Abstract

A method of processing a transaction between a customer and a merchant includes receiving from a mobile device of the customer or from another device of the customer an indication of consent to perform a cardless payment transaction with the merchant, receiving from the mobile device an indication that the customer is within a predetermined distance of the merchant, after receiving both the indication of consent and the indication that the customer is within the predetermined distance, sending to a computer system of the merchant an indication of the presence of the customer and personal identifying information for the customer, receiving data indicating a transaction between the customer and the merchant, and submitting the transaction to a financial service for authorization.

Claims (55)

1. A method of facilitating transaction processing, the method comprising:

receiving, by a server associated with a payment service system (PSS), a first request to process a first transaction between a customer and a merchant;

receiving, by the server and from a point of sale (POS) application executing on a device of the merchant, payment card information associated with the customer;

processing, by the server, the first transaction using the payment card information;

generating, by the server, a link such that activation of the link causes a customer account to be automatically created for the customer in a data store of the PSS, wherein the payment card information is associated with the customer account in the data store;

receiving, at the server, an indication that the link has been activated;

creating, at the server automatically in response to receiving the indication, the customer account;

receiving, by the server, a second request to process a second transaction involving the customer, the second request including identifying information associated with the customer account corresponding to the customer;

retrieving, by the server from the data store, the payment card information based on identification of the customer account using the identifying information associated with the customer account; and

processing the second transaction involving the customer as a cardless transaction using the payment card information associated with the customer account.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the payment card information associated with the customer occurs in response to a payment card associated with the payment card information having been presented by the customer to the merchant during the first transaction.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the payment card information associated with the customer occurs in response to the device of the merchant reading the payment card information from a payment card associated with the payment card information during the first transaction.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

sending, from the server to a customer device associated with the customer, the link.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

sending, from the server to the device of the merchant, the link, causing the device of the merchant to display the link.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

sending, from the server to the device of the merchant, the link, causing the device of the merchant to print the link.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating, by the server, a receipt for the first transaction, wherein the receipt includes the link; and

sending, from the server to the device of the merchant, the receipt, causing the device of the merchant to create a physical receipt based on the receipt.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the link is a hypertext link.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating a resource encoding the link.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein activation of the link causes the customer account to be created for the customer in the data store of the PSS such that the customer account is prefilled with the payment card information.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the server and from a customer device associated with the customer, a location of the customer device;

verifying, at the server, that the location of the customer device is within a proximity of a location associated with the merchant, wherein processing the second transaction involving the customer as the cardless transaction using the payment card information associated with the customer account occurs in response to verifying that the location of the customer device is within the proximity of the location associated with the merchant.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the location of the customer device is determined based on a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver of the customer device.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, at the server and from a customer device associated with the customer in response to the customer device having activated the link, the identifying information associated with the customer account.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, at the server and from a customer device associated with the customer in response to the customer device having activated the link, a personal identification number (PIN);

retrieving, by the server from the data store, the PIN based on the identification of the customer account using the identifier information associated with the customer account, wherein processing the second transaction involving the customer as the cardless transaction occurs in response to the server verifying the PIN.

15. A method of facilitating transaction processing, the method comprising:

processing, by a server associated with a payment processing service (PSS), a first transaction between a customer and a merchant using payment medium information read by a merchant device, the payment medium information associated with the customer;

generating, by the server, a link such that activation of the link causes a customer account to be automatically created for the customer in a data store of the PSS, wherein the payment medium information is associated with the customer account in the data store;

creating, at the server automatically in response to identifying that the link has been activated, the customer account;

retrieving, by the server from the data store, the payment medium information in response to identifying a second transaction involving the customer and based on identification of the customer account within the data store; and

processing the second transaction involving the customer as a cardless transaction using the payment medium information associated with the customer account.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the payment medium information is read by a card reader of the merchant device from a payment card associated with the customer.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

sending, from the server, the link, causing display of the link.

18. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

generating a resource encoding the link.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein identifying that the link has been activated is based on receipt of information by the server from a customer device associated with the customer in response to the customer device activating the link.

20. A system of facilitating transaction processing, the system comprising:

one or more data stores;

one or more memory units storing instructions; and

one or more processors executing the instructions, wherein execution of the instructions by the one or more processors causes the one or more processors to:

process a first transaction between a customer and a merchant using payment medium information read by a merchant device, the payment medium information associated with the customer,

generate a link such that activation of the link causes a customer account to be automatically created for the customer in the one or more data stores, wherein the payment medium information is associated with the customer account in the one or more data stores,

create the customer account automatically in response to identifying that the link has been activated,

retrieve the payment medium information from the one or more data stores in response to identifying a second transaction involving the customer and based on identification of the customer account within the one or more data stores; and

processing the second transaction involving the customer as a cardless transaction using the payment medium information associated with the customer account.
