Abstract

A fan blade includes a metallic body, a first composite cover, and a second composite cover. The metallic body may have a first side, a second side, a plurality of first retention slots, and a plurality of second retention slots, in accordance with various embodiments. The first and second retention slots may extend from the first side to the second side of the metallic body. The first composite cover may be coupled to the first side of the metallic body and may include a plurality of first fingers that extend through the first retention slots and are coupled to the second side of the metallic body. The second composite cover may be coupled to the second side of the metallic body and may include a plurality of second fingers that extend through the second retention slots and are coupled to the first side of the metallic body.

Claims (16)

1. A gas turbine engine comprising a fan section comprising a plurality of fan blades, wherein:

a fan blade of the plurality of fan blades comprises a metallic body defining a plurality of retention slots and a composite cover coupled to the metallic body via the plurality of retention slots,

the plurality of retention slots extend completely through the metallic body,

the composite cover comprises a plurality of fingers that extend through the plurality of retention slots,

a first finger of the plurality of fingers extends through a first retention slot of the plurality of retention slots from a suction side to a pressure side,

the first finger is coupled to, and engages with, the pressure side of the metallic body,

a second finger of the plurality of fingers extends through a second retention slot of the plurality of retention slots from the pressure side to the suction side, and

the second finger is coupled to, and engages with, the suction side of the metallic body.

2. The gas turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein:

the pressure side is a concave side and the suction side is a convex side;

the composite cover comprises a concave composite cover and a convex composite cover;

the concave composite cover is coupled to the concave side of the metallic body; and

the convex composite cover is coupled to the convex side of the metallic body.

3. The gas turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the fan section comprises a guide vane strut extending between a fan section casing and a central longitudinal core of the gas turbine engine, wherein the guide vane strut comprises a second metallic body having a second plurality of retention slots and second composite covers coupled to the second metallic body via the second plurality of retention slots.

4. The gas turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the metallic body of the fan blade is made from titanium.

5. The gas turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the composite cover of the fan blade is made from a graphite epoxy material.
