Abstract

Biometric data are obtained from biometric sensors on a stand-alone computing device, which may contain an ASIC, connected to or incorporated within it. The computing device and ASIC, in combination or individually, capture biometric samples, extract biometric features and match them to one or more locally stored, encrypted templates. The biometric matching may be enhanced by the use of an entered PIN. The biometric templates and other sensitive data at rest are encrypted using hardware elements of the computing device and ASIC, and/or a PIN hash. A stored obfuscated Password is de-obfuscated and may be released to the authentication mechanism in response to successfully decrypted templates and matching biometric samples. A different de-obfuscated password may be released to authenticate the user to a remote or local computer and to encrypt data in transit. This eliminates the need for the user to remember and enter complex passwords on the device.

Claims (26)

1. A payment card customized for a card owner comprising:

an embedded integrated circuit having a storage area and a set of executable instructions; wherein the at least one storage area includes at least one previously enrolled biometric template, encrypted using an algorithm and a key derived from at least one of a hardware calculated value and an identity verification credential previously established by the card owner, and

wherein, when the payment card is coupled to a payment card reader responsive to at least one of a successful match of an identity verification credential entered by the user to the previously established user identity verification credential and the successful match of a submitted biometric sample to the biometric template, the payment card and the payment card reader process a payment transaction.

The payment card of claim 1 where the payment transaction is further processed by securely communicating the payment transaction details and an encrypted version of the cardholder's identity verification credential to a relying party to authorize the transaction; wherein a decrypted version of the cardholder's identity verification credential is not stored on the payment card.

3. The payment card of claim 2 where the relying party is at least one of the following a payment processing authority, payment card issuer, or merchant bank.

4. The payment card of claim 1 where, prior to matching, the biometric sample is processed to allow the biometric sample to be submitted at substantially any angle.

5. The payment card of claim 4 where the biometric template represents a plurality of biometric samples, which have been preprocessed to a consistent angle of inclination.

6. The payment card of claim 1 where the biometric template adapts automatically after a biometric sample is successfully matched, enabling the biometric template to be updated as the biometric samples change over time.

7. The payment card of claim 1 where, in the event of at least one of the biometric sample not matching with the biometric template and the entered identity verification credential not matching with the previously captured identity verification credential, the payment card and the payment card reader implement a failure routine as defined by the relying party.

8. A security card customized for a card owner comprising:

an embedded integrated circuit having a storage area and a set of executable instructions; wherein the at least one storage area includes at least one previously enrolled biometric template, encrypted using an algorithm and a key derived from at least one of a hardware calculated value and an identity verification credential previously established by the security card owner, and

wherein, when the security card is coupled to a security card reader responsive to at least one of a successful match of an identity verification credential entered by the user to the previously established user identity verification credential and the successful match of a submitted biometric sample to the biometric template, the security card and the security card reader cause the card user to gain access to a physical location.

The security card of claim 8 wherein the security transaction is further processed by securely communicating the security transaction details and an encrypted version of the cardholder's identity verification credential to a remote computer to authorize access; wherein a decrypted version of the cardholder's identity verification credential is not stored on the payment card.

10. The security card of claim 8 wherein, prior to matching, the said biometric sample is processed to allow the biometric sample to be submitted at substantially any angle.

11. The security card of claim 10 wherein the said biometric template represents a plurality of biometric samples, which have been preprocessed to a consistent angle of inclination.

12. The security card of claim 8 wherein the biometric template adapts automatically after a biometric sample is successfully matched, enabling the biometric template to be updated as the biometric samples change over time.

13. A payment card for conducting a financial transaction comprising:

an embedded integrated circuit having a storage function and a set of executable instructions;

at least one sensor configured to acquire biometric data from a specific user to implement security functions prior to authorizing a transaction wherein the embedded integrated circuit includes at least one encrypted biometric template of the specific user created during an enrollment process such that during authentication, the at least one encrypted biometric template is decrypted based on the set of executable instructions and compared to the acquired biometric data from the specific user, and upon a successful match of the acquired biometric data from the specific user to the decrypted biometric template, indicating such match to a remote computer authorizing the financial transaction, wherein the decrypted biometric is not unsecurely stored in persistent memory.

14. The card of claim 13 wherein based on the indication of a match, the financial transaction is approved.

15. The card of claim 13 wherein the acquired biometric data is processed to allow the data to be effectively used for matching despite being acquired at varying angles.

16. The card of claim 13 wherein the acquired biometric data is processed such that coordinates are substantially invariant with respect to the original angle of submission.

17. The card of claim 13 wherein the biometric template adapts after a biometric sample is successfully matched, enabling the biometric template to be updated as the biometric samples change over time.

18. The card of claim 13 wherein, in the event of the acquired biometric data not matching with the biometric template a failure routine is implemented.

The card of claim 13 , wherein the at least one encrypted biometric template of the specific user created during an enrollment process is decrypted at least partially on a remote computer, and based upon a successful match of the submitted biometric sample to the decrypted biometric template on the remote computer, indicating a match and thereby authorizing the financial transaction, wherein the decrypted biometric is not unsecurely stored in persistent memory on the card.

20. The card of claim 13 whereby, in the event the submitted biometric sample does not match with the decrypted biometric template, the financial transaction shall be subject to an agreed failure action by one or both of the card issuer and the relying party.
