Abstract

A system, method and apparatus for remote control of a thermostat by a network-based server, when the thermostat is not connected to a local or wide-area network. A network-based server calculates a modified temperature profile for a thermostat based on a utility's time-of-use pricing and/or weather forecasts. After the server has calculated the modified temperature profile, it is provided to a mobile device via a wide-area network, and the mobile device provides the modified temperature profile directly to the thermostat when the mobile device is within range of the thermostat.

Claims (25)

1. A method performed by a mobile device for direct communications with a thermostat that is not in communication with a local-area network, comprising:

storing in a memory of the mobile device a temperature profile;

determining when a low-power communication circuitry of the mobile device is directly coupled to a complimentary low-power communication circuitry of the thermostat; and

automatically providing via the direct coupling between the low-power communication circuitry of the mobile device and the complimentary low-power communication circuitry of the thermostat the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device when it is determined that the low-power communication circuitry of the mobile device is directly coupled to the complimentary low power communication circuitry of the thermostat.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the temperature profile defines HVAC turn-on and turn-off times and associated temperature set points for use by the thermostat.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the temperature profile is optimized based on time-of-use utility pricing.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device was received from a remote server in communication with the mobile device over a wide-area network.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device was optimized by the remote server for time-of-use utility pricing.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device was further optimized by the remote server in anticipation of predicted outdoor temperatures.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device is based on a model of the thermostat.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device was received from a remote server in communication with the mobile device over a wide-area network.

9. A mobile device for direct communications with a thermostat that is not in communication with a local-area network, comprising:

a memory for storing processor-executable instructions and a temperature profile;

a low-power communication circuitry for communicating directly with a corresponding low-power communication circuitry of the thermostat;

and

a processor coupled to the memory and the low-power communication circuitry, for execution of the processor-executable instructions that causes the mobile device to:

determine when the low-power communication circuitry of the mobile device is directly coupled to the complimentary low-power communication circuitry of the thermostat; and

automatically provide via the direct coupling between the low-power communication circuitry of the mobile device and the complimentary low-power communication circuitry of the thermostat the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device when it is determined that the low-power communication circuitry of the mobile device is directly coupled to the complimentary low power communication circuitry of the thermostat.

10. The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device defines HVAC turn-on and turn-off times and associated temperature set points for use by the thermostat.

11. The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein the the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device was optimized based on time-of-use utility pricing.

12. The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device was received from a remote server coupled to the mobile device over a wide area network.

13. The mobile device of claim 12 , wherein the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device was optimized by the remote server for time-of-use utility pricing.

14. The mobile device of claim 13 , wherein the modified temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device was further optimized by the remote server in anticipation of predicted outdoor temperatures.

15. The mobile device of claim 12 , wherein the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device is based on a model of the thermostat.

16. The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein the temperature profile stored in the memory of the mobile device is based on a model of the thermostat.
