Abstract

Embodiments are directed towards collecting information regarding the implementation of dynamic frequency selection and automatic channel selection by one or more wireless communication devices. And to use the collected information to determine if other communication devices are coupled to communicate with each other via a wireless connection or a wired connection, or to modify the automatic channel selection mechanism used by one or more wireless communication devices.

Claims (57)

1. A method, comprising:

identifying a first communication device that has performed first dynamic frequency selection in a geographical area associated with a second communication device;

receiving dynamic-frequency-selection-performance information associated with the first dynamic frequency selection for the first communication device; and

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the second dynamic frequency selection of the second communication device comprises:

determining, based on the received dynamic-frequency-selection-performance information, at least one pattern of channel changes by at least the first communication device; and

modifying the second dynamic frequency selection of the second communication device for selecting channel changes based on the at least one pattern.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the second dynamic frequency selection of the second communication device comprises:

determining, based on the received dynamic-frequency-selection-performance information, configuration updates for the second communication device; and

sending the configuration updates to the second communication device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the second dynamic frequency selection of the second communication device comprises:

updating an automatic channel selection algorithm used by the second communication device to perform the second dynamic frequency selection.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received dynamic-frequency-selection-performance information comprises at least one of channels of operation, data transfer rates, number of channel changes within a given time period, or a signal strength of access points at times of channel changes.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received dynamic-frequency-selection-performance information comprises at least one of:

a number of channel changes made by at least the first communication device over a first period of time;

an average data transfer rate of at least the first communication device over a second period of time;

a proximity of known Terminal Doppler Weather Radar systems to the geographic area; or

an average bandwidth activity of at least the first communication device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the first communication device comprises:

selecting the first communication device when located within a predetermined proximity to the second communication device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the first communication device comprises:

selecting the first communication device when in range of interfering with wireless communications of the second communication device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein first communication device and the second communication device are configured to transmit and receive wireless signals within the U-NII band and utilize dynamic frequency selection to change wireless channels in the U-NII band.

10. A computing device, comprising:

a memory that stores computer instructions; and

one or more processors configured to execute the computer instructions, wherein execution of the computer instructions cause the one or more processors to:

identify a first wireless communication device and a second wireless communication devices within a geographical area, wherein the first wireless communication device uses a first dynamic frequency selection and the second wireless communication device uses a second dynamic frequency selection;

receive dynamic-frequency-selection-performance information associated with the first dynamic frequency selection used by the first wireless communication device; and

provide dynamic-frequency-selection-modification information to the second wireless communication device to independently modify the second dynamic frequency selection used by the second wireless communication device from the first dynamic frequency selection used by the first wireless communication device based on the received dynamic-frequency-selection-performance information, wherein the modified second dynamic frequency selection used by the second wireless communication device is different from the first dynamic frequency selection used by the first wireless communication device.

11. The computing device of claim 10 , wherein execution of the computer instructions by the one or more processors further cause the one more processors to:

determine, based on the received dynamic-frequency-selection-performance information, at least one pattern of channel changes by at least the first wireless communication device; and

modify the second dynamic frequency selection of the second wireless communication device for selecting channel changes based on the at least one pattern.

12. The computing device of claim 10 , wherein execution of the computer instructions by the one or more processors to provide the dynamic-frequency-selection-modification information to the second wireless communication device further cause the one more processors to:

determine, based on the received dynamic-frequency-selection-performance information, configuration updates for the second wireless communication device; and

send the configuration updates to the second wireless communication device.

13. The computing device of claim 10 , wherein execution of the computer instructions by the one or more processors to provide the dynamic-frequency-selection-modification information to the second wireless communication device further cause the one more processors to:

update an automatic channel selection algorithm used by the second wireless communication device to perform the second dynamic frequency selection.

14. The computing device of claim 10 , wherein execution of the computer instructions by the one or more processors to identify the first wireless communication device further cause the one or more processors to:

select the first wireless communication device when located within a predetermined proximity to the second wireless communication device.

15. The computing device of claim 10 , wherein execution of the computer instructions by the one or more processors to identify the first wireless communication device further cause the one or more processors to:

select the first wireless communication device when in range of interfering with wireless communications of the second wireless communication device.

16. The computing device of claim 10 , wherein first wireless communication device and the second wireless communication device are configured to transmit and receive wireless signals within the U-NII band and utilize dynamic frequency selection to change wireless channels in the U-NII band.
