Abstract

The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for measuring an analyte in a host. More particularly, the present invention relates to systems and methods for transcutaneous measurement of glucose in a host.

Claims (70)

1. An analyte monitoring apparatus comprising:

a transcutaneous analyte sensor having an in vivo portion and an ex vivo portion;

sensor electronics configured for receiving a signal from the transcutaneous analyte sensor, wherein the sensor electronics are associated with a mounting unit configured to affix the sensor electronics to a skin of a host during a sensor session, wherein the signal is indicative of an analyte concentration in the host; and

at least one electrical contact configured to operably connect the transcutaneous analyte sensor to the sensor electronics;

wherein the sensor electronics comprises:

a processor;

a first wireless transmitter operably connected to the processor;

a second wireless transmitter separate from the first wireless transmitter, wherein the second wireless transmitter comprises a radio frequency chip;

wherein the processor is configured to control the first wireless transmitter to wirelessly transmit one or more data packets containing analyte data at programmed or programmable transmission intervals;

wherein the processor is further configured to control the radio frequency chip to wirelessly transmit archived analyte data in response to an externally applied interrogation of the radio frequency chip.

2. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the programmed or programmable transmission intervals comprise intervals of between 30 seconds and 5 minutes.

3. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more data packets comprises an identifier identifying the sensor electronics.

4. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the archived analyte data comprises the most recent hour of analyte data.

5. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the sensor electronics is configured for initialization in response to a trigger from a receiver.

6. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the sensor electronics is configured to wirelessly transmit calibration information in response to the external interrogation.

7. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the sensor electronics is configured to wirelessly transmit sensor expiration information in response to the external interrogation.

8. A method for processing sensor data, the method comprising:

attaching a sensor electronics to a skin of a host;

receiving, by the sensor electronics, a signal from a transcutaneous analyte sensor, wherein the signal is indicative of an analyte concentration in the host;

wirelessly transmitting analyte data from the sensor electronics to a receiver separate from the sensor electronics at programmed or programmable transmission intervals using a first wireless transmitter embedded within the sensor electronics;

receiving an interrogation from the receiver at a second wireless transmitter different from the first wireless transmitter, wherein the second wireless transmitter comprises a radio frequency chip embedded within the sensor electronics; and

wirelessly transmitting archived analyte data from the sensor electronics to the receiver in response to the interrogation from the receiver.

9. The method for processing sensor data of claim 8 , wherein the programmed or programmable transmission intervals comprise intervals of between 30 seconds and 5 minutes.

10. The method for processing sensor data of claim 8 , comprising wirelessly transmitting calibration information in response to the interrogation.

11. The method for processing sensor data of claim 8 , comprising wirelessly transmitting sensor expiration information in response to the interrogation.

12. The method for processing sensor data of claim 8 , comprising triggering initialization of the sensor electronics with the receiver.

13. An analyte monitoring apparatus comprising:

a transcutaneous analyte sensor having an in vivo portion and an ex vivo portion;

sensor electronics configured for receiving a signal from the transcutaneous analyte sensor, wherein the sensor electronics are associated with a mounting unit configured to affix the sensor electronics to a skin of a host during a sensor session, wherein the signal is indicative of an analyte concentration in the host; and

at least one electrical contact configured to operably connect the transcutaneous analyte sensor to the sensor electronics;

wherein the sensor electronics comprises:

a processor;

a first wireless transmitter operably connected to the processor;

a second wireless transmitter separate from the first wireless transmitter, wherein the second wireless transmitter comprises a radio frequency chip;

wherein the processor is configured to control the first wireless transmitter to wirelessly transmit one or more data packets containing analyte data at programmed or programmable transmission intervals;

wherein the processor is further configured to control the radio frequency chip to wirelessly transmit calibration information in response to an externally applied interrogation of the radio frequency chip.

14. A method for processing sensor data, the method comprising:

attaching a sensor electronics to a skin of a host;

receiving, by the sensor electronics, a signal from a transcutaneous analyte sensor, wherein the signal is indicative of an analyte concentration in the host;

wirelessly transmitting analyte data from the sensor electronics to a receiver separate from the sensor electronics at programmed or programmable transmission intervals using a first wireless transmitter embedded within the sensor electronics;

receiving an interrogation from the receiver at a second wireless transmitter different from the first wireless transmitter, wherein the second wireless transmitter comprises a radio frequency chip embedded within the sensor electronics; and

wirelessly transmitting calibration information from the sensor electronics to the receiver in response to the interrogation from the received.

15. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the programmed or programmable transmission intervals comprise intervals of between 30 seconds and 5 minutes.

16. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the one or more data packets comprises an identifier identifying the sensor electronics.

17. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the sensor electronics is configured for initialization in response to a trigger from a receiver.

18. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the sensor electronics is configured to wirelessly transmit sensor expiration information in response to the external interrogation.

19. The method for processing sensor data of claim 14 , wherein the programmed or programmable transmission intervals comprise intervals of between 30 seconds and 5 minutes.

20. The method for processing sensor data of claim 14 , comprising wirelessly transmitting sensor expiration information in response to the interrogation.

21. The method for processing sensor data of claim 14 , comprising triggering initialization of the sensor electronics with the receiver.

22. An analyte monitoring apparatus comprising:

a transcutaneous analyte sensor having an in vivo portion and an ex vivo portion;

sensor electronics configured for receiving a signal from the transcutaneous analyte sensor, wherein the sensor electronics are associated with a mounting unit configured to affix the sensor electronics to a skin of a host during a sensor session, wherein the signal is indicative of an analyte concentration in the host; and

at least one electrical contact configured to operably connect the transcutaneous analyte sensor to the sensor electronics;

wherein the sensor electronics comprises:

a processor;

a first wireless transmitter operably connected to the processor;

a second wireless transmitter separate from the first wireless transmitter, wherein the second wireless transmitter comprises a radio frequency chip;

wherein the processor is configured to control the first wireless transmitter to wirelessly transmit one or more data packets containing analyte data at programmed or programmable transmission intervals;

wherein the processor is further configured to control the radio frequency chip to wirelessly transmit sensor expiration information in response to an externally applied interrogation of the radio frequency chip.

23. A method for processing sensor data, the method comprising:

attaching a sensor electronics to a skin of a host;

receiving, by the sensor electronics, a signal from a transcutaneous analyte sensor, wherein the signal is indicative of an analyte concentration in the host;

wirelessly transmitting analyte data from the sensor electronics to a receiver separate from the sensor electronics at programmed or programmable transmission intervals using a first wireless transmitter embedded within the sensor electronics;

receiving an interrogation from the receiver at a second wireless transmitter different from the first wireless transmitter, wherein the second wireless transmitter comprises a radio frequency chip embedded within the sensor electronics; and

wirelessly transmitting sensor expiration information from the sensor electronics to the receiver in response to the interrogation from the receiver.

24. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the programmed or programmable transmission intervals comprise intervals of between 30 seconds and 5 minutes.

25. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 22 , wherein at least one of the one or more data packets comprises an identifier identifying the sensor electronics.

26. The analyte monitoring apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the sensor electronics is configured for initialization in response to a trigger from the receiver.

27. The method for processing sensor data of claim 23 , wherein the programmed or programmable transmission intervals comprise intervals of between 30 seconds and 5 minutes.

28. The method for processing sensor data of claim 23 , comprising triggering initialization of the sensor electronics with the receiver.
