Audio systems, devices, MEMS microphones, and methods thereof
View Patent ↗In one embodiment, a MEMS microphone can be coupled to an acoustic horn to provide various benefits and improvements including, but not limited to, at-a-distance acoustic signal reception with improvements in signal-to-noise ratio and directional preference.
1. A hearing aid, comprising:
a MEMS microphone package, wherein the MEMS microphone package comprises a substrate having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, and wherein the substrate also comprises a port hole extending through the substrate from the first surface to the second surface;
a MEMS microphone within the MEMS microphone package;
an acoustic horn having a throat opening, a mouth opening, an inner surface, and an outer surface, wherein the throat opening is attached to the second surface of the substrate and encloses the port hole, and wherein the inner surface of the acoustic horn defines a cross-sectional area that increases along the length of the acoustic horn from the throat opening to the mouth opening, and wherein a ratio of an inner cross-sectional area at the mouth opening to an inner cross-sectional area at the throat opening is between 4:1 and 25:1; and,
wherein the acoustic horn forms an ear hook configured to position a hearing aid relative to an ear of a user of the hearing aid.
2. The hearing aid of claim 1 , wherein a portion of an acoustic channel extending from the throat opening of the acoustic horn to the mouth opening of the acoustic horn, extends substantially perpendicular to the second surface of the substrate.
3. The hearing aid of claim 1 , wherein a portion of an acoustic channel extending from the throat opening of the acoustic horn to the mouth opening of the acoustic horn includes at least one bend.
4. The hearing aid of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic horn is oriented to preferentially receive sound arriving from the front of a user of the hearing aid.
5. The hearing aid of claim 1 , further comprising a second acoustic horn coupled to the acoustic horn and the MEMS microphone, wherein the second acoustic horn is configured to share in common the throat opening of the acoustic horn, and wherein the acoustic horn.
6. The hearing aid of claim 1 , wherein the cross-sectional area that increases along the length of the acoustic horn from the throat opening to the mouth opening, increases in a stepped manner along the length of at least a portion of the acoustic horn.
7. The hearing aid of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic horn comprises a silicone material configured to facilitate acoustic amplification within the acoustic horn.
8. The hearing aid of claim 1 , wherein the interior material comprises rigid material and wherein the exterior material comprises less rigid material.
9. The hearing aid of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic horn is integral with the substrate forming a monolithic structure.
10. A hearing aid, comprising:
a MEMS microphone package, wherein the MEMS microphone package comprises a substrate having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, and wherein the substrate also comprises a port hole extending through the substrate from the first surface to the second surface;
a MEMS microphone within the MEMS microphone package; and,
an acoustic horn having a throat opening, a mouth opening, an inner surface, and an outer surface, wherein the throat opening is attached to the second surface of the substrate and encloses the port hole, and wherein the inner surface of the acoustic horn defines a cross-sectional area that increases along the length of the acoustic horn from the throat opening to the mouth opening, and wherein the acoustic horn comprises an interior material configured to facilitate acoustic amplification and an outer material configured to facilitate acoustic attenuation.
11. The hearing aid of claim 10 , wherein the acoustic horn is configured to substantially amplify sound frequencies within the audible frequencies.
12. The hearing aid of claim 10 , wherein the acoustic horn is configured to substantially amplify sound frequencies above 1000 Hz and within the audible frequencies.
13. The hearing aid of claim 10 , wherein a portion of an acoustic channel extending from the throat opening of the acoustic horn to the mouth opening of the acoustic horn, extends substantially perpendicular to the second surface of the substrate.
14. The hearing aid of claim 10 , wherein a portion of an acoustic channel extending from the throat opening of the acoustic horn to the mouth opening of the acoustic horn includes at least one bend.
15. The hearing aid of claim 10 , wherein the acoustic horn is oriented to preferentially receive sound arriving from the front of a user of a hearing aid.
16. The hearing aid of claim 10 , further comprising a second acoustic horn coupled to the acoustic horn and the MEMS microphone, wherein the second acoustic horn is configured to share in common the throat opening of the acoustic horn, and wherein the acoustic horn and the second acoustic horn are configured to point in different directions.
17. The hearing aid of claim 10 , wherein the acoustic horn is integral with the substrate forming a monolithic structure.
18. The hearing aid of claim 10 , wherein the acoustic horn comprises a silicone material configured to facilitate acoustic amplification within the acoustic horn.
