Abstract

Methods, apparatus, systems and articles of manufacture to count people in an audience are disclosed. An apparatus includes a location determiner to determine a location of a portable device was outside of a media exposure environment, and a proximity determiner to determine a person was in proximity to the portable device. The apparatus also includes a presence detector to: generate first presence information based on the location of the portable device and the proximity of the person to the portable device, the first presence information to indicate that the person was absent from the media exposure environment; compare the first presence information to second presence information collected by a people meter; and, when the second presence information indicates the person was present in the media exposure environment, modify the second presence information based on the first presence information.

when the second presence information indicates the person was present in the media exposure environment at the first time, modify the second presence information based on the first presence information.

2. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second presence information is generated based on manual inputs to the people meter.

3. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the data collected by the portable device includes first data to indicate whether the portable device was in transit outside of the media exposure environment at the first time, and the proximity determiner is to determine the proximity of the person to the portable device based on the first data.

4. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the data collected by the portable device includes usage information indicative of usage of an application executed on the portable device, and the proximity determiner is to determine the proximity of the person to the portable device based on the usage information.

5. The apparatus as defined in claim 4 , further including an identity estimator to estimate an identity of the person based on a type of the application executed on the portable device.

6. The apparatus as defined in claim 4 , further including a characteristic estimator to estimate a demographic characteristic of the person based on a type of the application executed on the portable device.

7. The apparatus as defined in claim 4 , further including an identity estimator to estimate an identity of the person based on a user account associated with the application, the usage of the application involving the person logging in to the user account.

8. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause at least one processor to at least:

determine a location of a portable device was outside of a media exposure environment at a first time, the location determined based on data collected by the portable device;

determine a person was in proximity to the portable device at the first time based on the data collected by the portable device;

generate first presence information based on the location of the portable device and the proximity of the person to the portable device, the first presence information to indicate that the person was absent from the media exposure environment at the first time;

compare the first presence information to second presence information collected by a people meter different than the portable device, the second presence information based on at least one of a login or a logout of the person via the people meter at a second time prior to the first time, the first presence information generated independent of a login of the person via the people meter or a different metering device and independent of a logout of the person via the people meter or the different metering device; and

when the second presence information indicates the person was present in the media exposure environment at the first time, modify the second presence information based on the first presence information.

9. The non-transitory computer readable medium as defined in claim 8 , wherein the second presence information is generated based on manual inputs to the people meter.

10. The non-transitory computer readable medium as defined in claim 8 , wherein the data collected by the portable device includes first data to indicate whether the portable device was in transit outside of the media exposure environment at the first time, and the instructions cause the at least one processor to determine the proximity of the person to the portable device based on the first data.

11. The non-transitory computer readable medium as defined in claim 8 , wherein the data collected by the portable device includes usage information indicative of usage of an application executed on the portable device, and the instructions cause the at least one processor to determine the proximity of the person to the portable device based on the usage information.

12. The non-transitory computer readable medium as defined in claim 11 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to estimate an identity of the person based on a type of the application executed on the portable device.

13. The non-transitory computer readable medium as defined in claim 11 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to estimate a demographic characteristic of the person based on a type of the application executed on the portable device.

14. The non-transitory computer readable medium as defined in claim 11 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to identify the person based on a user account associated with the application, the usage of the application involving the person logging in to the user account.

15. A method comprising:

determining a location of a portable device was outside of a media exposure environment at a first time, the location determined based on data collected by the portable device;

determining a person was in proximity to the portable device at the first time based on the data collected by the portable device;

generating first presence information based on the location of the portable device and the proximity of the person to the portable device, the first presence information indicating that the person was absent from the media exposure environment at the first time;

comparing, by executing an instruction with a processor, the first presence information to second presence information collected by a people meter different than the portable device, the second presence information based on at least one of a login or a logout of the person via the people meter at a second time prior to the first time, the first presence information generated independent of a login of the person via the people meter or a different metering device and independent of a logout of the person via the people meter or the different metering device; and

when the second presence information indicates the person was present in the media exposure environment at the first time, automatically modifying, by executing an instruction with the processor, the second presence information based on the first presence information.

16. The method as defined in claim 15 , wherein the second presence information is generated based on manual inputs to the people meter.

17. The method as defined in claim 15 , wherein the determining of the proximity of the person to the portable device is based on the data collected by the portable device indicating the portable device was in transit outside of the media exposure environment at the first time.
