Abstract

Systems and methods of gaming are disclosed herein. An example method includes receiving a credit wager to initiate play of a base game. The method also includes designating a first symbol display position on the display, selecting a first symbol from a symbol set for display at the first symbol display position, evaluating whether the first symbol is an award symbol, and controlling the display to display a secondary game in response to a determination that the first symbol is an award symbol.

Claims (36)

1. An electronic gaming machine for unlocking a second occurrence of a base game triggered during play of a first occurrence of the base game, the electronic gaming machine comprising:

a display device configured to display a plurality of base games including the first occurrence of the base game and the second occurrence of the base game;

a player input interface configured to receive player input;

a credit input mechanism including at least one of a card reader, a ticket reader, a bill acceptor, and a coin input mechanism, the credit input mechanism configured to establish a credit balance that is increasable and decreasable based on wagering activity; and

a game controller configured to:

cause to be displayed, on the display device, a first game window including the first occurrence of the base game, the first game window including a first set of virtual reels, each virtual reel in the first set of virtual reels including a plurality of symbol positions;

cause to be displayed, on the display device, a second game window including the second occurrence of the base game, the second game window including a second set of virtual reels, the first game window being unlocked and the second game window being locked during a first spin of the first occurrence of the base game;

cause to be displayed, on the display device, a first spin result of the first occurrence of the base game in the first game window;

determine, based on the first spin result, an unlock condition has been met;

cause to be displayed, on the display device and in response to determining the unlock condition has been met, an unlock symbol in the second game window indicating that the second game window will be unlocked for at least one subsequent game play; and

unlock the second game window for the at least one subsequent game play, the unlocking of the second game window resulting in the second set of virtual reels being spun for the at least one subsequent game play, the at least one subsequent game play including the second occurrence of the base game.

2. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein each of the sets of virtual reels comprises a 3×5 matrix of display positions, whereupon corresponding symbols randomly selected from a plurality of symbols are displayed.

3. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein an unlock animation sequence is displayed when the second game window is unlocked.

4. The electronic gaming machine of claim 3 , wherein the unlock animation sequence comprises the unlock symbol being animated to indicate the second game window is unlocked.

5. The electronic gaming machine of claim 4 , wherein the unlock symbol is selected based on a result obtained from a random number generator.

6. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein an unlock animation sequence is displayed to indicate the second game window is being unlocked.

7. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the game controller is further configured to award credits to a player based on the first spin result and a spin result of the at least one subsequent game play.

8. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the first spin result is determined at least in part by a random number generator.

9. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the first spin result is determined at least in part by reference to a probability table.

10. The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the game controller is further configured to unlock at least a third game window based on a winning outcome of the at least one subsequent game play.

11. A method of unlocking a second occurrence of a base game triggered during play of a first occurrence of the base game on an electronic gaming machine, the electronic gaming machine including a display device configured to display a plurality of base games including the first occurrence of the base game and the second occurrence of the base game, a player input interface, a credit input mechanism including at least one of a card reader, a ticket reader, a bill acceptor, and a coin input mechanism, the credit input mechanism configured to establish a credit balance that is increasable and decreasable based on wagering activity, and a game controller, the method comprising:

causing to be displayed, by the game controller, a first game window including the first occurrence of the base game, the first game window including a first set of virtual reels, each virtual reel in the first set of virtual reels including a plurality of symbol positions;

causing to be displayed, by the game controller, a second game window including the second occurrence of the base game, the second game window including a second set of virtual reels, the first game window being unlocked and the second game window being locked during a first play of the first occurrence of the base game;

causing to be displayed, by the game controller, a first play result of the first play of the first occurrence of the base game in the first game window;

determining, based on the first play result, an unlock condition has been met;

causing to be displayed, on the display device and in response to determining the unlock condition has been met, an unlock symbol in the second game window indicating that the second game window will be unlocked for at least one subsequent game play; and

unlocking the second game window for the at least one subsequent game play, the unlocking resulting in the second set of virtual reels being spun for the at least one subsequent game play, the at least one subsequent game play including the second occurrence of the base game.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein each of the sets of virtual reels comprises a 3×5 matrix of display positions, whereupon corresponding symbols randomly selected from a plurality of symbols are displayed.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein an unlock animation sequence is displayed when the second game window is unlocked.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the unlock animation sequence comprises the unlock symbol being animated to indicate the second game window is unlocked.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the unlock symbol is selected based on a result obtained from a random number generator.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein an unlock animation sequence is displayed to indicate the second game window is being unlocked.

17. The method of claim 11 further comprising awarding credits to a player based on a total of the first play result and at least one subsequent game play result.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first play result is determined at least in part by a random number generator.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first play result is determined at least in part by reference to a probability table.

20. The method of claim 11 further comprising unlocking at least a third game window based on a play result of the at least one subsequent game play.
