Abstract

A patient support apparatus includes a sensor capable of detecting vital signs and includes structures for monitoring the vital signs and providing local and/or remote indications to caregivers if the vital signs fall outside of acceptable limits.

Claims (36)

1. A patient support apparatus comprising

a sensor providing signals indicative of vital signs of a patient positioned on the patient support apparatus,

a controller coupled to the sensor and including a processor and a memory device, the memory device including instructions that, when executed, cause the controller to receive the signals, compare the signals to pre-established acceptable limits, calculate a sepsis risk assessment score based on the signals, and, if the sepsis risk assessment score is at or above a predetermined value, output a command signal to initiate a sepsis protocol administration, and

a sepsis-status notification system responding to the command signal from the controller to display a first visual indication that shows that the patient is septic and display second visual indication that shows a status of the sepsis protocol administration,

wherein the status of the sepsis protocol administration includes an action list having a first action associated with the sepsis protocol administration, a second action associated with the sepsis protocol administration, and a third action associated with the sepsis protocol administration, and

wherein the first action includes a first status having a first representation configured to indicate that action is still needed, the second action includes a second status having a second representation configured to indicated that no action is needed, and the third action includes a third status having a third representation configured to indicated that the third action is pending.

2. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first visual indication includes an alert that shows the patient is septic and the second visual indication includes a timer that measures how long the patient has been septic.

3. The patient support apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the timer is a countdown timer that displays an amount of time remaining in the sepsis protocol administration.

4. The patient support apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the controller is configured to communicate with an external nurse call station and the visual indications are transmitted for display at a nurse call station.

5. A hospital bed comprising

a frame,

a sensor providing signals indicative of vital signs of a patient positioned on the frame,

a controller coupled to the sensor and including a processor and a memory device, the memory device including instructions that, when executed, cause the controller to receive the signals, compare the signals to pre-established acceptable limits, calculate a sepsis risk assessment score based on the signals, and, if the sepsis risk assessment score is at or above a predetermined value, output a command signal to initiate a sepsis protocol administration, and

a sepsis-status notification system responding to the command signal from the controller to display a first visual indication that shows that the patient is septic and display second visual indication that shows a status of the sepsis protocol administration,

wherein the sepsis-status notification system includes a projector coupled to the frame and configured to project the first visual indication on a floor around the frame, the first visual indication includes a countdown timer that indicates an amount of time remaining in the sepsis protocol administration.

6. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the first and the second visual indications includes an alert message on an interface coupled to the patient support apparatus.

7. The patient support apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the alert message includes at least one of a textual indication that the patient is septic, an iconic representation that the patient is septic, and a timer.

The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and the second visual indications includes an indicator panel coupled to the patient support apparatus that has a first color when no command signal is provided and has a second color, different from the first color when the command signal is provided.

9. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to communicate with an electronic medical record system to receive information from the electronic medical record system indicative of a medical history of a patient supported on the patient support apparatus.

10. The patient support apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to compare the signals provided by the sensor to a list of predetermined conditions stored in the electronic medical record system to determine if the patient is septic.

11. The patient support apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the controller is configured to provide the command signal if at least one of the vital signs deviates from acceptable limits and at least one of the predetermined conditions is present in the patient's electronic medical record.

The patient support apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to compare the predetermined conditions to pre-established acceptable limits and provide the command signal when at least one vital sign deviates from an acceptable limit and at least one predetermined condition deviates from the acceptable limit.

13. The patient support apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined condition includes at least one of low blood pressure and a change in mental status.

14. A hospital bed comprising

a frame,

a first sensor providing a first signal indicative of a first vital sign of a patient supported on the patient support apparatus and a second sensor providing a second signal indicative of a second vital sign of the patient different than the first vital sign indicated by the first sensor,

a controller coupled to the sensors and including a processor and a memory device, the memory device including instructions that, when executed, cause the controller to receive the first and second sensor signals, analyze an electronic medical record storing patient information for the patient, compare the signals and the patient information to pre-established acceptable limits, calculate a sepsis risk assessment score based on the signals and the patient information, and, if the sepsis risk assessment score is at or above a predetermined value, output a command signal to initiate a sepsis protocol administration, and

a notification system responding to the command signal from the controller, the notification system including an interface coupled to the frame and configured to provide at least ene a first visual indication that shows that the patient is septic, and indicator panel coupled to the frame and configured to provide a second visual indication that shows that the patient is septic, and a projector coupled to the frame and configured to project a third visual indication onto a surface spaced apart from the frame that shows that the patient is septic,

wherein the first visual indication includes an alert that shows the patient is septic and a timer that indicates how long the patient has been septic, the second visual indication includes a color that indicates that the patient is septic and a second timer that indicates how long the patient has been septic, and the third visual indication includes the color and a third timer that indicates how long the patient has been septic.

15. The hospital bed of claim 14 , wherein the first visual indication further includes a status of the sepsis protocol administration in real time.

16. The hospital bed of claim 14 , wherein the timer is a countdown timer that shows an amount of time remaining in the sepsis protocol administration.

17. The hospital bed of claim 16 , wherein the first visual indication further includes a display of the procedures performed on the patient since sepsis was determined to be present.

18. The hospital bed of claim 14 , wherein the color is displayed on each side of the second timer and the third timer.

19. The hospital bed of claim 5 , wherein the status of the sepsis protocol administration includes an action list having a first action associated with the sepsis protocol administration, a second action associated with the sepsis protocol administration, and a third action associated with the sepsis protocol administration, and

wherein the first action includes a first status having a first representation configured to indicate that action is still needed, the second action includes a second status having a second representation configured to indicated that no action is needed, and the third action includes a third status having a third representation configured to indicated that the third action is pending.

20. The hospital bed of claim 5 , wherein the controller is configured to diagnose the patient as being septic and the first visual indication further includes a color that is displayed on each side of the timer to indicate that the patient is septic.
