Abstract

Embodiments of golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads are generally described herein. In one example, a method of manufacturing a golf club head may include providing a body portion and a weight portion. The method may include injecting a polymer material into an interior cavity of the body portion from a first opening of a port on the body portion through a second opening of the port connected to the interior cavity, the second opening being smaller than the first opening. The method may include inserting the weight portion into the port from the first opening until an end of the weight portion engages a portion of the port around the second opening to prevent further insertion of the weight portion into a portion of the port between the second opening and the interior cavity. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.

Claims (38)

1 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head comprising:

providing a body portion comprising steel having a density of between 7.0 grams per cubic centimeter and 8.3 grams per cubic centimeter, and a tensile strength between 500 million Newtons per square meter (500 Megapascals) and 800 million Newtons per square meter (800 Megapascals), the body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a front portion having a face portion with a front surface and a back surface, and a back portion with a back wall portion, and a maximum distance between the top portion and the sole portion being greater than a maximum distance between the face portion and the back wall portion;

providing a weight portion;

injecting a polymer material into an interior cavity of the body portion from a first opening of a port on the body portion through a second opening of the port connected to the interior cavity, the second opening being smaller than the first opening; and

inserting the weight portion into the port from the first opening until an end of the weight portion engages a portion of the port around the second opening to prevent further insertion of the weight portion into a portion of the port between the second opening and the interior cavity,

wherein a distance between the first opening and the second opening is similar or substantially similar to a height of the weight portion.

2 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 1 further comprising applying a bonding agent on the back surface of the face portion from the first opening of the port through the second opening of the port before injecting the polymer material into the interior cavity.

3 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the body portion comprises steel having a hardness of between 10 Rockwell Hardness in the C scale (HRC) and 40 HRC.

4 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the body portion comprises steel having an elongation of between 5% and 40%.

5 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 1 further comprising filling a portion of interior cavity that separates the face portion and the weight portion with the polymer material.

A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the weight portion includes a threaded portion at least partially extending along the height of the weight portion, and wherein a port wall between the first opening and the second opening is threaded to engage the threaded portion of the weight portion to secure the weight portion inside the port between the first opening and the second opening.

7 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head comprising:

providing a body portion comprising steel having a density of between 7.0 grams per cubic centimeter and 8.3 grams per cubic centimeter, and a tensile strength between 600 million Newtons per square meter (600 Megapascals) and 800 million Newtons per square meter (800 Megapascals), the body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a front portion having a face portion with a front surface and a back surface, and a back portion with a back wall portion, a first port at or below a horizontal midplane of the body portion and connected to the interior cavity, a second port above the horizontal midplane, and a maximum distance between the top portion and the sole portion being greater than a maximum distance between the face portion and the back wall portion;

providing a first weight portion including a threaded portion at least partially extending along a height of the weight portion;

providing a second weight portion;

injecting a polymer material into an interior cavity of the body portion from a first opening of the first port through a second opening of the first port connected to the interior cavity, the second opening being smaller than the first opening to provide a shoulder at the second opening;

screwing the first weight portion into the first port from the first opening so that the threaded portion of the first weight portion engages a threaded portion of the first port between the first opening and the second opening until an end of the first weight portion engages the shoulder to prevent further insertion of the first weight portion into a portion of the first port between the second opening and the interior cavity; and

inserting the second weight portion in the second port,

wherein a distance between the first opening of the first port and the second opening of the first port is similar or substantially similar to the height of the first weight portion.

8 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 7 further comprising coating the back surface of the face portion with a bonding agent before injecting the polymer material into the interior cavity, and bonding the polymer material to the bonding agent.

9 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 7 , wherein the body portion comprises steel having a hardness of between 10 Rockwell Hardness in the C scale (HRC) and 40 HRC.

10 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 7 , wherein the body portion comprises steel having an elongation of between 5% and 40%.

11 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 7 , wherein the first weight portion has a greater mass than the second weight portion.

12 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 7 , wherein the first weight portion has a smaller mass than the second weight portion.

13 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 7 , wherein a distance between the first port and the heel portion is greater than a distance between the second port and the toe portion.

14 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head comprising:

providing a face portion having a thickness of less than or equal to 1.905 millimeters (0.075 inch);

providing a body portion comprising a steel having a density of between 7.0 grams per cubic centimeter and 8.3 grams per cubic centimeter, and a tensile strength between 500 million Newtons per square meter (500 Megapascals) and 800 million Newtons per square meter (800 Megapascals), the body portion having an interior cavity, a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a front portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, and a port having a first opening on the body portion and a second opening connected to the interior cavity, the second opening being smaller in diameter than the first opening and being located between the first opening and the interior cavity, a maximum distance between the top portion and the sole portion being greater than a maximum distance between the face portion and the back wall portion;

attaching the face portion to the front portion of the body portion to enclose the interior cavity;

providing a weight portion;

injecting a polymer material into the interior cavity from the first opening of the port through the second opening of the port connected to the interior cavity to partially or entirely fill the interior cavity to at least partially structurally support the face portion during impact of the face portion with a golf ball; and

inserting the weight portion into the port from the first opening such that a portion of the port between the first opening and the second opening surrounds the weight portion along a height of the weight portion, the height of the weight portion being less than or equal to a distance between the first opening and the second opening.

15 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 14 further comprising applying a bonding agent on the back surface of the face portion from the first opening of the port through the second opening of the port before injecting the polymer material into the interior cavity.

16 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the body portion comprises steel having a hardness of between 10 Rockwell Hardness in the C scale (HRC) and 40 HRC.

17 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the body portion comprises steel having an elongation of between 5% and 40%.

18 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the weight portion includes a threaded portion at least partially extending along the height of the weight portion, and wherein a port wall between the first opening and the second opening is threaded to engage the threaded portion of the weight portion to secure the weight portion inside the port between the first opening and the second opening.

19 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the weight portion comprises a material having a greater density than a density of the material of the body portion.

20 . A method of manufacturing a golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the face portion has a thickness of less than or equal to 1.5 millimeters (0.059 inch).
