Abstract

Drone systems and methods for package pickup and delivery include, in an air traffic control system configured to manage Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flight in a geographic region, communicating to one or more UAVs over one or more wireless networks; directing a UAV to deliver the package to a delivery location, wherein the air traffic control system provides a flight plan to the UAV based on the delivery request; and directing the UAV, in transit to deliver the package, to cancel delivery of the package and perform one of (1) return the package to a location where the UAV originally picked up the package and (2) deliver the package to an updated delivery location.

Claims (38)

1 . A drone method for package pickup and delivery, comprising:

in an air traffic control system configured to manage Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flight in a geographic region, communicating to one or more UAVs over one or more wireless networks;

directing a UAV to deliver the package to a delivery location, wherein the air traffic control system provides a flight plan to the UAV based on the delivery request; and

directing the UAV, in transit to deliver the package, to cancel delivery of the package and perform one of (1) return the package to a location where the UAV originally picked up the package and (2) deliver the package to an updated delivery location.

2 . The drone method of claim 1 , wherein canceling the delivery of the package includes providing the UAV an updated flight plan over the one or more wireless networks.

3 . The drone method of claim 1 , wherein directing the UAV to cancel the delivery of the package is based on the delivery of the package being delayed.

4 . The drone method of claim 3 , further comprising the air traffic control system determining that the delivery of the package cannot be completed in a current flight of the UAV based on the package being delayed.

5 . The drone method of claim 1 , wherein directing the UAV to cancel the delivery of the package is based on the delivery location being changed while the UAV is in transit to deliver the package.

6 . The drone method of claim 5 , further comprising determining that the delivery of the package cannot be completed during a current flight of the UAV based on the delivery location being changed, and directing the UAV to return the package to the location where the UAV originally picked up the package.

7 . The drone method of claim 5 , further comprising determining that the delivery of the package is completable during a current flight of the UAV based on the delivery location being changed and directing the UAV to deliver the package to the updated delivery location.

8 . A drone air traffic control system comprising:

a processor and a network interface communicatively coupled to one another; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to:

communicate to one or more Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) over one or more wireless networks, wherein the one or more UAVs are configured to constrain flight based on coverage of the one or more wireless networks;

direct a UAV to deliver the package to a delivery location, wherein the air traffic control system provides a flight plan to the UAV based on the delivery request; and

direct the UAV, in transit to deliver the package, cancel delivery of the package and perform one of (1) return the package to a location where the UAV originally picked up the package and (2) deliver the package to an updated delivery location.

9 . The drone air traffic control system of claim 8 , wherein canceling the delivery of the package includes providing the UAV an updated flight plan over the one or more wireless networks.

10 . The drone air traffic control system of claim 8 , wherein directing the UAV to cancel the delivery of the package is based on the delivery of the package being delayed.

11 . The drone air traffic control system of claim 10 , wherein the memory storing instructions that, when executed, further cause the processor to:

determine that the delivery of the package cannot be completed in a current flight of the UAV based on the package being delayed.

12 . The drone air traffic control system of claim 8 , wherein directing the UAV to cancel the delivery of the package is based on the delivery location being changed while the UAV is in transit to deliver the package.

13 . The drone air traffic control system of claim 12 , wherein the memory storing instructions that, when executed, further cause the processor to:

determine that the delivery of the package cannot be completed during a current flight of the UAV based on the delivery location being changed; and

direct the UAV to return the package to the location where the UAV originally picked up the package.

14 . The drone air traffic control system of claim 12 , wherein the memory storing instructions that, when executed, further cause the processor to:

determine that the delivery of the package is completable during a current flight of the UAV based on the delivery location being changed; and

direct the UAV to deliver the package to the updated delivery location.

15 . An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for delivering a package, the UAV comprising:

hardware and antennas adapted to communicate with one or more wireless networks;

a processor communicatively coupled to the hardware and antennas; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to:

communicate with an air traffic control system via one or more wireless networks;

obtain and send data to the air traffic control system in association with a flight of the UAV during delivery of the package;

pick up the package at a pickup location for delivery of the package to a delivery location based on instructions received from the air traffic control system; and

perform one of (1) return the package to a location where the UAV originally picked up the package and (2) deliver the package to an updated delivery location based on instructions received from the air traffic control system while in transit to deliver the package.

16 . The UAV of claim 15 , wherein the memory storing instructions that, when executed, further cause the processor to:

receive an updated flight plan from the air traffic control system; and

perform the one of (1) return the package to the location where the UAV originally picked up the package and (2) deliver the package to the updated delivery location based on the updated flight plan.
