Abstract

In one embodiment, an apparatus and associated method are provided, comprising: at a device having a display and a touch-sensitive surface: displaying a first user interface of a first application on the display; while displaying the first user interface of the first application on the display, detecting an input by a first contact; and in response to detecting the input by the first contact: in accordance with a determination that the input meets first one or more criteria, wherein the first one or more criteria require that the first movement meets a first directional condition in order for the first one or more criteria to be met, displaying a second user interface; and in accordance with a determination that the input meets second one or more criteria, wherein the second one or more criteria require that the first movement meets a second directional condition that is distinct from the first directional condition in order for the second one or more criteria to be met, displaying a home screen user interface.

Claims (261)

1. A method, comprising:

at an electronic device having a display and a touch-sensitive surface:

displaying a first user interface of a first application on the display;

while displaying the first user interface of the first application on the display, detecting an input by a first contact, including detecting touch-down of the first contact at a first location on the touch-sensitive surface, detecting first movement of the first contact across the touch-sensitive surface from the first location on the touch-sensitive surface, and detecting liftoff of the first contact at an end of the first movement, and

in response to detecting the input by the first contact:

in accordance with a determination that the input meets last-application-display criteria, wherein the last-application-display criteria require that the first movement of the first contact from the first location on the touch-sensitive surface meets a first directional condition in order for the last-application-display criteria to be met, displaying a second user interface of a second application that is distinct from the first application; and

in accordance with a determination that the input meets home-display criteria, wherein the home-display criteria require that the first movement of the first contact from the first location on the touch-sensitive surface meets a second directional condition that is distinct from the first directional condition in order for the home-display criteria to be met, displaying a home screen user interface that includes a plurality of application launch icons that correspond to a plurality of applications installed on the electronic device,

wherein:

the first movement of the first contact includes movement of the first contact from the first location to a second location across the touch-sensitive surface, followed by movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

the method includes, in response to detecting the input by the first contact, moving a representation of the first user interface of the first application to a first updated position on the display in accordance with the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria includes transitioning from displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria; and

displaying the home screen user interface in accordance with the determination that the input meets the home-display criteria includes transitioning from displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to displaying the home screen user interface in accordance with the determination that the input meets the home-display criteria.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

transitioning from displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to displaying the second user interface of the second application includes displaying a first animated transition between displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria; and

transitioning from displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to displaying the home screen user interface includes displaying a second animated transition between displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to displaying the home screen user interface in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the first contact is detected within a predefined edge region of the touch-sensitive surface, and an initial portion of the first movement includes movement in a vertical direction and movement in a horizontal direction relative to a predefined edge of the touch-sensitive surface.

The method of claim 1 , including: in response to detecting the input by the first contact: in accordance with a determination that the input meets application-switcher-display criteria that are distinct from the home-display criteria and the last-application-display criteria, wherein the application-switcher-display criteria require that the first movement meets the second directional condition in order for the application-switcher-display criteria to be met, displaying an application-switcher user interface that includes a first application view that corresponds to the first user interface of the first application and a second application view that corresponds to a second user interface of a second application that is different from the first application.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the application-switcher-display criteria include a first criterion that is met when the first movement includes a predefined pause and the first contact makes less than a first threshold amount of movement after the predefined pause.

The method of claim 4 , wherein: the application-switcher-display criteria include a second criterion that is met when a predefined movement parameter of the first movement is in a first value range; and the home-display criteria include a third criterion that is met when the predefined movement parameter of the first movement is in a second value range that is different from the first value range.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein at least one of:

the last-application-display criteria includes more than one criteria;

the home-display criteria includes more than one criteria;

the application-switcher-display criteria includes more than one criteria;

the last-application-display criteria is related to the last-application-display, by resulting in display of the second application that was last displayed before display of the first application;

the last-application-display criteria is related to the last-application-display, by resulting in display of the second application that was last displayed;

the home-display criteria is related to the home-display, by resulting in display of the home screen user interface;

the application-switcher-display criteria is related to the application-switcher-display, by resulting in display of the application-switcher user interface;

the displaying is performed in response to detecting the input by the first contact, by being performed in response to detecting an end of the first contact;

the displaying is performed in response to detecting the input by the first contact, by being performed in response to detecting any portion of the first contact;

the while displaying the first user interface on the display, includes any point in time when the first user interface is displayed on the display;

the while displaying the first user interface on the display, includes an entirety of a duration when the first user interface is displayed on the display;

the while displaying the first user interface on the display, includes only part of a duration when the first user interface is displayed on the display;

the while displaying the first user interface on the display, includes only when the first user interface is displayed on the display;

the second value range is different from the first value range, by the second value range being mutually exclusive of the first value range;

the second value range is different from the first value range, without the second value range being mutually exclusive of the first value range;

the second value range is different from the first value range, with the second value range having at least some overlap with the first value range;

