Abstract

Anchoring devices, anchoring systems for intervertebral implants, intervertebral implants, and instruments and methods for implanting implants are disclosed. In preferred configurations, these various objects share the feature of comprising or cooperating with an anchoring device having a body comprising at least one curved plate elongated along a longitudinal axis, designed to be inserted through a passage crossing at least a part of implant, in order to penetrate into at least one vertebral endplate and attach implant onto this vertebral endplate by means of at least one stop retaining the implant, characterized in that the body comprises at least one longitudinal rib on at least a part of at least one of its faces, said rib being designed to cooperate with a groove made in passage of implant. In some preferred configurations, anchoring device comprises withdrawal stops or latches, and/or means for withdrawing the anchor from an inserted position.

Claims (28)

1. A method comprising:

selecting an anchor including a body comprising a rigid, elongated, curved plate extending between a first end configured to penetrate into a vertebra and a second end configured for urging the anchor into a vertebra, the plate having a radius of curvature and a rib attached to the plate along a direction extending from the first end and the second end, the rib projecting generally orthogonally from the plate where the rib projects from the plate;

inserting the anchor into a guide within an insertion instrument, the guide including at least one guidance surface having a radius of curvature substantially the same as the radius of curvature of the plate;

coupling an intervertebral implant to a gripping device disposed at a gripping end of the guide; and

impacting the anchor into a passage within the intervertebral implant using an impactor head of the instrument.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein impacting the anchor into the passage includes passing the anchor through a peripheral wall of the intervertebral implant and projecting the anchor toward an upper vertebra or a lower vertebra without deformation of the plate.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein impacting the anchor into the passage includes guiding the rib along a complementary groove in the passage.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein coupling the intervertebral implant to the gripping device includes aligning a groove in the guide to accommodate the rib with the complementary groove in the passage to allow passage of the rib from the groove in the guide through the complementary groove in the passage.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein impacting the anchor into the passage includes at least a portion of the anchor traversing a straight portion of the passage.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising engaging a latch disposed on a posterior end of the anchor with a locking feature on the intervertebral implant after full insertion of the anchor.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising releasing the latch via an access window in the intervertebral implant to unlock the anchor from the intervertebral implant.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein impacting the anchor into the passage includes engaging a thickened portion of the anchor with an inner wall of the passage to stabilize the anchor in the intervertebral implant.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising abutting a stop on a posterior end of the anchor with a stop structure disposed adjacent the passage upon full insertion of the anchor into the intervertebral implant.

10. A method for inserting anchors into an implant along an axis substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis between vertebral bodies along a spine of a patient, the method comprising:

selecting an anchor including a rigid, elongated plate extending between a first end configured to penetrate into an endplate of a vertebra and a second end configured for impacting of the anchor into the endplate, the plate including a rib projecting generally orthogonally from the plate and extending at least partially from the first end to the second end of the plate;

inserting the anchor into a guide within an insertion instrument, the guide including at least one guidance surface complementary to the plate;

coupling the implant to a distal end of the instrument adjacent an exit from the guide; and

impacting the anchor into a passage within the implant using an impactor head extendable through the guide of the instrument.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein inserting the anchor into the guide includes aligning a radius of curvature of the plate with a complementary curved surface within the guide.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein impacting the anchor into the passage includes passing the anchor through a peripheral wall of the intervertebral implant and projecting the anchor toward an upper vertebra or a lower vertebra without deformation of the plate.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein impacting the anchor into the passage includes guiding the rib along a complementary groove in the passage.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein coupling the intervertebral implant to the instrument includes aligning a groove in the guide with the complementary groove in the passage to accommodate the rib passing between the groove and the complementary groove.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein impacting the anchor into the passage includes at least a portion of the anchor traversing a straight portion of the passage.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein impacting the anchor into the passage includes at least a portion of the anchor traversing a curved portion of the passage.

17. The method of claim 10 , further comprising engaging a latch disposed on a posterior end of the anchor with a locking feature on the implant after full insertion of the anchor.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising releasing the latch via an access window in the implant to unlock the anchor from the implant.

19. The method of claim 10 , wherein impacting the anchor into the passage includes engaging a thickened portion of the anchor with an inner wall of the passage to stabilize the anchor in the implant.

20. The method of claim 10 , further comprising abutting a stop on a posterior end of the anchor with a stop structure disposed adjacent the passage upon full insertion of the anchor into the implant.
