Abstract

A device is described for treating a nasal airway by modifying a property of a nasal tissue of or near a nasal valve of the airway, without using a surgical incision or an implant, to decrease airflow resistance or perceived airflow resistance in the nasal airway. Various embodiments include an elongate shaft, a bipolar radiofrequency delivery member extending from one end of the shaft, and a handle attached to the elongate shaft at an opposite end from the radiofrequency delivery member. The radiofrequency delivery member is sized to be inserted into a nose and configured to at least temporarily deform the nasal tissue and deliver radiofrequency energy. The radiofrequency delivery member includes two rows of protruding electrodes disposed on a tissue contact surface, and the device is configured to deliver radiofrequency energy from one row of electrodes to the other row of electrodes.

Claims (18)

1. A method for deactivating tissue in a nasal airway of a patient without ablating or forming an incision in the tissue, the method comprising:

advancing a treatment element of a laser delivery device through a nostril of the patient, into the nasal airway;

positioning the treatment element near a target tissue in the nasal airway, wherein the target tissue comprises a submucosal tissue underlying nasal mucosa lining the nasal airway;

activating the treatment element to deliver laser energy through the nasal mucosa to a selected tissue depth to heat the target tissue and thus deactivate the target tissue, without ablating or forming an incision in the target tissue; and

removing the treatment element from the nasal airway.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the submucosal tissue is selected from the group consisting of muscle, ligaments, cartilage, tendon and nerve.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising controlling at least one characteristic of the delivered laser energy with a control system coupled with the laser delivery device.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a substance to the nasal airway before advancing the treatment element into the nasal airway.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment element comprises two laser delivery members, and wherein activating the treatment element causes the two laser delivery members to deliver two laser beams that converge on the target tissue at the selected tissue depth.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying one or more treatment parameters on a console connected to the laser delivery device while the laser energy is applied, the one or more treatment parameters selected from the group consisting of elapsed treatment time, remaining treatment time, temperature of the target tissue, temperature of the nasal mucosa, the selected tissue depth, and an actual depth of treatment.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying local anesthesia to an area at or near the target tissue.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the patient suffers from rhinitis, and wherein deactivating the target tissue results in a reduction of mucus production in the patient's nasal cavity.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

repositioning the treatment element to a new location within the nasal airway; and

activating the treatment element to deliver laser energy through the nasal mucosa to the selected tissue depth to heat an additional target tissue and thus deactivate the additional target tissue without ablating tissue.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

sensing a temperature of the nasal mucosa using a thermocouple on the laser delivery device; and

modifying delivery of the laser energy based on the sensed temperature.