the second value range is different from the first value range, by the second value range having a threshold that is different from another threshold of the first value range;

the first value range is different from the second value range, by the first value range having a threshold that is greater than another threshold of the first value range;

the first value range is different from the second value range, by the first value range having a maximum threshold that is greater than another maximum threshold of the first value range;

the first value range is different from the second value range, by the first value range having a minimum threshold that is greater than another minimum threshold of the first value range;

the second value range is different from the first value range, only by the second value range having a threshold that is different from another threshold of the first value range;

the first value range is different from the second value range, only by the first value range having a threshold that is greater than another threshold of the first value range;

the first value range is different from the second value range, only by the first value range having a maximum threshold that is greater than another maximum threshold of the first value range;

the first value range is different from the second value range, only by the first value range having a minimum threshold that is greater than another minimum threshold of the first value range;

the second criterion and the third criterion relate to a gesture pressure;

the second criterion and the third criterion do not relate to a gesture pressure;

the second criterion and the third criterion relate to a gesture duration;

the second criterion and the third criterion relate to a gesture length;

the second criterion and the third criterion are based on a gesture duration;

the second criterion and the third criterion are based on a gesture length;

the second criterion and the third criterion are based on only a gesture duration;

the second criterion and the third criterion are based on only a gesture length;

the second criterion and the third criterion are based on a gesture duration and a gesture length;

the first directional condition requires a first direction of movement in order for the first one or more criteria to be met;

the first directional condition requires a first direction of movement of any portion of the input in order for the first one or more criteria to be met;

the first directional condition requires a first direction of movement of an entirety of the input in order for the first one or more criteria to be met;

the second directional condition requires a second direction of movement in order for the second one or more criteria to be met;

the home screen user interface is displayed in response to detecting only the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface by the first contact;

the home screen user interface is displayed in response to detecting the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface by the first contact, without requiring detection of the following movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

the second user interface of the second application is displayed in response to detecting only the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface by the first contact;

the second user interface of the second application is displayed in response to detecting the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface by the first contact, without necessarily requiring detection of the following movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

the first movement of the first contact includes movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface, followed by movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface, only in accordance with the determination that the input meets last-application-display criteria;

only the determination that the input meets last-application-display criteria is accompanied by the first movement of the first contact including movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface, followed by movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

the representation of the first user interface of the first application is moved to the first updated position only in accordance with the determination that the input meets last-application-display criteria;

the representation of the first user interface of the first application includes a window of the first user interface of the first application;

the representation of the first user interface of the first application includes a copy of the first user interface of the first application;

the representation of the first user interface of the first application is the first user interface of the first application;

the representation of the first user interface of the first application is identical to the first user interface of the first application;

the representation of the first user interface of the first application includes at least a portion of the first user interface of the first application;

the representation of the first user interface of the first application includes only a portion of the first user interface of the first application;

the representation of the first user interface of the first application includes an entirety of the first user interface of the first application;

the second directional condition requires a second direction of movement of any portion of the input in order for the second one or more criteria to be met;

the second directional condition requires a second direction of movement of an entirety of the input in order for the second one or more criteria to be met;

the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface includes linear movement;

the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface does not include linear movement;

the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface includes vertical movement;

the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface does not include vertical movement;

the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface is in a direction that is opposite of a direction of the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface includes vertical movement;

the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface is in a direction that is not opposite of a direction of the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface includes vertical movement;

the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface is along a line that intersects another line along which the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria, includes replacing the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display with the displaying the second user interface of the second application;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria, includes switching the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display with the displaying the second user interface of the second application;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria, includes fading between the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display and the displaying the second user interface of the second application;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria, includes fading out the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display and fading in the displaying the second user interface of the second application;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria, includes moving out the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display and moving in the second user interface of the second application;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria, starts before the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the home screen user interface, starts before the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria, starts during the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the home screen user interface, starts during the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria, coincides with the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the home screen user interface, coincides with the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria, starts before the movement of the first contact reaches the second location;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application, includes movement of the representation of the first user interface of the first application in accordance with the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface, before a completion of the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the home screen user interface, includes movement of the representation of the first user interface of the first application in accordance with the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface, before a completion of the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the home screen user interface;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application, includes movement of the representation of the first user interface of the first application based on the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface, before a completion of the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the home screen user interface, includes movement of the representation of the first user interface of the first application based on the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface, before a completion of the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the home screen user interface;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application, includes movement of the representation of the first user interface of the first application based on the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface, before a completion of the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application, where the completion is conditioned on the first movement of the first contact ending at a threshold distance from the first location;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the home screen user interface, includes movement of the representation of the first user interface of the first application based on the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface, before a completion of the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the home screen user interface, where the completion is conditioned on the first movement of the first contact ending at a threshold distance from the first location;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application, temporarily reverses during the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface, before a completion of the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application, where the completion is conditioned on the first movement of the first contact ending at a threshold distance from the first location;

the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the home screen user interface, temporarily reverses during the movement of the first contact away from the second location across the touch-sensitive surface, before a completion of the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the home screen user interface;

the moving the representation of the first user interface continues during the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application;

the moving the representation of the first user interface does not continue during the transitioning from the displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application at the first updated position on the display to the displaying the second user interface of the second application;

the second location is at a different position, based on the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria, as compared to the determination that the input meets the home-display criteria; or

the first updated location is at a different position, based on the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria, as compared to the determination that the input meets the home-display criteria.

