Abstract

An antenna system that includes a plurality of lens sets. Each lens set includes a lens and at least one feed element. At least one feed element is aligned with the lens and configured to direct a signal through the lens at a desired direction.

Claims (34)

1. An antenna system forming a phased array, comprising:

a plurality of lens sets positioned in a two-dimensional array, each lens set having:

a gradient index lens with a curved front surface and opposing rear flat surface, the gradient index lens having a nominal focal point;

a plurality of patch feed elements positioned in a two-dimensional arrangement and that are mechanically fixed in a plane underneath and adjacent to the rear flat surface of the gradient index lens and configured to transmit or receive a signal through the gradient index lens; and

lens set circuitry coupled to the plurality of patch feed elements and configured to select a specific patch feed element of the plurality of patch feed elements of the lens set; and

antenna circuitry coupled to the plurality of lens sets and configured to perform fine control of beam direction of a beam of the antenna system by combining signals associated with patch feed elements in different lens sets of the plurality of lens sets.

2. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the antenna circuitry comprises a plurality of phase shifters.

3. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the antenna circuitry comprises a plurality of time delay components.

4. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of patch feed elements of the plurality of lens sets are interconnected to form the phased array.

5. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the antenna system is configured to produce multiple simultaneous beams in various directions.

6. An antenna system comprising:

a two-dimensional array of a plurality of lens sets, wherein at least three lens sets of the plurality of lens sets each includes:

a gradient index lens having a nominal focal point, a curved surface, and a flat surface opposite the curved surface and arranged at a rear of the gradient index lens;

a plurality of mechanically-fixed patch feed elements aligned with the gradient index lens proximate the flat surface, positioned across two dimensions, and configured to direct a signal through the gradient index lens at a desired direction;

lens circuitry coupled to the plurality of mechanically-fixed patch feed elements and configured to provide coarse control of beam direction for a beam of the antenna system; and

antenna circuitry configured to provide fine control of the beam direction of the beam, wherein the lens circuitry is coupled between the gradient index lens and the antenna circuitry.

7. The antenna system of claim 6 , wherein the lens circuitry comprises a feed-select switch.

8. The antenna system of claim 7 , wherein the antenna circuitry comprises a phase shifter.

9. The antenna system of claim 8 , where the antenna circuitry further comprises a summer/divider such that the phase shifter is electrically between the lens circuitry and the summer/divider.

10. The antenna system of claim 9 , wherein the antenna circuitry comprises a plurality of phase shifters including one or more respective phase shifters for each lens set, the plurality of phase shifters including the phase shifter.

11. The antenna system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of phase shifters include respective phase shifters for each patch feed element of the plurality of mechanically-fixed patch feed elements.

12. The antenna system of claim 11 , wherein the lens circuitry comprises polarization tilt circuitry.

13. The antenna system of claim 12 , where the lens circuitry comprise a diplexer coupled to the polarization tilt circuitry.

14. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the lens circuitry comprises a diplexer.

15. The antenna system of claim 14 , wherein the lens circuitry comprises polarization tilt circuitry.

16. The antenna system of claim 15 , wherein the lens circuitry comprises a feed-select switch.

17. The antenna system of claim 16 , wherein the lens circuitry further comprises a power amplifier coupled to the feed-select switch, and wherein the diplexer, polarization tilt circuitry, power amplifier, and feed-select switch are coupled together in a signal path.

18. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the lens circuitry comprises polarization tilt circuitry coupled to an amplifier.

19. An antenna system comprising:

a plurality of lenses each having a nominal focal point;

a plurality of feed elements each aligned with a respective one of said plurality of lenses and configured to transmit/receive a signal through said respective one of said plurality of lenses at a desired direction; and

a selector connected to each of said plurality of feed elements of said plurality of lens sets to dynamically select a subset of said plurality of feed elements to transmit/receive the signal through said plurality of lenses;

wherein said plurality of lenses are immediately adjacent to each other;

where each of said plurality of lenses each have a tile-like shape with one or more sides, wherein the plurality of lens elements form a tiling configuration which improves the antenna radiation pattern over a wide field of regard and/or frequency range.
