Abstract

Systems and techniques are described that enable users to interact and share content through a social network application and/or service with other users. A social networking system may determine that a first application and a second application are installed on a device and are both useable to share content between a first account and one or more contact accounts. The social networking system may receive content associated with the first application and the second application and may generate a notification associated with the content. The social networking system may determine which of the first application or the second application to use to present the notification, and may output the notification to the determined first application and/or the second application.

determining whether the first application is displaying a conversation associated with content;

when the first application is in the foreground and displaying the conversation associated with the content, displaying the content in the conversation and refraining from displaying the notification in the first application and second application; and

when the first application is in the foreground and not displaying the conversation associated with the content, delivering the notification to the first application and refraining from displaying the notification in the second application.

3. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the determining which of the first application or the second application to use to present the notification comprises:

determining that the first application is not in a foreground of the device;

determining whether the second application is in the foreground of the device;

when the second application is determined to not be in the foreground, delivering the notification to the second application, and refraining from displaying the notification in the first application;

when the second application is determined to be in the foreground, determining whether the second application is displaying a conversation associated with content;

when the second application is determined to be in the foreground and displaying the conversation associated with the content, displaying the content in the conversation and refraining from displaying the notification in the first application and second application; and

when the second application is determined to be in the foreground and not displaying the conversation associated with the content, delivering the notification to the second application and refraining from displaying the notification in the first application.

4. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the determining which of the first application or the second application to use to present the notification includes at least one of:

selecting the second application when the content is associated with a first contact account of the one or more contact accounts, the first contact account being associated with a designated list of contact accounts, and

selecting the first application when the content is associated with a second contact account of the one or more contact accounts, the second contact account not being associated with the designated list of contact accounts.

5. The computing system of claim 4 , wherein the determining which of the first application or the second application to use to present the notification includes:

determining the first application is in a foreground of the device; and

delivering the notification to the first application and refraining from displaying the notification in the second application.

6. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the determining which of the first application or the second application to use to present the notification is done at the device.

7. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the notification comprises at least one of a banner notification, a lock screen notification, a badge count notification, or a notification center notification.

8. A method comprising:

determining that a first application and a second application are installed on a device and are both useable to share content between a first account and one or more contact accounts;

receiving content associated with an account of the one or more contact accounts and associated with the first application and the second application;

generating a notification associated with the content;

determining which of the first application or the second application to use to present the notification; and

outputting the notification to the determined first application or the second application.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the determining which of the first application or the second application to use to present the notification comprises:

determining that the first application is in a foreground of the device;

determining whether the first application is displaying a conversation associated with content;

when the first application is in the foreground and displaying the conversation associated with the content, displaying the content in the conversation and refraining from displaying the notification in the first application and second application; and

when the first application is in the foreground and not displaying the conversation associated with the content, delivering the notification to the first application and refraining from displaying the notification in the second application.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the determining which of the first application or the second application to use to present the notification comprises:

determining that the first application is not in a foreground of the device;

determining whether the second application is in the foreground of the device;

when the second application is determined to not be in the foreground, delivering the notification to the second application, and refraining from displaying the notification in the first application;

when the second application is determined to be in the foreground, determining whether the second application is displaying a conversation associated with content;

when the second application is determined to be in the foreground and displaying the conversation associated with the content, displaying the content in the conversation and refraining from displaying the notification in the first application and second application; and

when the second application is determined to be in the foreground and not displaying the conversation associated with the content, delivering the notification to the second application and refraining from displaying the notification in the first application.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the determining which of the first application or the second application to use to present the notification includes at least one of:

selecting the second application when the content is associated with a first contact account of the one or more contact accounts, the first contact account being associated with a designated list of contact accounts, and

selecting the first application when the content is associated with a second contact account of the one or more contact accounts, the second contact account not being associated with the designated list of contact accounts.
