Abstract

Techniques for managing activation of software, e.g., an operating system, in an information processing system are provided. For example, a method comprises the following steps. A data object is obtained for a system having an un-activated computer program stored thereon. The data object comprises information about the system encrypted by a private value. The method then causes the data object to be securely stored on a distributed ledger for subsequent access during a process to activate the computer program.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a private value comprising a hash value created from one or more unique identifiers from a system having an un-activated computer program stored thereon;

obtaining a data object for the system having the un-activated computer program stored thereon, wherein the data object comprises information about the system encrypted by the private value; and

causing the data object to be securely stored on a distributed ledger for subsequent access during a process to activate the un-activated computer program;

wherein the steps are performed by a processing device comprising a processor operatively coupled to a memory.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more unique identifiers of the system comprise one or more of a service tag and a serial number.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information about the system comprises at least one of a version identifier of the un-activated computer program stored on the system and enabled features of the un-activated computer program stored on the system.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more unique identifiers of the system comprise a set of unique identifiers of the system, the set of unique identifiers of the system comprising a serial number of the system, a service tag for the system, and an identifier of a component in the system.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the identifier of a component in the system is an identifier of a motherboard installed in the system.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distributed ledger is a blockchain network and the data object is at least part of a transaction block.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the un-activated computer program is an operating system.

8. An article of manufacture comprising a non-transitory processor-readable storage medium having stored therein program code of one or more software programs, wherein the program code when executed by the processing device causes said processing device to perform the steps of:

receiving a private value comprising a hash value created from one or more unique identifiers from a system having an un-activated computer program stored thereon;

obtaining a data object for the system having the un-activated computer program stored thereon, wherein the data object comprises information about the system encrypted by the private value; and

causing the data object to be securely stored on a distributed ledger for subsequent access during a process to activate the computer program.

9. An apparatus comprising:

a processing device operatively coupled to a memory and configured to:

receive a private value comprising a hash value created from one or more unique identifiers from a system having an un-activated computer program stored thereon;

obtain a data object for the system having the un-activated computer program stored thereon, wherein the data object comprises information about the system encrypted by the private value; and

cause the data object to be securely stored on a distributed ledger for subsequent access during a process to activate the un-activated computer program.

10. The article of manufacture of claim 8 , wherein the one or more unique identifiers of the system comprise one or more of a service tag and a serial number.

11. The article of manufacture of claim 8 , wherein the information about the system comprises at least one of a version identifier of the un-activated computer program stored on the system and enabled features of the un-activated computer program stored on the system.

12. The article of manufacture of claim 8 , wherein the one or more unique identifiers of the system comprises a set of unique identifiers of the system, the set of unique identifiers of the system comprising a serial number of the system, a service tag for the system, and an identifier of a component in the system.

13. The article of manufacture of claim 12 , wherein the identifier of a component in the system is an identifier of a motherboard installed in the system.

14. The article of manufacture of claim 8 , wherein the distributed ledger is a blockchain network and the data object is at least part of a transaction block.

15. The article of manufacture of claim 8 , wherein the program code when executed by said processing device causes said processing device to further perform the steps of:

decrypting the data object using the private value; and

responsive to the private value confirming that the system is valid, activating the un-activated computer program for use by the system.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the one or more unique identifiers of the system comprise one or more of a service tag and a serial number.

17. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the information about the system comprises at least one of a version identifier of the un-activated computer program stored on the system and enabled features of the un-activated computer program stored on the system.

18. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the one or more unique identifiers of the system comprises a set of unique identifiers of the system, the set of unique identifiers of the system comprising a serial number of the system, a service tag for the system, and an identifier of a component in the system.

19. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the distributed ledger is a blockchain network and the data object is at least part of a transaction block, and the un-activated computer program is an operating system.

20. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said processing device is further configured to:

decrypt the data object using the private value; and

responsive to the private value confirming that the system is valid, activate the computer program for use by the system.
