Abstract

This document discusses, among other things, a Cellular Internet-of-Things (CIoT) network architecture to enable communication between an apparatus of a CIoT User Equipment (UE) and a network through a CIoT enhanced Node B (eNB) according to a lightweight Non-Access Stratum (NAS) protocol. An apparatus of a CIoT eNB can process data for communication between the CIoT UE and the network. The lightweight NAS protocol supports a reduced set of NAS messages for communication between, for example, the CIoT UE and the CIoT eNB, such as using a modified NAS message, or one or more new messages.

Claims (36)

1. An apparatus of a user equipment (UE) configured for operating in a 5G system (5GS), the apparatus comprising: memory; and processing circuitry coupled to the memory,

wherein the processing circuitry is configured to:

encode signaling at attachment to indicate to a network entity whether the UE supports cellular internet-of-things (CIoT) optimization;

encode user data for transport over a control plane without user-plane resource establishment if the UE indicated support for CIoT optimization at attachment; and

wherein when user-plane resources are established, the processing circuitry is configured to encode user data for transport via a layer-2 connection to the network entity in accordance with a non-access stratum (NAS) security context,

wherein the signaling at attachment includes a network capability information element that indicates whether the UE supports CIoT optimization and further indicates a supported packet-data network (PDN) capability of the UE,

wherein the signalling at attachment includes an attachment request, and

wherein if the supported PDN capability of the UE indicated that the UE supports 5GS PDN connectivity and evolved packet system (EPS) PDN connectivity, the processing circuitry is further configured to decode signaling received from the network entity indicating that the attachment request is rejected and redirecting the UE to the EPS PDN connectivity, and

wherein in response to the redirection, the processing circuitry is configured to disable the 5GS PDN connectivity,

wherein the memory is configured to store the NAS security context.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein if the attach request indicates handover from the 5GS PDN connectivity to the EPS PDN connectivity, the processing circuitry is configured to decode a response to the attach request from the network entity, wherein if the response comprises an attach accept, the processing circuitry is configured to disable the 5GS PDN connectivity.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein if the UE is a narrowband IoT UE, the UE is configured to indicate support for control plane CIoT optimization at attachment.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is to configure the UE to establish a first NAS security context for the 5GS PDN connectivity and a second NAS security context for the EPS PDN connectivity.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the processing circuitry is configured to be coupled to transceiver circuitry.

6. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium that stores instructions for execution by processing circuitry of a user equipment (UE) configured for operating in a 5G system (5GS), wherein the processing circuitry is to:

encode signaling at attachment to indicate to a network entity whether the UE supports cellular internet-of-things (CIoT) optimization;

encode user data for transport over a control plane without user-plane resource establishment if the UE indicated support for CIoT optimization at attachment; and

wherein when user-plane resources are established, the processing circuitry is configured to encode user data for transport via a layer-2 connection to the network entity in accordance with a non-access stratum (NAS) security context,

wherein the signaling at attachment includes a network capability information element that indicates whether the UE supports CIoT optimization and further indicates a supported packet-data network (PDN) capability of the UE,

wherein the signalling at attachment includes an attachment request, and

wherein if the supported PDN capability of the UE indicated that the UE supports 5GS PDN connectivity and evolved packet system (EPS) PDN connectivity, the processing circuitry is further configured to decode signaling received from the network entity indicating that the attachment request is rejected and redirecting the UE to the EPS PDN connectivity, and

wherein in response to the redirection, the processing circuitry is configured to disable the 5GS PDN connectivity.

7. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 6 , wherein if the attach request indicates handover from the 5GS PDN connectivity to the EPS PDN connectivity, the processing circuitry is configured to decode a response to the attach request from the network entity, wherein if the response comprises an attach accept, the processing circuitry is configured to disable the 5GS PDN connectivity.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 6 , wherein if the UE is a narrowband IoT UE, the UE is configured to indicate support for control plane CIoT optimization at attachment.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 6 , wherein the processing circuitry is to configure the UE to establish a first NAS security context for the 5GS PDN connectivity and a second NAS security context for the EPS PDN connectivity.

10. An apparatus of a base station configured for operating in a 5G system (5GS), the apparatus comprising: memory; and processing circuitry coupled to the memory,

wherein the processing circuitry is configured to:

decode signaling at attachment from a user equipment (UE), the signalling to indicate to a network entity whether the UE supports cellular internet-of-things (CIoT) optimization;

decode user data for transport over a control plane without user-plane radio bearer establishment if the UE indicated support for CIoT optimization at attachment; and
