Abstract

Systems, methods, and devices for humidifying a breathing gas using a vapor transfer unit are presented. The method includes providing a first vapor transfer unit having a gas passage and a liquid passage, delivering a liquid to the liquid passage, delivering a gas to the gas passage, humidifying the gas by delivering vapor from the liquid in the liquid passage to the gas in the gas passage, exiting the humidified gas outside the vapor transfer unit at first relative humidity and at a high gas flow rate, and reducing the gas flow rate through the first vapor transfer unit to less than a low gas flow rate, while preventing the relative humidity from exceeding the first relative humidity by more than an acceptable margin.

Claims (36)

1. A system for humidifying a breathing gas, the system comprising:

a housing having a liquid inlet, a liquid outlet, a gas inlet, and a gas outlet;

a vapor transfer compartment disposed within the housing and having:

a first gas passage coupling the gas inlet to the gas outlet;

a liquid passage coupling the liquid inlet to the liquid outlet; and

a permeable membrane separating the first gas passage and the liquid passage; and

a bypass gas passage disposed externally to the housing and coupling the gas inlet to the gas outlet, the bypass gas passage being configured to receive a fraction of the gas received by the gas inlet, wherein the bypass gas passage is configured to automatically alter the fraction of gas passed through the bypass gas passage, and wherein the fraction of gas passed through the bypass gas passage is solely a function of fixed dimensions of the bypass gas passage.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the bypass gas passage comprises a constriction configured to provide resistance to gas flow.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein a cross-sectional area of the constriction is fixed.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the permeable membrane comprises a plurality of hollow fiber membranes.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the first gas passage is defined by internal walls of the plurality of hollow fiber membranes.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the liquid inlet is formed in the housing and is positioned to direct liquid toward outer surfaces of the hollow fiber membranes and the liquid outlet is positioned to direct liquid from the housing.

7. The system of claim 2 , wherein the constriction comprises a protrusion that narrows a portion of the bypass gas passage.

8. The system of claim 2 , wherein the constriction automatically alters the fraction of gas passed through the bypass gas passage inversely with a change in a flow rate of the breathing gas.

9. The system of claim 2 , wherein the construction is ring-shaped.

10. The system of claim 2 , wherein the constriction is sized so that the fraction of gas received by the bypass passage decreases as a rate of gas flow into the gas inlet increases.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the bypass gas passage is a tube.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the bypass gas passage is disposed parallel to the first gas passage.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the bypass gas passage is configured to automatically alter the fraction of gas passed through the bypass gas passage inversely with a change in the flow rate of the breathing gas.

14. A method for humidifying a breathing gas, the method comprising:

providing a housing having a liquid inlet, a liquid outlet, a gas inlet, and a gas outlet;

providing a vapor transfer compartment disposed within the housing, the vapor transfer compartment having:

a first gas passage coupling the gas inlet to the gas outlet;

a liquid passage coupling the liquid inlet to the liquid outlet; and

a permeable membrane separating the first gas passage and the liquid passage;

delivering the breathing gas to the gas inlet at a gas flow rate;

passing a fraction of the breathing gas delivered to the gas inlet through a bypass gas passage, wherein the bypass gas passage is disposed externally to the housing and couples the gas inlet to the gas outlet, wherein the bypass gas passage is configured to automatically alter the fraction of gas passed through the bypass gas passage, and wherein the fraction of gas passed through the bypass gas passage is solely a function of fixed dimensions of the bypass gas passage; and

humidifying the breathing gas within the vapor transfer compartment.

15. The method of claim 14 , comprising directing the breathing gas to an upstream end of the first gas passage via the gas inlet.

16. The method of claim 14 , comprising directing a breathing gas output from a downstream end of first gas passage via the gas outlet.

17. The method of claim 14 , comprising delivering the breathing gas to the gas inlet with the gas flow rate being greater than 8 liters per minute.

18. The method of claim 14 , comprising outputting the breathing gas from the gas outlet with the flow rate of the breathing gas being greater than 35 liters per minute at a first relative humidity.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein passing the fraction of the breathing gas through the bypass gas passage comprises passing the breathing gas through a constriction configured to provide resistance to gas flow.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the constriction comprises a protrusion that narrows a portion of the bypass gas passage.

21. The method of claim 19 , wherein the constriction automatically alters the fraction of the breathing gas passed through the bypass gas passage inversely with a change in the flow rate of the breathing gas.

22. The method of claim 14 , wherein the bypass gas passage is configured to automatically alter the fraction of gas passed through the bypass gas passage inversely with a change in the flow rate of the breathing gas.
