Abstract

The present disclosure concerns a coupling mechanism for detachably attaching two or more utility modules to one another, utility assembles, mobile carriers and other attachable modules and articles.

Claims (40)

1. A container assembly comprising:

a first container comprising:

a first coupler extending from a first face of the first container, the first coupler comprises two sidewalls and a rib, the two sidewalls project from a depressed surface of the first face, the rib extends from at least one of the two sidewalls; and

a latch recess; and

a second container comprising:

a second coupler extending from a second face of the second container, the second coupler comprises a tongue that is offset from the second face, the tongue of the second container is engageable with the rib of the first container, the second coupler defines a first planar surface generally parallel to the second face and that faces away from the second face, and wherein the second coupler defines a second planar surface generally parallel to the second face and that faces towards the second face; and

a latch coupled to the second container, the latch positionable in a locked position in which the latch prevents disengagement of the first container and the second container when the tongue and rib are engaged.

2. The container assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first and second couplers on the first and second containers, respectively, engage when the first and second containers are slid along a sliding path defined by the rib and the tongue.

3. The container assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first face of the first container comprises a top face of the first container, and wherein the second face of the second container comprises a bottom face of the second container.

4. The container assembly of claim 1 , wherein the rib extends in a first direction that is parallel to a bottom face of the first container.

5. The container assembly of claim 4 , wherein the tongue extends in a second direction opposite the first direction.

6. The container assembly of claim 1 , wherein the two sidewalls of the first coupler project from the depressed surface away from each other, and wherein the two sidewalls of the first coupler project from the depressed surface at an obtuse angle with respect to the depressed surface.

7. The container assembly of claim 1 , wherein the rib is perpendicular to at least one of the two sidewalls, and, wherein the rib is parallel to the depressed surface of the first face.

8. The container assembly of claim 1 , wherein a width of the second container is half-size a width of the first container.

9. The container assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the latch and the second coupler are actuated between a first position extending above the second face and a second position not extending above the second face.

10. The container assembly of claim 1 , wherein when the tongue and rib are engaged:

a first side wall of the two sidewalls of the first coupler and a second sidewall of the second coupler interface to restrict displacement between the first container and the second container in a third direction perpendicular to the first direction and parallel to the first face of the first container.

11. A first container configured to be removably coupled to a second container, the first container comprising:

a first face;

a second face; and

a first coupler that extends from the first face, wherein the first coupler comprises two sidewalls and a rib, the two sidewalls project from a depressed surface of the first face, the rib extends from at least one of the two sidewalls;

a second coupler that extends from the second face, wherein the second coupler comprises a tongue that is offset from the second face, wherein the second coupler defines a first planar surface generally parallel to the second face and that faces away from the second face, and wherein the second coupler defines a second planar surface generally parallel to the second face and that faces towards the second face;

a latch recess; and

a latch, the latch positionable in a locked position in which the latch interlocks with a second latch recess in the second container restricting displacement between the first container and the second container.

12. The first container of claim 11 , wherein the first face comprises a top face of the first container, and wherein the second face comprises a bottom face of the first container.

13. The first container of claim 11 , wherein the rib extends in a first direction that is parallel to a bottom face of the first container, and wherein the tongue extends in a second direction opposite the first direction.

14. The first container of claim 11 , wherein the two sidewalls of the first coupler project from the depressed surface away from each other, and wherein the two sidewalls of the first coupler project from the depressed surface at an obtuse angle with respect to the depressed surface.

15. The first container of claim 11 , wherein the rib is perpendicular to at least one of the two sidewalls, and wherein the rib is parallel to the depressed surface of the first face.

16. A container assembly comprising:

a first container comprising:

a first coupler extending from a first face of the first container, the first coupler comprises two sidewalls and a rib, the two sidewalls project from a depressed surface of the first face, the rib extends from at least one of the two sidewalls, and the rib extends in a first direction that is parallel to the first face of the first container; and

a latch recess; and

a second container comprising:

a second coupler extending from a second face of the second container, the second coupler comprises a tongue that is offset from the second face, the tongue extends in a second direction opposite the first direction, the tongue of the second container is engageable with the rib of the first container, the second coupler defines a first planar surface generally parallel to the second face and that faces away from the second face, and wherein the second coupler defines a second planar surface generally parallel to the second face and that faces towards the second face; and

a latch coupled to the second container, the latch positionable in a locked position in which the latch prevents disengagement of the first container and the second container when the tongue and rib are engaged.

17. The container assembly of claim 16 , wherein when the tongue and rib are engaged:

a portion of the first coupler and a portion of the second coupler interface to restrict displacement between the first container and the second container in a third direction perpendicular to the first direction and parallel to the first face of the first container.

18. The container assembly of claim 16 , wherein at least one of the latch and the second coupler actuate between a first position and a second position, wherein the at least one of the latch and the second coupler extends above the second face when in the first position.

19. The container assembly of claim 16 , wherein the first face of the first container comprises a top face of the first container, and wherein the second face of the second container comprises a bottom face of the second container.

20. The container assembly of claim 1 , wherein the two sidewalls of the first coupler project from the depressed surface at an obtuse angle with respect to the depressed surface.
