Abstract

A cutting guide having a seam allowance recess and methods of cutting a piece of material with such cutting guide.

Claims (33)

1. A cutting guide, comprising:

a substantially rectangular body having a top surface disposed in opposed relation to a substantially flat bottom surface, said top surface and said bottom surface extending to each of a plurality of sides of said substantially rectangular body, said substantially rectangular body having a thickness sufficient to guide a cutting tool along one of a plurality of sides of said body; a first recess and a second recess disposed in said bottom surface of said body, said first recess and said second recess each having a pair of opposed sides joined by a cross member,

wherein said first recess defining a first passage intersecting one of a first pair of diagonally opposed corners of said substantially rectangular body;

wherein said second recess defining a second passage intersecting one of a second pair of diagonally opposed corners of said substantially rectangular body; and

wherein said first recess defining said first passage intersects said second recess defining said second passage.

2. The cutting guide of claim 1 , wherein one of said pair of opposed sides of said first recess intersecting one of said first pair of diagonally opposed corners.

3. The cutting guide of claim 2 , wherein one of said pair of opposed sides of said second recess intersecting one of said second pair of diagonally opposed corners.

4. The cutting guide of claim 3 , wherein said opposed sides of said first recess and said second recess comprise substantially linear parallel opposed sides.

5. The cutting guide of claim 4 , wherein said first and second recesses have dimensions sufficient to receive a seam allowance of a pair of materials joined at a seam with said bottom surface of said substantially rectangular body engaged with said pair of materials on either side of said seam allowance.

6. The cutting guide of claim 5 , further comprising viewable indicia disposed on said bottom surface or said top surface.

7. A method of making a cutting guide, comprising:

providing a substantially rectangular body having a top surface disposed in opposed relation to a substantially flat bottom surface, said top surface and said bottom surface extending to each of a plurality of sides of said substantially rectangular body, said substantially rectangular body having a thickness sufficient to guide a cutting tool along one of a plurality of sides of said body;

disposing a first recess and a second recess in said bottom surface of said body, said first recess and said second recess each having a pair of opposed sides joined by a cross member,

wherein said first recess defining a first passage intersecting one of a first pair of diagonally opposed corners of said substantially rectangular body;

wherein said second recess defining a second passage intersecting one of a second pair of diagonally opposed corners of said substantially rectangular body; and

wherein said first recess defining said first passage intersects said second recess defining said second passage.

8. The method of making a cutting guide of claim 7 , further comprising intersecting one of said pair of opposed sides of said first recess with one of said first pair of diagonally opposed corners.

9. The method of making a cutting guide of claim 8 , further comprising intersecting one of said pair of opposed sides of said second recess with one of said second pair of diagonally opposed corners.

10. The method of making a cutting guide of claim 9 , further comprising disposing said opposed sides of said first recess and said second recess in substantially linear parallel opposed sides.

11. The method of making a cutting guide of claim 10 , further comprising configuring said first and second recesses to receive a seam allowance of a pair of materials joined at a seam with said bottom surface of said substantially rectangular body engaged with said pair of materials on either side of said seam allowance.

12. The method of making a cutting guide of claim 11 , further comprising disposing viewable indicia on said bottom surface or said top surface.

13. A method of cutting a piece of material, comprising:

obtaining a piece of material, said piece of material including a first piece of material different from a second piece of material joined at a seam having a seam allowance with a width which extends between said seam and an edge of each of said first piece of material and said second piece of material;

obtaining a cutting guide, including:

a substantially rectangular body having a top surface disposed in opposed relation to a substantially flat bottom surface, said top surface and said bottom surface extending to each of a plurality of sides of said substantially rectangular body, said substantially rectangular body having a thickness sufficient to guide a cutting tool along one of a plurality of sides of said body;

a first recess and a second recess disposed in said bottom surface of said body, said first recess and said second recess each having a pair of opposed sides joined by a cross member,

wherein said first recess defining a first passage intersecting one of a first pair of diagonally opposed corners of said substantially rectangular body;

wherein said second recess defining a second passage intersecting one of a second pair of diagonally opposed corners of said substantially rectangular body; and

wherein said first recess defining said first passage intersects said second recess defining said second passage;

directly engaging said bottom surface of said cutting guide with said first and second pieces of material to locate said seam and said width of said seam allowance entirely between said pair of opposed sides of said first recess and second recess, said first and second pieces of material extending beyond said plurality of sides of said body of said cutting guide;

abutting said seam against one said opposed sides of said first and second recess;

guiding a cutting tool along each of said plurality of sides of said cutting guide; and

cutting said piece of material with said cutting tool guided along each of said plurality of sides of said cutting guide.
