Abstract

A removable dental appliance may include an appliance body configured to at least partially surround a plurality of teeth. The appliance body may include a unitary material defining a shell shaped to receive at least one tooth of the patient; a spring member integrally formed with the shell; and a positioning member integrally formed with the shell. The spring member may be configured to receive an attachment affixed to the at least one tooth. The spring member may be configured to apply a spring force to the attachment to cause movement of the at least one tooth toward a desired position when the removable dental appliance is worn by the patient. The positioning member may be configured to facilitate engagement of the spring member with the attachment in response to a positioning force being applied to the positioning member.

Claims (33)

1. A removable dental appliance comprising:

an appliance body configured to at least partially surround a plurality of teeth of a dental arch of a patient, the appliance body comprising:

a unitary material defining a shell shaped to receive at least one tooth of the patient;

a spring member integrally formed with the shell, the spring member comprising a recess in the shell and a region of the shell adjacent the recess; and

a deformable occlusal bulge integrally formed with the shell, the bulge creating a cavity between the shell and occlusal surfaces of the teeth when the appliance is seated on the dental arch, the bulge having an original shape spanning over the occlusal surfaces of at least two teeth of the dental arch and defining a change in a contour of the shell such that the shell does not follow the contour of the occlusal surfaces of the teeth in the cavity,

wherein the recess is configured to receive an attachment affixed to the at least one tooth, wherein the spring member is configured to apply a spring force to the attachment to cause movement of the at least one tooth toward a desired position when the removable dental appliance is worn by the patient, wherein the bulge is configured to receive a positioning force to deform the appliance body to facilitate engagement of the spring member with the attachment, wherein the reception of the positioning force deforms the occlusal bulge into the cavity in a direction towards the occlusal surfaces, and wherein when the at least one tooth reaches the desired position, the deformable occlusal bulge is configured to return to its original shape.

2. The removable dental appliance of claim 1 , wherein the shell comprises a surface defining a void internal to the shell and shaped to receive the at least one tooth in the desired position.

3. The removable dental appliance of claim 1 , wherein the recess extends through a thickness of the shell and is elongated.

The removable dental appliance of claim 3 , wherein the recess comprises a first dimension extending substantially perpendicular to a direction of the spring force and a second dimension extending substantially parallel to the direction of the spring force, and wherein the first dimension is greater than the second dimension.

The removable dental appliance of claim 1 , wherein the appliance body further comprises one or more flexural regions configured to facilitate deformation of appliance body when positioning force is applied to positioning member, the flexural region comprises at least one of a fold, gap, or cutout in the appliance body.

6. The removable dental appliance of claim 5 , wherein the bulge is configured to receive the positioning force from an occlusal surface of a second, opposing dental arch of the patient.

7. A system comprising:

an ordered set of removable dental appliances configured to reposition one or more teeth of a patient, each removable dental appliance in the set of removable dental appliances comprising:

an appliance body configured to at least partially surround a plurality of teeth of a dental arch of a patient, the appliance body comprising:

a unitary material defining a shell shaped to receive at least one tooth of the patient;

a spring member integrally formed with the shell, the spring member comprising a recess in the shell and a region of the shell adjacent the recess; and

a deformable occlusal bulge integrally formed with the shell, the bulge creating a cavity between the shell and occlusal surfaces of the teeth when the appliance is seated on the dental arch, the bulge having an original shape spanning over the occlusal surfaces of at least two teeth of the dental arch and defining a change in a contour of the shell such that the shell does not follow the contour of the occlusal surfaces of the teeth in the cavity,

wherein the recess is configured to receive an attachment affixed to the at least one tooth, wherein the spring member is configured to apply a spring force to the attachment to cause movement of the at least one tooth toward a desired position when the removable dental appliance is worn by the patient, wherein the bulge is configured to receive a positioning force to deform the appliance body to facilitate engagement of the spring member with the attachment, wherein the reception of the positioning force deforms the occlusal bulge into the cavity in a direction towards the occlusal surfaces, and wherein when the at least one tooth reaches the desired position, the deformable occlusal bulge is configured to return to its original shape.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein each removable dental appliance in the set of removable dental appliances comprises an aligner tray.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the shell comprises a surface defining a void internal to the shell and shaped to receive the at least one tooth in the desired position.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the spring member is biased toward the attachment when the removable dental appliance is worn by the patient or in response to the positioning force being applied to the bulge.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein a thickness of the shell increases near the spring member.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein the appliance body further comprises one or more flexural regions configured to facilitate deformation of appliance body when positioning force is applied to the bulge, the flexural region comprises at least one of a fold, gap, or cutout in the appliance body.

13. A removable dental appliance comprising:

an appliance body configured to at least partially surround a plurality of teeth of a dental arch of a patient, the appliance body comprising:

a unitary material defining a shell shaped to receive at least one tooth of the patient;

a spring member integrally formed with the shell, the spring member comprising a recess in the shell and a region of the shell adjacent the recess; and

a deformable occlusal bulge integrally formed with the shell, the bulge creating a cavity between the shell and occlusal surfaces of the teeth when the appliance is seated on the dental arch, the bulge having an original shape spanning over the occlusal surfaces of at least two teeth of the dental arch and defining a change in a contour of the shell such that the shell does not follow the contour of the occlusal surfaces of the teeth in the cavity,

wherein the recess is configured to receive an attachment affixed to the at least one tooth, wherein the spring member is configured to apply a spring force to the attachment to cause movement of the at least one tooth toward a desired position when the removable dental appliance is worn by the patient, and wherein the bulge is configured to facilitate engagement of the spring member with the attachment in response to a positioning force being applied to the positioning member, wherein the recess comprises a first dimension extending substantially perpendicular to a direction of the spring force and a second dimension extending substantially parallel to the direction of the spring force, and wherein the first dimension is greater than the second dimension, and wherein first dimension is positioned parallel to an occlusal plane of the teeth, wherein the reception of the positioning force deforms the occlusal bulge into the cavity in a direction towards the occlusal surfaces, and wherein when the at least one tooth reaches the desired position, the deformable occlusal bulge is configured to return to its original shape.

14. The removable dental appliance of claim 13 , wherein the shell comprises a surface defining a void internal to the shell and shaped to receive the at least one tooth in the desired position.

15. The removable dental appliance of claim 13 , wherein the recess extends through a thickness of the shell and is elongated.

16. The removable dental appliance of claim 13 , wherein the appliance body further comprises one or more flexural regions configured to facilitate deformation of appliance body when positioning force is applied to the bulge, the flexural region comprises at least one of a fold, gap, or cutout in the appliance body.

17. The removable dental appliance of claim 13 , wherein the bulge is configured to receive the positioning force from an occlusal surface of a second, opposing dental arch of the patient.
