Abstract

Disclosed herein is a multifunctional broadhead and universal ferrule for an archery arrow that has both mechanical and fixed configurations. The disclosure is directed to multifunctional mechanical arrow broadheads that deploy blades upon contact with a target and the ability to transition to a broadhead configured with the blades in a deployed and fixed position prior to target contact.

Claims (38)

1. A multifunctional arrow broadhead comprising

a ferrule wherein the ferrule includes a plurality of slots, a first screw/pin, and a media hole positioned below the first screw/pin and configured to engage a second screw, and wherein the media hole is positioned perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the ferrule;

at least two blades wherein the blades are configured to engage the plurality of slots and wherein the screw/pin secures the blades to the ferrule; and

a base wherein the blades are further configured to function in a first mode wherein the two blades are further configured to function in a second mode and wherein the first and second modes are user selected.

2. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 1 , wherein the first mode is a fixed blade configuration wherein the blades are extended in a deployed position.

3. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 2 , wherein the ferrule includes a fourth blade.

4. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 1 , wherein the second mode is a mechanical configuration wherein the blades are further configured in a retracted position throughout an arrow time of flight and wherein the blades deploy to an extended position upon a target impact.

5. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 4 , wherein the blades are configured to pivot from the retracted position to the extended position on an axis of the screw/pin and wherein the blades are extended through the plurality of slots.

6. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 4 , wherein the blades are held in the retracted position by insertion of a media into the media hole forming a friction fit and wherein upon the target impact the blades deploy into the extended position.

7. The multifunctional arrow of claim 6 , wherein the media is a nylon, a polymer blend, or combination thereof.

8. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 4 , wherein the blades form an angle from about 90 to 120 degrees when the blades are in the extended position.

9. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule includes a third blade.

10. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 1 , wherein a cutting diameter of the blades is at least 2 inches when the blades are extended in the first or second modes.

11. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 1 , wherein at least two thirds of the blades are contained within the ferrule when the blades are in the second mode.

12. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule is aluminum, carbon, steel, or titanium.

13. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 1 , wherein the base is threaded and configured to removably engage an arrow shaft or an arrow insert.

14. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 1 , wherein the blades have a thickness from 0.020 inches to 0.085 inches.

15. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule has a length of at least 1.25 inches and a diameter of at least 0.220 inches.

16. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule further includes a sharpened tip or a fixed blade.

17. The multifunctional arrow broadhead of claim 1 , wherein weight of the broadhead is between 115 and 125 grains.

18. A method of forming a multifunctional arrow broadhead comprising

forming a ferrule wherein the ferrule includes a plurality of slots, a first screw/pin, and a media hole positioned below the first screw/pin and configured to engage a second screw, and wherein the media hole is positioned perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the ferrule;

forming at least two blades wherein the blades are configured to engage the plurality of slots and wherein the screw/pin secures the blades to the ferrule; and

forming a base wherein the base is threaded and configured to removably engage an arrow shaft or an arrow insert,

wherein the blades are further configured to function in a first mode,

wherein the two blades are further configured to function in a second mode and wherein the first and second modes are user selected,

wherein the first mode is a fixed blade configuration wherein the blades are extended in a deployed position, and

wherein the second mode is a mechanical configuration wherein the blades are further configured in a retracted position wherein the blades are held in the retracted position by insertion of a media into the media hole forming a friction fit throughout an arrow time of flight and wherein the blades deploy to an extended position upon a target impact.

19. A multifunctional arrow broadhead system comprising

a ferrule wherein the ferrule includes a plurality of slots, a first screw/pin, and a media hole positioned below the first screw/pin and configured to engage a second screw, and wherein the media hole is positioned perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the ferrule;

a plurality of blades wherein the blades are configured to engage the plurality of slots and wherein the screw/pin secures the blades to the ferrule; and

a base;

wherein the blades are further configured to function in a first mode,

wherein the first mode is a fixed blade configuration with the blades extended in a deployed position,

wherein the blades are further configured to function in a second mode,

wherein the second mode is a mechanical configuration with the blades further configured in a retracted position and held in the retracted position by insertion of a media into the media hole forming a friction fit throughout an arrow time of flight with the blades further configured to deploy to an extended position upon a target impact, and

wherein the first and second modes are user selected.

20. The multifunctional arrow broadhead system of claim 19 , wherein the plurality of blades is interchangeable with each other.
