Abstract

A vehicle control system executing a voice control system for facilitating voice-based dialog with a driver to enable the driver or autonomous vehicle to control certain operational aspects of an autonomous vehicle is provided. Using environmental and sensor input, the vehicle control system can select optimal routes for operating the vehicle in an autonomous mode or choose a preferred operational mode. Occupants of the autonomous vehicle can change a destination, route or driving mode by engaging with the vehicle control system in a dialog enabled by the voice control system.

Claims (14)

1. A method comprising: receiving a voice command from a driver, the voice command comprising speech utterances questioning whether a vehicle can operate in an autonomous mode; identifying, by a vehicle control system, possible routes to a destination; evaluating the possible routes to identify at least one route along which the vehicle can operate in the autonomous mode; informing, by a voice control system, the driver of the at least one route; and instructing, in response to a second voice command, the vehicle to operate in autonomous mode along the at least one route.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identification of possible routes to a destination further comprises querying a geo-location application for a list of travel routes.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein informing the driver of the at least one route further comprises informing the driver of two possible routes.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising the steps of: receiving a third voice command from the driver, the third voice command comprising speech utterances indicating a selection of one of the two possible routes.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein instructing the vehicle to operate in autonomous mode further comprises instructing the vehicle to operate in the autonomous mode along the selected route.

6. A vehicle comprising: a vehicle control system controlling operation of the vehicle and a voice control system executing within the vehicle control system, the voice control system being configured

to receive a first voice command from a driver, the first voice command comprising a speech utterance questioning whether a vehicle can operate in an autonomous mode;

to cause the vehicle control system to identify possible routes to a destination and to evaluate the possible routes to identify at least one route along which the vehicle can operate in the autonomous mode;

to inform the driver of the at least one route; and

in response to a second voice command, to instruct the vehicle to operate in autonomous mode along the at least one route.

7. The vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the vehicle control system is configured to identify the possible routes to the destination by querying a geo-location application for a list of travel routes.

8. The vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the voice control system is configured to inform the driver of at least one additional route along which the vehicle can operate in the autonomous mode in addition to the at least one route.

9. The vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the voice control system is configured to receive a third voice command from the driver, the third voice command comprising a speech utterance indicating a selection of one of the routes along which the vehicle can operate in the autonomous mode.

10. The vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the voice control system is further configured to instruct the vehicle to operate in autonomous mode along the selected route in response to the third voice command.
