Abstract

An apparatus that supports a user in a variety of positions to comfortably perform tasks, such as applying one or more tattoos to skin of a subject is herein disclosed. The apparatus can be reconfigured to optimally position and support the arms and/or chest of the user. A method for using a stool can involve rotating armrests of the apparatus from a stowed position to a deployed position. The armrests can support the user's forearms while supporting the user's chest such that the user can comfortably perform tasks in front of a chest support of the stool.

Claims (33)

1. A support assembly, comprising:

a chest support configured to contact a user's chest during use; and

an armrest assembly including

an armrest movable away from the chest support and the user's chest when the armrest rotates from a raised chest-support position to a lowered horizontal position for supporting the user's arm, and

an extension mechanism movable between an undeployed state in which the armrest is positioned within an armrest-receiving portion of the chest support and a deployed state in which the armrest is positioned outside of the armrest-receiving portion.

The support assembly of claim 1 , wherein the armrest assembly includes an arm positioner having an unlocked state for allowing rotation of the armrest relative to the chest support and about an axis of rotation and a locked state for preventing rotation of the armrest relative to the chest support.

3. The support assembly of claim 1 , wherein the armrest is movable between a plurality of preset angular positions relative to the chest support.

The support assembly of claim 1 , wherein the chest support is rotatable between an upright orientation and an inclined position while the support assembly rests on a horizontal support surface, wherein the chest support is configured to expand when in the upright orientation or the inclined position.

5. The support assembly of claim 1 , wherein the armrest has a forearm support and a base, wherein the armrest is expandable to move the forearm support away from the base.

6. The support assembly of claim 1 , wherein the armrest is configured to be locked against the chest support when received by the chest support.

7. The support assembly of claim 1 , wherein the extension mechanism in an unlocked state allows the armrest to move laterally away from the chest support.

8. The support assembly of claim 1 , wherein the extension mechanism includes:

a holder coupled to the chest support and operable to switch the extension mechanism between a locked state and an unlocked state; and

a rod slidably positionable in a passageway of the holder to allow translation of the armrest.

9. The support assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a pivoting mechanism having an unlocked state for allowing rotation of the chest support and a locked state for preventing rotation of the chest support.

The support assembly of claim 1 , wherein the armrest, when the extension mechanism is in the deployed state, extends away from the user's torso when the user's chest contacts the backside of the chest support, and wherein the at least one armrest, when the extension mechanism is in the deployed state, is positioned to contact the user's chest resting against the chest support.

11. The support assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an elongate member coupled to the chest support and the armrest assembly slidably mounted to the elongate member to allow translation of the armrest.

12. A support assembly, comprising:

a padded chest support configured to contact a user's chest; and

an armrest assembly including

an armrest,

an extension mechanism reconfigurable to position the armrest within an armrest-receiving portion of the chest support and to position the armrest outside of the armrest-receiving portion, and

a manually-operated armrest positioner assembly coupled to the extension mechanism, wherein the armrest positioner assembly in an unlocked state allows the armrest to rotate from a raised chest-support position for supporting a user's chest to a lowered horizontal position for supporting the user's horizontally-positioned arm, wherein the armrest positioner assembly in a locked state prevents rotation of the armrest relative to the chest support.

13. The support assembly of claim 12 , wherein the armrest is configured to expand when positioned outside of the the armrest-receiving portion.

14. The support assembly of claim 12 , wherein the manually-operated armrest positioner assembly includes a biasing member that biases the armrest positioner assembly toward the locked state.

15. The support assembly of claim 12 , wherein the armrest positioner assembly allows the user to pull the armrest outwardly away from the padded chest support to move the armrest positioner assembly to the unlocked state.

16. A support assembly, comprising:

a padded chest support including an armrest-receiving portion, the padded chest support is configured to contact a user's chest; and

an armrest assembly including:

an armrest,

an extension mechanism operable to position the armrest within the armrest-receiving portion and to allow the armrest to be moved away from the armrest-receiving portion, and

an armrest positioner assembly configured to allow the armrest to rotate relative to the padded chest support.

The support assembly of claim 16 , wherein the armrest positioner assembly has an unlocked state in which the armrest is allowed to rotate from a raised chest-support position for supporting the user's chest to a lowered position for supporting the user's horizontally-positioned arm, wherein the armrest positioner assembly has a locked state in which the armrest is rotationally fixed relative to the chest support.
