Abstract

The present invention relates to a below grade, blind side, dual waterproofing membrane assembly incorporating a secondary membrane comprising of a bentonite sheet waterproofing layer, and a primary membrane comprising of a sheet membrane having an adhesive to fully bond to a concrete/shotcrete. The invention encompasses a dual layer or dual membrane system that acts as a barrier, and prevents, and blocks water and moisture, from passing from one side of the structure to the other side. The dual barrier layer system can be used along a wall, a floor, a ceiling, or along any structure which requires water or moisture proofing. The invention can be used between a concrete or shotcrete layer and the surrounding earth, such as, along an area that has a high water table, or a constant hydrostatic pressure, or high ground moisture, that may creep into a foundation or a wall.

Claims (33)

1. A dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure, comprising:

(a) at least one soil retention system having a first face and a second face, and wherein said first face faces compacted earth or soil;

(b) at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer having a first face and a second face, and wherein at least a portion of said first face of said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer is secured to at least a portion of said second face of said at least one soil retention system, and said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer is composed of a layer of a first material;

(c) at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer having a first face and a second face, said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer is composed of a layer of a second material, and wherein said second face of said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer has at least one layer of at least one adhesive, and wherein at least a portion of said first face of said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer is secured to at least a portion of said second face of said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer, so as to form said dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure; and

(d) wherein said first material is different than said second material.

2. The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein said structure is selected from a group consisting of a wall, a foundation, a blind wall, an interior wall, an exterior wall, a foundation slab, a ceiling, and combinations thereof.

The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein said at least one soil retention system is selected from a group consisting of a drain board, a foam, a compacted earth layer, a metallic structure, a wooden structure, a plastic structure, a composite structure, and combinations thereof.

4. The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer is one of a liquid sheet membrane layer which becomes a solid sheet membrane layer upon curing, and a solid sheet membrane layer.

5. The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein a first edge of said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer is attached to a second edge of at least one second waterproof sheet membrane layer.

6. The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein a first edge of said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer is attached to a second edge of at least one second bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer.

The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein at least one layer of concrete or shotcrete having a first face and a second face is applied, such that at least a portion of said first face of said at least one layer of concrete or shotcrete is secured to at least a portion of said at least one layer of at least one adhesive.

8. The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein the thickness of said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer is between about 0.5 mm to about 2.5 mm.

9. The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer has a range of bentonite mass per unit area of between about 0.5 pound of bentonite per sqft. to about 2.0 pound of bentonite per sqft.

The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein at least one securing means is used to secure one of said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer and said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer to at least a portion of said at least one soil retention system.

The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein at least one securing means is used to secure one of said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer and said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer to at least a portion of said at least one soil retention system, and wherein said at least one securing means is selected from a group consisting of an anchor, a screw, a nail, an adhesive, a bolt, and combinations thereof.

The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein said at least one soil retention system, is selected from a group consisting of a lagging retention system, a soil retention system, a cement retention system, a shotcrete retention system, a concrete retention system, a shotcrete thin temporary wall retention system, a concrete thin temporary walls retention system, a plywood retention systems, and a pylon retention system, and combinations thereof.

13. The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein at least one polymer liner is secured to one of said first face and said second face of said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer.

The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein at least one polymer liner is secured to one of said first face and said second face of said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer, and wherein said at least one polymer liner has a thickness of between about 8 mils, and about 10 mils.

15. The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer, has one of at least one polymer, and at least one additive.

16. The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer comprises of granules of bentonite and contained inside a pouch.

17. The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 1 , wherein bentonite in said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer expands upon contact with water.

18. A dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure, comprising:

(a) at least one soil retention system having a first face and a second face, and wherein said first face faces compacted earth or soil;

(b) at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer having a first face and a second face, and wherein at least a portion of said first face of said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer is secured to at least a portion of said second face of said at least one soil retention system, and said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer is composed of a layer of a first material;

(c) at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer having a first face and a second face, said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer is composed of a layer of a second material, and wherein said second face of said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer has at least one layer of at least one adhesive, and wherein at least a portion of said first face of said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer is secured to at least a portion of said second face of said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer;

(d) at least one layer of concrete or shotcrete having a first face and a second face, and wherein at least a portion of said first face of said at least one layer of concrete or shotcrete is secured to at least a portion of said at least one layer of at least one adhesive, so as to form said dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure; and

(e) wherein said first material is different than said second material.

19. A method of providing a dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure, comprising the steps of:

(a) forming at least one soil retention system having a first face and a second face, and wherein said first face faces compacted earth or soil;

(b) securing at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer membrane having a first face and a second face, to at least a portion of said at least one soil retention system, such that said first face of said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer is secured to at least a portion for said second face of said at least one soil retention system, and said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer is composed of a layer of a first material;

(c) securing a layer of a second material composed of at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer having a first face and a second face, and having at least one layer of at least one adhesive on said second face of said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer, to at least a portion of said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer, such that said first face of said at least one waterproof sheet membrane layer is secured to at least a portion of said second face of said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer, so as to form said dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure; and

(d) wherein said first material is different than said second material.

20. The dual waterproofing membrane assembly system for a structure of claim 18 , wherein said at least one bentonite sheet waterproofing membrane layer comprises of granules of bentonite and are contained inside a pouch.
