Abstract

One variation of a method for producing a smart yarn includes: aligning a set of sensing elements offset along a lateral axis in a magazine, wherein each sensing element in the set of sensing elements includes a sensor, a first conductive lead extending from a first side of the sensor along a longitudinal axis perpendicular to the lateral axis, and a second conductive lead extending from a second side of the sensor opposite the first side and along the longitudinal axis; wrapping a set of fibers into a yarn within a wrapping field; feeding a leading end of a first sensing element, in the set of sensing elements, from the magazine into the wrapping field; releasing the first sensing element from the magazine into the wrapping field; encasing the first sensing element between the set of fibers within the yarn; and repeating this process for the set of sensing elements.

Claims (25)

1. A method for producing a smart yarn, the method comprising:

feeding a plurality of sensing elements into a wrapping field, wherein each sensing element comprises a sensor having a first sensor side coupled to a first conductive lead and a second sensor side coupled to a second conductive lead;

encasing each sensing element in the wrapping field with a set of wrapping fibers; and

indicating the location of at least one sensor in the smart yarn with a marker.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is coated in a non-conductive material.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the non-conductive material comprises epoxy.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein feeding the plurality of sensing elements comprises feeding the plurality of sensing elements in series along a longitudinal axis.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising encasing one or more packing fibers with the set of wrapping fibers.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein feeding the plurality of sensing elements comprises feeding the sensing elements into the wrapping field at intervals associated with a designated garment.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein indicating the location of at least one sensor in the smart yarn comprises indicating the location of at least one sensor on an exterior surface of the wrapping fibers.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising collecting the smart yarn on a spool.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of sensing elements comprises a temperature sensor.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of sensing elements comprises a sensor selected from the group consisting of a pressure sensor, a moisture sensor, an ambient light sensor, and an accelerometer.

11. A smart yarn, comprising:

a plurality of sensing elements, wherein each sensing element comprises a sensor having a first sensor side coupled to a first conductive lead and a second sensor side coupled to a second conductive lead,

a set of wrapping fibers encasing each sensing element; and

at least one marker indicating location of at least one sensor in the smart yarn.

12. The smart yarn of claim 11 , wherein the sensor is coated in a non-conductive material.

13. The smart yarn of claim 12 , wherein the non-conductive material comprises epoxy.

14. The smart yarn of claim 11 , wherein the sensing elements are arranged in series along a longitudinal axis.

15. The smart yarn of claim 14 , further comprises packing fibers encased in the set of wrapping fibers.

16. The smart yarn of claim 14 , wherein the sensing elements are separated at intervals associated with a designated garment.

17. The smart yarn of claim 11 , wherein the at least one marker is on an exterior surface of the wrapping fibers.

18. The smart yarn of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the plurality of sensing elements comprises a temperature sensor.

19. The smart yarn of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the plurality of sensing elements comprises a sensor selected from the group consisting of a pressure sensor, a moisture sensor, an ambient light sensor, and an accelerometer.
