Abstract

A method for managing applications configured for execution on a mobile device is provided. The method includes receiving one or more network access requests from one or more applications executing on the mobile device, determining that the mobile device is operating in a background mode, suppressing transmission to a network of the one or more network access requests based on the determination, and transmitting a subset of the one or more network access requests upon transition out of the background mode.

Claims (34)

1 - 10 . (canceled)

11 . A mobile device at least in intermittent communication with a network, the mobile device comprising:

a memory;

a processor in communication with the memory, the processor configured to at least run applications, each of which initiates data requests on the mobile device, and optimize data traffic by:

intercepting at least some of the data requests made by the applications running on the mobile device;

detecting recurring requests among the intercepted data requests; and

aligning at least some of the recurring requests to optimize data traffic associated with the recurring requests.

12 . The mobile device of claim 11 , wherein detecting recurring requests comprises detecting, among the intercepted data requests, multiple requests for a same resource.

13 . The mobile device of claim 11 , wherein detecting recurring requests comprises detecting, among the intercepted data requests, multiple requests having a same returned value.

14 . The mobile device of claim 11 , wherein detecting recurring requests comprises detecting, among the intercepted data requests, data requests made at repeated time periods.

15 . The mobile device of claim 14 , wherein detecting recurring requests comprises detecting, among the intercepted data requests, data requests having commonalities.

16 . The mobile device of claim 15 , wherein detecting data requests having commonalities comprises detecting data requests for a content, a service, or a source having a shared characteristic.

17 . The mobile device of claim 11 , wherein aligning at least some of the recurring requests to optimize data traffic associated with the aligned requests comprises minimizing a number of connections needed to be established for receiving data over the network to satisfy the aligned requests.

18 . The mobile device of claim 11 , wherein the network comprises a wireless network or broadband network.

19 . The mobile device of claim 11 , wherein the data requests initiated on the mobile device by the applications are directed by the applications to content sources, wherein the mobile device is remote from the content sources.

20 . The mobile device of claim 11 , wherein aligning at least some of the recurring requests comprises sending the aligned requests to a remote proxy.

21 . The mobile device of claim 11 , wherein aligning at least some of the recurring requests comprises batching the aligned requests as batched requests.

22 . The mobile device of claim 21 , wherein batching the aligned requests as batched requests comprises sending, from the mobile device, a lower number of batched requests than a recurrence number of the recurring requests.

23 . A system comprising:

a client device in at least intermittent communication with a network; and

a remote proxy in at least intermittent communication with the client device via the network,

wherein the client device comprises:

a memory;

a processor in communication with the memory, the processor configured to at least run applications, each of which initiates data requests on the client device, and optimize data traffic by:

intercepting at least some of the data requests made by the applications running on the client device;

detecting at least one commonality in recurring requests among the intercepted data requests; and

aligning at least some of the recurring requests having the detected commonality to optimize data traffic associated with the aligned requests by sending the aligned requests to the remote proxy.

24 . The system of claim 23 , wherein sending the aligned requests to the remote proxy comprises batching the aligned requests.

25 . The system of claim 23 , wherein a local proxy on the client device notifies the remote proxy to monitor responses received from at least one content source for the aligned requests.

26 . The system of claim 23 , wherein the remote proxy monitors responses received from at least one content source for the aligned requests for changed results prior to returning results to the client device.

27 . The system of claim 23 , wherein the network comprises a wireless network or broadband network.

28 . The system of claim 23 , wherein detecting at least one commonality in recurring requests comprises detecting data requests for a content, a service, or a source having a shared characteristic.

29 . The system of claim 23 , wherein sending the aligned requests to the remote proxy comprises minimizing a number of connections needed to be established for receiving data over the network to satisfy the aligned requests.

30 . The system of claim 23 , wherein a local proxy on the client device simulates application server responses for applications running on the client device using locally cached content.
