicle to cease emission of the noise.

17 . The device of claim 16 , wherein the mode of transportation comprises one of: walking or biking.

18 . The device of claim 15 , wherein the instruction comprises a sound file to be played by the noise control system and the noise is generated from the sound file.

19 . The device of claim 15 , wherein the instruction comprises a volume of a noise generated by the noise control system.

20 . The device of claim 15 , wherein the operating condition of the vehicle comprises at least of: speed, direction, and/or environmental conditions.
