Methods and systems for presenting windows on a mobile device using gestures

Abstract

Presenting a plurality of windows on a display of a mobile device can comprise displaying a first window on the display. The first window can be a dual-display window displayed on both a first and second display portion of the display. In response to a touch gesture, a second window can be presented on at least one of the first and second display portions. When the second window is a dual-display window, the second window can be displayed in the first and second display portions. When the second window is not a dual-display window, the second window can be displayed on one of the first and second display portions and a third window can be displayed on another one of the first and second display portions. When the third window is a dual-display window, it can be displayed on the other one of the first and second display portions.

Claims (78)

1. A method for presenting a plurality of windows on a display of a mobile device, the method comprising:

displaying a first window on the display of the mobile device, wherein the first window is a dual-display window, and wherein dual-display windows are displayed on both a first display portion and second display portion of the display of the mobile device;

receiving a first input to the mobile device, wherein the first input comprises a touch gesture;

in response to the first input, determining a second window to present on at least one of the first and second display portions;

determining whether the second window is a dual-display window;

when the second window is a dual-display window:

ceasing to display the first window on the first and second display portions; and

displaying the second window in the first and second display portions; and

when the second window is not a dual-display window:

determining a third window to present on one of the first and second display portions;

ceasing to display the first window on the first and second display portions;

displaying the second window on one of the first and second display portions; and

displaying the third window on another one of the first and second display portions, wherein, when the third window is a dual-display window, the third window is displayed in a single-display mode on only the other one of the first and second display portions.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

determining that the second window is not a dual-display window and displaying the second window on one of the first and second display portions and the third window on the other one of the first and second display portions;

receiving a second input;

determining a fourth window to present on one of the first and second display portions;

ceasing to display the second window;

moving the third window to the one of the first and second displays; and

displaying the fourth window on the other one of the first and second display portions.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first input includes a movement in a first direction and the second input includes a movement in the same first direction.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the second window to present on the at least one or the first and second display portions is based on a window stack ordering of the plurality of windows, wherein the window stack ordering is a logical arrangement of active and inactive windows.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the first input includes one of: a drag and a flick, wherein the drag includes an initial contact with a portion of the mobile device and a contact movement in one of a first direction and a second direction, wherein the flick includes the initial contact with the portion of the mobile device and a truncated contact movement in one of the first direction and the second direction, and wherein the second direction is substantially opposite of the first direction.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein there is a predetermined collection of a plurality of user input descriptions for recognizing user inputs that are interpretable in interpreting of the first input.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second display portions are on a common display device of the mobile device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first display portion is on a first display device of the mobile device and the second display portion is on a different second display device of the mobile device.

9. A mobile device comprising:

a display device having a first display portion and a second display portion;

a processor coupled with the display device; and

a memory coupled with and readable by the processor and storing therein a set of instructions which, when executed by the processor, causes the processor to present a plurality of windows on the display device by:

displaying a first window on the display of the mobile device, wherein the first window is a dual-display window, and wherein dual-display windows are displayed on both the first display portion and the second display portion of the display of the mobile device;

receiving a first input to the mobile device, wherein the first input comprises a touch gesture;

in response to the first input, determining a second window to present on at least one of the first and second display portions;

determining whether the second window is a dual-display window;

when the second window is a dual-display window:

ceasing to display the first window on the first and second display portions; and

displaying the second window in the first and second display portions; and

when the second window is not a dual-display window:

determining a third window to present on one of the first and second display portions;

ceasing to display the first window on the first and second display portions;

displaying the second window on one of the first and second display portions; and

displaying the third window on another one of the first and second display portions, wherein, when the third window is a dual-display window, the third window is displayed in a single-display mode on only the other one of the first and second display portions.

10. The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to present the plurality of windows on the display device by:

determining that the second window is not a dual-display window and displaying the second window on one of the first and second display portions and the third window on the other one of the first and second display portions;

receiving a second input;

determining a fourth window to present on one of the first and second display portions;

ceasing to display the second window;

moving the third window to the one of the first and second displays; and

displaying the fourth window on the other one of the first and second display portions.

11. The mobile device of claim 10 , wherein the first input includes a movement in a first direction and the second input includes a movement in the same first direction.

The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein determining the second window to present on the at least one or the first and second display portions is based on a window stack ordering of the plurality of windows, wherein the window stack ordering is a logical arrangement of active and inactive windows.

The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein the first input includes one of: a drag and a flick, wherein the drag includes an initial contact with a portion of the mobile device and a contact movement in one of a first direction and a second direction, wherein the flick includes the initial contact with the portion of the mobile device and a truncated contact movement in one of the first direction and the second direction, and wherein the second direction is substantially opposite of the first direction.

14. The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein there is a predetermined collection of a plurality of user input descriptions for recognizing user inputs that are interpretable in interpreting of the first input.

15. The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein the display device comprises a plurality of displays, wherein the first display portion is associated with a first display device of a plurality of display devices, wherein the second display portion is associated with a second display device of the plurality of display devices, and wherein the first display device and the second display device are joined by a hinge and are foldable.

16. A non-transitory, computer-readable medium comprising a set of instructions stored thereon which, when executed by a processor, causes the processor to present a plurality of windows on a display by:

displaying a first window on the display of a mobile device, wherein the first window is a dual-display window, and wherein dual-display windows are displayed on both a first display portion and a second display portion of the display of the mobile device;

receiving a first input to the mobile device, wherein the first input comprises a touch gesture;

in response to the first input, determining a second window to present on at least one of the first and second display portions;

determining whether the second window is a dual-display window;

when the second window is a dual-display window:

ceasing to display the first window on the first and second display portions; and

displaying the second window in the first and second display portions; and

when the second window is not a dual-display window:

determining a third window to present on one of the first and second display portions;

ceasing to display the first window on the first and second display portions;

displaying the second window on one of the first and second display portions; and

displaying the third window on another one of the first and second display portions, wherein, when the third window is a dual-display window, the third window is displayed in a single-display mode on only the other one of the first and second display portions.

17. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to present the plurality of windows on the display by:

determining that the second window is not a dual-display window and displaying the second window on one of the first and second display portions and the third window on the other one of the first and second display portions;

receiving a second input;

determining a fourth window to present on one of the first and second display portions;

ceasing to display the second window;

moving the third window to the one of the first and second displays; and

displaying the fourth window on the other one of the first and second display portions.

18. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the first input includes a movement in a first direction and the second input includes a movement in the same first direction.

The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein determining the second window to present on the at least one or the first and second display portions is based on a window stack ordering of the plurality of windows, wherein the window stack ordering is a logical arrangement of active and inactive windows.

20. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the first input includes one of: a drag and a flick, wherein the drag includes an initial contact with a portion of the mobile device and a contact movement in one of a first direction and a second direction, wherein the flick includes the initial contact with the portion of the mobile device and a truncated contact movement in one of the first direction and the second direction, and wherein the second direction is substantially opposite of the first direction.

21. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the display comprises a plurality of displays, wherein the first display portion is associated with a first display device of a plurality of display devices, wherein the second display portion is associated with a second display device of the plurality of display devices, and wherein the first display device and the second display device are joined by a hinge and are foldable.
