Abstract

A digital camera comprising a digital image sensor and at least one corrective lens element configured to reduce a blurring of an image in a horizontal or vertical dimension on the digital image sensor. The digital image sensor may be larger than a 28 millimeter diagonal.

Claims (27)

1. A lens system for use with a camera, the lens system comprising:

an anamorphic lens element configured to compress an image in a horizontal or vertical dimension; and

a corrective lens configured to be positioned along an optical axis with the anamorphic lens element, wherein the corrective lens element is configured to receive the compressed image from the anamorphic lens element and reduce a blurring of the image in the horizontal or vertical dimension.

2. The lens system of claim 1 , wherein the corrective lens element is selected from the group consisting of a toroidal lens element, a birefringement material, and combinations thereof.

3. The lens system of claim 1 , wherein the blurring of the image is on a digital image sensor.

4. The lens system of claim 3 , wherein the digital image sensor has an active imaging area with a length along a diagonal that is greater than 1.5 millimeters.

5. The lens system of claim 3 , wherein the digital image sensor has an active imaging area with a width along the horizontal or vertical dimension that is greater than 28 millimeters and a height that is greater than 14 millimeters.

6. The lens system of claim 1 , wherein the corrective lens element includes an anti-aliasing feature.

7. The lens system of claim 1 , wherein the anamorphic lens element is configured to compress the image in the horizontal or vertical dimension by a squeeze ratio between 1.25 to 1.8.

8. The lens system of claim 1 , wherein the corrective lens element includes one or both of a toroidal lens element and an anti-aliasing feature.

9. The lens system of claim 1 , wherein the anamorphic lens element is part of an anamorphic lens attachment configured to detach from the corrective lens element.

10. A camera system comprising:

an anamorphic lens element configured to compress an image in a horizontal or vertical dimension; and

a corrective lens positioned adjacent the anamorphic lens element and configured to reduce a blurring of the image in the horizontal or vertical dimension on a digital image sensor connected with the corrective lens element.

11. The camera system of claim 10 , wherein the corrective lens element is configured to correct one or more of a spherical aberration, a coma, a field curvature, or an astigmatism.

12. The camera system of claim 10 , wherein the corrective lens element includes an anti-aliasing feature.

13. The camera system of claim 10 , wherein the corrective lens element includes at least one toroidal lens element.

14. The camera system of claim 10 , wherein the anamorphic lens element is configured to compress the image in the horizontal or vertical dimension by a squeeze ratio of between 1.25 to 1.8.

15. A method for processing an image in a lens system comprising the steps of:

receiving an image in an anamorphic lens element that is configured to compress the image; and

passing the compressed image through a corrective lens element that is configured to improve the quality of the image produced by the anamorphic lens element on a digital image sensor.

16. The method as recited in claim 15 , wherein the corrective lens element is configured to reduce blurring of the image on the digital image sensor.

17. The method as recited in claim 15 , wherein during the step of receiving, the anamorphic lens element compresses the image in the horizontal or vertical dimension by a squeeze ratio between approximately 1.25 to 1.8.

18. The method as recited in claim 15 , wherein before the step of passing, the compressed image travels along an optical axis of the anamorphic lens element and into the corrective lens element that is positioned along the optical axis.

19. A method for processing an image in a lens system configured for use with a camera, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving an image by an anamorphic lens element that is configured to compress the image in a horizontal or vertical direction; and

passing the compressed image into a corrective lens element attached to the anamorphic lens along an optical axis of the anamorphic lens element, wherein the corrective lens element is configured to improve the quality of the image produced by the anamorphic lens on a digital image sensor connected with the corrective lens element.
