Abstract

A cable may include an inner conductor and an outer conductor coaxially arranged around the inner conductor. A dielectric strength member may be positioned between the inner and outer conductors. The dielectric strength member may have a thickness between 0.1 mm and 50 mm and a tensile strength of at least 5,000 MPa. Additionally, a jacket may be formed around the outer conductor.

Claims (34)

1. A cable comprising:

an inner conductor;

an outer conductor coaxially arranged around the inner conductor;

a dielectric strength member positioned between the inner conductor and the outer conductor, the dielectric strength member having a thickness between 0.1 mm and 50 mm and a tensile strength between 5,000 MPa and 500 GPa;

a jacket formed around the outer conductor.

2. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the inner conductor and the outer conductor comprise a balanced pair of conductors.

3. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the inner conductor has a first direct current resistance and the outer conductor has a second direct current resistance approximately equal to the first direct current resistance.

4. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the dielectric strength member comprises glass reinforced plastic.

5. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the dielectric strength member comprises basalt fiber.

6. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the dielectric strength member defines a longitudinally extending cavity, and

wherein the inner conductor is positioned within the cavity.

7. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the dielectric strength member comprises a plurality of sections radially spaced around an outer periphery of the inner conductor.

8. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the dielectric strength member is helically twisted around the inner conductor.

9. A cable, comprising:

a dielectric strength member defining a longitudinally extending internal cavity, the dielectric strength member comprising a thickness between 0.1 mm and 50 mm and having tensile strength between 5,000 MPa and 500 GPa;

an inner conductor positioned within the internal cavity;

an outer conductor formed around the dielectric strength member; and

a jacket formed around the outer conductor.

10. The cable of claim 9 , wherein the inner conductor and the outer conductor comprise a balanced pair of conductors.

11. The cable of claim 9 , wherein the dielectric strength member comprises glass reinforced plastic.

12. The cable of claim 9 , wherein the dielectric strength member comprises basalt fiber.

13. The cable of claim 9 , wherein the dielectric strength member comprises a plurality of sections radially spaced around an outer periphery of the inner conductor.

14. The cable of claim 9 , wherein the dielectric strength member is helically twisted around the inner conductor.

15. A cable comprising:

an inner conductor;

an outer conductor coaxially arranged around the inner conductor, wherein a separation distance between the inner and outer conductors is between 0.1 mm and 50 mm;

a dielectric strength member positioned between the inner conductor and the outer conductor, the dielectric strength member having a tensile strength between 5,000 MPa and 500 GPa and occupying between five percent and one hundred percent of the volume between the inner conductor and the outer conductor; and

a jacket formed around the outer conductor.

16. The cable of claim 15 , wherein the inner conductor and the outer conductor comprise a balanced pair of conductors.

17. The cable of claim 15 , wherein the dielectric strength member comprises one of glass reinforced plastic or basalt fiber.

18. The cable of claim 15 , wherein the dielectric strength member defines a longitudinally extending cavity, and

wherein the inner conductor is positioned within the cavity.

19. The cable of claim 15 , wherein the dielectric strength member comprises a plurality of sections radially spaced around an outer periphery of the inner conductor.

20. The cable of claim 15 , wherein the dielectric strength member is helically twisted around the inner conductor.