8. The method of claim 4 , wherein: the application-switcher-display criteria include a criterion that is met when lateral movement and vertical movement of the first contact during the first movement meet a first requirement; and the last-application-display criteria include a criterion that is met when the lateral movement and the vertical movement of the first contact during the first movement meet a second requirement that is different from the first requirement.

The method of claim 4 , including: before displaying the application-switcher user interface, displaying the first application view in accordance with a determination that the first movement meets the second directional condition; and moving the first application view in accordance with movement of the first movement of the first contact.

The method of claim 9 , wherein: the application-switcher-display criteria include a criterion that is met when a predefined projected position of the first application view after lift-off of the first contact is in a first predefined region of the display; and the last-application-display criteria include a criterion that is met when the predefined projected position of the first application view after lift-off of the first contact is in a second predefined region of the display that is distinct from the first predefined region.

11. The method of claim 10 , including: in response to detecting the input by the first contact: in accordance with a determination that the input meets control-panel-display criteria, wherein the control-panel-display criteria include a criterion that is met when the first movement meets a third directional condition that is different from the first directional condition and the second directional condition in order for the third directional condition to be met, displaying a control panel user interface that includes a plurality of controls that correspond to a plurality of system functions of the device.

The method of claim 1 , including: while displaying the second user interface of the second application in response to detecting the input by the first contact, detecting a second input by a second contact, including detecting the second contact on the touch-sensitive surface, detecting second movement of the second contact across the touch-sensitive surface, and detecting liftoff of the second contact at an end of the second movement; and in response to detecting the second input: in accordance with a determination that the second input meets the last-application-display criteria, redisplaying the first user interface or displaying a third user interface of a third application that is distinct from the first application and the second application.

The method of claim 1 , including: in response to detecting the first movement by the first contact: concurrently displaying at least a portion of the first user interface and a portion of the second user interface in a first display layer during at least a portion of the first movement of the first contact; and displaying the home screen user interface in a second display layer that is below the first display layer.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

in response to detecting the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface:

displaying a representation of the first user interface that is smaller than the first user interface; and

displaying a representation of the home screen behind the representation of the first user interface on the display.

15. A method, comprising:

at an electronic device having a display and a touch-sensitive surface:

displaying a first user interface of a first application on the display;

in response to detecting the input by the first contact:

wherein:

the method includes, in response to detecting the input by the first contact, resizing a representation of the first user interface of the first application to a first updated size on the display in accordance with the movement of the first contact from the first location to the second location across the touch-sensitive surface;

displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria includes transitioning from displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application with the first updated size on the display to displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria; and

displaying the home screen user interface in accordance with the determination that the input meets the home-display criteria includes transitioning from displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application with the first updated size on the display to displaying the home screen user interface in accordance with the determination that the input meets the home-display criteria.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein:

transitioning from displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application with the first updated size on the display to displaying the second user interface of the second application includes displaying a first animated transition between displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application with the first updated size on the display to displaying the second user interface of the second application in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last-application-display criteria; and

transitioning from displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application with the first updated size on the display to displaying the home screen user interface includes displaying a second animated transition between displaying the representation of the first user interface of the first application with the first updated size on the display to displaying the home screen user interface in accordance with the determination that the input meets the last application-display criteria.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the first contact is detected within a predefined edge region of the touch-sensitive surface, and an initial portion of the first movement includes movement in a vertical direction and movement in a horizontal direction relative to a predefined edge of the touch-sensitive surface.

The method of claim 15 , including: in response to detecting the input by the first contact: in accordance with a determination that the input meets application-switcher-display criteria that are distinct from the home-display criteria and the last-application-display criteria, wherein the application-switcher-display criteria require that the first movement meets the second directional condition in order for the application-switcher-display criteria to be met, displaying an application-switcher user interface that includes a first application view that corresponds to the first user interface of the first application and a second application view that corresponds to a second user interface of a second application that is different from the first application.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the application-switcher-display criteria include a first criterion that is met when the first movement includes a predefined pause and the first contact makes less than a first threshold amount of movement after the predefined pause.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein: the application-switcher-display criteria include a second criterion that is met when a predefined movement parameter of the first movement is in a first value range; and the home-display criteria include a third criterion that is met when the predefined movement parameter of the first movement is in a second value range that is different from the first value range.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein at least one of:
