Abstract

A recovery system and method with repeating communication functionality includes a station configured to send a first message and at least a first remote transmitting unit responsive to the central station and configured to transmit a second message to a locating unit. At least a second remote transmitting unit includes a receiver which receives the second message, a controller configured to process the second message, and a transmitter for transmitting a third message to the locating unit.

Claims (27)

1. A remote transmitting unit for providing an activation message to a vehicle location unit associated with a vehicle, the remote transmitting unit comprising:

a first receiving unit configured to receive, from another remote transmitting unit, a first activation message meant for the vehicle location unit;

a controller configured to process the first activation message; and

a transmitter configured to transmit, in response to a determination that at least two instances of the first activation message have been received from the another remote transmitting unit, a second activation message to the vehicle location unit using the processed first activation message.

2. The remote transmitting unit of claim 1 , wherein the first receiving unit is configured to receive the first activation message from a central station.

3. The remote transmitting unit of claim 2 , further comprising a landline connection to the central station to receive the first activation message and a wireless data link to transmit the second activation message.

4. The remote transmitting unit of claim 1 , wherein the controller of the remote transmitting unit is configured to transmit the second activation message only for a predetermined time period.

5. The remote transmitting unit of claim 1 , wherein the controller of the remote transmitting unit is configured to ignore a first activation message below a predetermined signal strength.

6. The remote transmitting unit of claim 1 , further comprising a wireless data link to receive the first activation message and for transmitting the second activation message.

7. The remote transmitting unit of claim 1 , wherein the first activation message and the second activation message include the same information.

8. The remote transmitting unit of claim 1 , wherein the first activation message includes a first code representing a vehicle location unit identifier and a second code that activates the vehicle location unit to transmit a signal.

9. The remote transmitting unit of claim 8 , wherein the transmitter is configured to repeat the transmission of the second activation message, and wherein the second activation message includes the first and second codes.

10. The remote transmitting unit of claim 1 , wherein the first activation message includes a first code representing a vehicle location unit identifier and a second code that adjusts the transmission schedule of the vehicle location unit.

11. The remote transmitting unit of claim 1 , wherein the first activation message includes a first code representing a vehicle location unit identifier and a second code that deactivates the vehicle location unit.

12. A recovery method comprising:

receiving, by a remote transmitting unit and from another remote transmitting unit, a first activation message meant for a vehicle location unit associated with a vehicle, the first activation message including a first code representing a vehicle location unit identifier;

processing, by the remote transmitting unit, the first activation message to generate a second activation message; and

transmitting, by the remote transmitting unit and in response to a determination that at least two instances of the first activation message have been received from the another remote transmitting unit, the second activation message to the vehicle location unit using the processed first activation message.

13. The recovery method of claim 12 , wherein:

receiving the first activation message comprises receiving the first activation message via a landline connection to a central station; and

transmitting the second activation message comprises transmitting the second activation message via a wireless data link to the another remote transmitting unit.

14. The recovery method of claim 12 , wherein:

receiving the first activation message comprises receiving the first activation message via a wireless data link to the another remote transmitting unit; and

transmitting the second activation message comprises transmitting the second activation message via the wireless data link to the vehicle location unit.

15. The recovery method of claim 14 , wherein transmitting the second activation message comprises transmitting the second activation message for a predetermined time period.

16. The recovery method of claim 14 , wherein transmitting the second activation message comprises transmitting the second activation message in response to receiving a first activation message at or above a predetermined signal strength.

17. The recovery method of claim 12 , wherein the first activation message and the second activation message include the same information.
