Abstract

A wireless power system for powering a television includes a source resonator, configured to generate an oscillating magnetic field, and at least one television component attached to at least one device resonator, wherein the at least one device resonator is configured to wirelessly receive power from the source resonator via the oscillating magnetic field when the distance between the source resonator and the at least one device resonator is more than 5 cm, and wherein at least one television component draws at least 10 Watts of power.

Claims (22)

1. A wireless power transmission system enabling bidirectional energy flow, the system comprising:

a device resonator mounted to a vehicle, the device resonator capable of (i) receiving first power wirelessly from a first source resonator of a first source via a first electromagnetic field generated by the first source resonator to provide the first power to an energy storage device of the vehicle and (ii) transferring second power wirelessly to a second source resonator via a second electromagnetic field generated by the device resonator to provide the second power to a second source; and

power and control circuitry coupled to the device resonator to control a direction of flow of the first power or the second power, including a first direction of flow via the first electromagnetic field during a first time period and a second direction of flow via the second electromagnetic field during a second time period, the power and control circuitry comprising a processor configured to monitor a state of the power and control circuitry corresponding to the direction of flow.

2. The system of claim 1 further comprising a user interface coupled to the power and control circuitry and configured to report information based on the monitored state of the power and control circuitry.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein the information reported comprises position information of the device resonator relative to the first source resonator or the second source resonator.

4. The system of claim 2 wherein the information reported is designed to help a human operator properly position the vehicle for wireless power transmission.

5. The system of claim 2 wherein the information reported is an audio or visual indication that the vehicle is positioned for wireless power transmission.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the power and control circuitry comprises measurement circuitry to measure a magnitude and/or phase of voltage signals associated with the device resonator.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the power and control circuitry comprises measurement circuitry to measure a magnitude and/or phase of current signals associated with the device resonator.

8. The system of claim 1 further comprising wireless communication circuitry to exchange control signals received from the power and control circuitry to control the direction of flow between the first source or the second source and the vehicle.

9. The system of claim 1 further comprising wireless communication circuitry configured to provide authentication capability to confirm that the first source resonator or the second source resonator and the device resonator are compatible with one another for bidirectional energy flow.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the first electromagnetic field provides a power of at least 3 kW.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the second electromagnetic field provides a power of at least 3 kW.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the device resonator is a capacitively-loaded inductor loop resonator.

13. The system of claim 12 wherein the device resonator has an intrinsic quality factor Q greater than 100.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein the first time period is at night when the electric grid is underutilized and the second time period is during episodes of peak demand occurring during the day.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein the vehicle is an autonomous vehicle.

16. The system of claim 1 wherein the vehicle is a drone.

17. The system of claim 1 wherein the second source is connected to a power grid.

18. The system of claim 1 wherein the second source includes an energy storage unit.

19. The system of claim 1 wherein the first source resonator and the second source resonator are the same resonator.

20. The system of claim 1 wherein the vehicle is located at first location while receiving the first power wirelessly and the vehicle is located at second location while transferring the second power wirelessly.
