Abstract

Various battery packs are presented for use with twenty volt (20 V) power tools. In some embodiments, one or more lithium-ion battery cells of the battery packs are received by a handle of the power tool.

Claims (35)

1. A power tool system, comprising:

a battery pack comprising a battery pack housing and battery cells in the battery pack housing, the battery pack housing comprising a battery pack base portion and a battery pack post portion that extends from the battery pack base portion; and

a power tool comprising a power tool handle and a power tool battery compartment in the power tool handle, wherein the power tool battery compartment is configured to:

receive the battery pack post portion in at least two orientations that selectively position the battery pack base portion in at least two orientations with respect to the power tool; and

operably couple the battery cells of the battery pack to the power tool via the received battery pack post portion.

2. The power tool system of claim 1 , wherein the battery pack base portion extends further from the battery pack post portion in a first direction than in a second direction opposite to the first direction.

3. The power tool system of claim 1 , wherein the battery pack base portion extends further in a first direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the battery pack post portion than in a second direction opposite to the first direction.

4. The power tool system of claim 1 , wherein the battery pack positions at least 50% of at least two of the battery cells within the power tool handle when the battery pack is operably coupled to the power tool battery compartment.

5. The power tool system of claim 1 , wherein the battery pack positions at least 80% of at least two of the battery cells within the power tool handle when the battery pack is operably coupled to the power tool battery compartment.

6. The power tool system of claim 1 , wherein the battery pack positions 100% of at least two of the battery cells within the power tool handle when the battery pack is operably coupled to the power tool battery compartment.

7. The power tool system of claim 1 , wherein each of the battery cells comprises a cylindrical lithium-ion battery cell.

8. The power tool system of claim 1 , wherein:

the battery cells comprise first battery cells arranged in the battery pack base portion and second battery cells that at least partially reside in the battery pack post portion;

each first battery cell comprises a longitudinal axis that is parallel to longitudinal axes of other first battery cells; and

each second battery cell comprises a longitudinal axis that is not parallel to the longitudinal axes of the first battery cells.

9. The power tool system of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the second battery cells comprises an end that extends into a gap between two of the first battery cells.

10. The power tool system of claim 1 , wherein the battery cells collectively provide the power tool with a nominal 20 volts.

11. A battery pack for a power tool comprising a battery compartment, the battery pack comprising:

a housing comprising a base portion and a post portion that extends from the base portion; and

battery cells within the housing;

wherein the post portion is configured to:

enter the battery compartment in at least two orientations that selectively position the base portion in at least two orientations with respect to the power tool; and

operably couple the battery cells to the power tool via the battery compartment.

12. The battery pack of claim 11 , wherein the base portion extends further from the post portion in a first direction than in a second direction opposite to the first direction.

13. The battery pack of claim 11 , wherein the base portion extends further in a first direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the post portion than in a second direction opposite to the first direction.

14. The battery pack of claim 11 , wherein the post portion positions at least 50% of at least two of the battery cells within the battery compartment of the power tool when the battery pack is operably coupled to the battery compartment.

15. The battery pack of claim 11 , wherein the post portion positions at least 80% of at least two of the battery cells within the battery compartment of the power tool when the battery pack is operably coupled to the battery compartment.

16. The battery pack of claim 11 , wherein the post portion positions 100% of at least two of the battery cells within the battery compartment of the power tool when the battery pack is operably coupled to the battery compartment.

17. The battery pack of claim 11 , wherein each of the battery cells comprises a cylindrical lithium-ion battery cell.

18. The battery pack of claim 11 , wherein:

the battery cells comprise first battery cells arranged in the base portion and second battery cells that at least partially reside in the post portion;

each first battery cell comprises a longitudinal axis that is parallel to longitudinal axes of other first battery cells; and

each second battery cell comprises a longitudinal axis that is not parallel to the longitudinal axes of the first battery cells.

19. The battery pack of claim 18 , wherein at least one of the second battery cells comprises an end that extends into a gap between two of the first battery cells.

20. The battery pack of claim 11 , wherein the battery cells collectively provide a nominal 20 volts.
